This study was conducted to investigate the effect of trails on breeding bird community by territory mapping method from April to August 1999 in Chirisan National Park. Twenty-five bird species were observed and 18 bird species bred in 4 study sites. Thirteen species bred in Imgullyung site 14 species in Imgullyung trail site 14 species in the Nogodan site and 15 species in the Nogodan trail site. There were bred 62.0 pairs of birds in the Imgullyung site 55.0 pairs in the Imgullyung trail site 36.5 pairs in the Nogodan site and 36.5 pairs in the Nogodan trail site in the breeding season 1999. There were no differences in breeding bird communities among 4 sites. The nesting and foraging guild structures were similar among 4 sites. It seems that trails do not influences on the breeding bird community becasuse the canopy layer was similair and connected and understory vegetation was developed around the trails. It would be needed the maintenance and management of canopy layer and understory vegetation for the protection and management of bird communities around the trails.

This study was aimed to predicting the exercise load in mountain climbing related physical condition of trail, and to propose a capability of user management. It appeared that exercise load in mountain climbing was mainly influenced by the slope of trail and weight of load. It thought that the trails of steep area could be controled the use of person who have a low athletic power as a propose the exercise load index by age.

This study compared the results of Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) on trail managerial conditions by trail section in Mudeung-Mountain Provincial Park. The study also examined the validity of using overall survey method (OSM: analyzing IPA from the data collected from all the trails without separating trails by section) by comparing the OSM results with those obtained from the survey by section. A total of 258 users who visited the Park was surveyed using questionnaire in the four designated trail sections during the September of 2000. The result of IPA showed that there are differences in twenty three attributes out of the 26 selected attributes (88.5%) among four trail sections. The overall IPA results obtained from the total of four trail sections were not the same with the IPA results from each trail section in twenty three attributes (88.5%) out of the 26 selected attributes. It suggests that we need to use a survey segmented by trail sections rather than a survey for overall trails to obtain better information for more efficient trail management.

They are raising the necessity to prepare the conservational management strategy for the trail on the ridge of the Baekdudaegan where deterioration of natural environment along the trail as the rapid increase of visitors to the Baekdudaegan. The purpose of this study, followed after the Kwon and Lee(2003), is to research the deterioration condition of the trail between Namdeogyusan and Sosagogae on the Baekdudaegan. To accomplish the purpose, not only trail condition such as altitude, entire width, bare width, maximum depth and slope of trail, but also deterioration types of trail were surveyed at the total 182 points for 32.3km in length. Furthermore, impact rating class, which could be effective means to check the step and extent of deterioration process, was judged on each points of trail. Results informs us that the deterioration condition of the trail between Namdeogyusan and Sosagogae is not reached the level of grave concern yet, but some points and sections of trail are in urgent need of the integrated and organized maintenance. And some managerial strategies of trail were proposed in connection with the maintenance for trail on the Baekdudaegan ridge.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the trail deterioration conditions and to obtain the informations for the desirable maintenance and restoration of the trails in Woraksan National Park. To accomplish the purpose, not only trail condition such as altitude, entire width, bare width, maximum depth and slope of trail, but also deterioration types of trail were surveyed at the total 111 points for 13.5km in length on the four access trails to Yeongbong which is the main peak of Woraksan. Furthermore, impact rating class, which could be effective means to check the step and extent of deterioration process, was judged on each points of trail. Results informs us that the deterioration condition of the trail in Woraksan National Park is not reached the lev- el of grave concern yet, but the active counterplan to change over from the safety-centric facility station to the integrated and organized restoration aiming to natural environment conservation is urgently needed.

This study has been conducted to understand the deterioration state and to establish a management plan for the trails of Jeongmaek ridge. To find the extent of the deterioration, researchers investigated twelve physical factors and they examined the states of the trails qualitatively. The results are as follows. The extent of the damages to the trails of the Hannam Geumbuk-Jeongmaek ridge was 78cm in breadth, 6.4cmin depth, 20.8% in slope, the extent of the damages to the trails of the Guembuk-Jeongmaek ridge was 73cm in breadth, 7.3cm in depth, 20.0% in slope. And the extent of the damages to the trails of the Naknam-Jeongmaek ridge was 73cm in breadth, 6.7cm in depth, 17.7% in slope, the extent of the damages to the trails of the Guemnam-Jeongmaek ridge was 79cm in breadth, 6.7cm in depth, 19.7% in slope, which could be interpreted as relatively good. However, it was confirmed that damages to the trails that run through the urban areas and tourist attractions had become worse than in the past. Therefore, in the regions where the number of comers is expected to increase, more detailed monitoring and proactive management is required.

Mountain trails play an important role in the daily life and health of the citizens, and also are major areas for recreation operators strive to balance the needs of pedestrian with the needs of wildlife and health improvement. In this view point, this research aims at analyzing the slope of mountain trails using mobile GPS and suggesting the suitable path to citizens for improving health. The result shows that the trail slope analysis by using mobile GPS could be effectively evaluated the degree of walk difficulty.

This study was conducted to provide information which will be useful for establishing and implementing effective management policy for Baekdudaegan Trail and user satisfaction by investigating the characteristics of trail use and users' perceptions of the environmental impacts on the trail. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was employed in Baekdudaegan trail by three topological types. With this classification, the characteristics of the way the trails used and users' perceptions of the impacts were analysed in terms of ecological, physical and social environments. The result showed that the Baekdudaegan trail was used mainly for mountaineering rather vacation or travel, and found no differences in the characteristics of the trail use by the types. Ecological environment showed no significant relation with user satisfaction, however changes in physical environmental factors such as a trail width functioned as a negative component to decrease use experience. In addition, the satisfaction of the users had little to do with social environment, when the level of using the trail was relatively low. To present, the levels of impacts on ecological, physical and social environments and the users' satisfaction level regarding the Baekdudaegan trail appear to be positive. However, the increase of use level is expected in the future, and therefore systematic managerial measures need to be implemented to monitor the changes of the trails and interactions of the environmental impacts.

Trail might be the primary recreational space to appear the use impact by visitors on ecological space in National park. On the basis of this concept, the carrying capacity was estimated on the trail. Impact rating class and pattern of passersby were surveyed on the 22 valid trails in Bukhansan National Park. Using two variables, the width of trail and amount of passersby, the correlation coefficient was analysed and the regression model was derived by raising x to a higher power. And carrying capacity estimation equation was devised by considering the pay fee visitors and average passersby in a trail section. With carrying capacity estimation equation to apply Bukansan National Park, it is desired that maximum carrying capacity is about 3 million persons a year under conditions of trail width 2.2m when National Park Authority wants to keep the existing management level. If they strengthen the management goal far resource conservation like that they want to keep the trail width 2.0m, the number of visitors might be decreased to about 2 million persons a year.

According to rapid increase of visitors to the Baekdudaegan, the most important ecosystem in Korea, fur climbing or outdoor recreation, deterioration of natural environment along the trail on the ridge of Baekdudaegan is becoming more serious. The purpose of this study is to research the deterioration condition of the trail between Manbokdae and Bokseongijae on the Baekdudaegan with intent to prepare the conservational management strategy fur the trail on the ridge of Baekdudaegan. To accomplish the purpose, not only trail condition such as altitude, entire width, bare width, maximum depth and slope of trail, but also deterioration types of trail were surveyed at the total 232 points for 28.4km in length. Furthermore, impact rating class, which could be effective means to check the step and extent of deterioration process, was judged on each points of trail. Putting together these results informs us that the deterioration condition of the trail between Manbokdae and Bokseongijae is not reached the level of grave concern yet, but prompt countermeasure to maintain the existing condition has to be considered with regard for the conditions of location and the increasing amounts of use.
