  • Blast-induced anisotropic rock damage around a blast-hole was analyzed by a using numerical method with user-defined subroutine based on continuum damage mechanics. Anisotropic blasting pressure was evaluated by applying anisotropic ruck characteristics to analytical solution which is a function of explosive and rock properties. Anisotropic rock damage was evaluated by applying the proposed anisotropic blasting pressure. Blast-induced isotropic rock damage was also analyzed. User-defined subroutines to solve anisotropic and isotropic damage model were coded. Initial rock damages in natural ruck were considered in anisotropic and isotropic damage models. Blasting pressure and elastic modulus of rock were major influential parameters from parametric analysis results of isotropic rock damage. From the results of anisotropic rock damage analysis, blasting pressure was the most influential parameter. Anisotropic rock damage area in horizontal direction was approximately 34% larger and about 12% smaller in vertical direction comparing with isotropic rock damage area. Isotropic rock damage area under fully coupled charge condition was around 30 times larger than that under decoupled charge condition. Blasting pressure under fully coupled charge condition was estimated to be more than 10 times larger than that of decoupled charge condition.

  • In this paper a new constitutive model for ductile materials was proposed. This model can describe the material degradation due to the evolution of isotropic damage during elasto-platic deformation. The plastic flow rule was derived under the framework of thermodynamic approach of continuum damage mechanics(CDM) in which plastic strain hardening parameters and isotropic damage were taken as thermodynamic state variables. And the process to determine material constants for constitutive model using an experimental data was presented.

  • this paper was concentrated on the finite element formulation to solve boundary value problems by using the isotropic elasto-plastic damage constitutive model proposed previously(Noh, 2000) The plastic damage of ductile materials is generally accompanied by large plasticdeformation and strain. So nonlinearity problems induced by large deformation large rotation and large strain behaviors were dealt with using the nonlinear kinematics of elasto-plastic deformations based on the continuum mechanics. The elasto-plastic damage constitutive model was applied to the nonlinear finite element formulation process of Shin et al(1997) and an improved analysis model considering the all nonlinearities of structural behaviors is proposed. Finally to investigate the applicability and validity of the numerical model some numerial examples were considered.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate fatigue damage of quasi-isotropic laminates under tensile loading in different directions. Low cycle fatigue tests of [0/-60/+60]a laminates and [+30/-30/90]s lamina tes were carried out. Material systems used are AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The fatigue damage of [+30/-30/90]s is very different from that of [0/-60/+60]s. The position of delamination generated at AS4/Epoxy and AS$/PEEK laminates were differentiated by the matrix difference that is, we suppose, the value of both GIcr(critical energy release rate of mode-I) and GIIIcr(critical energy release rate of mode-III) difference.

  • In this study, when the applied directions of tensile loading is changed fatigue damage of quasi-isotropic composite laminates was discussed. Low cycle fatigue tests of $[0/-60/+60]_s$ laminates and $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates were carried out. Material systems used were AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The fatigue damage of $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates differed from that of $[0/-60/+60]_s$ laminates. The position of delamination generated at AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates appeared differently according to the kind of matrix. Critical values of strain energy release rate were obtained by using the strain measured at the initiation of delamination. The experimental results agreed well with the results obtained by the proposed method for determining strain energy release rate.

  • We have implemented a system of falling weight impact tester in order to evaluate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates. The absorbed energy of T-300 orthotropic composites is higher than that of quasi-isotropic specimen over impact energy 7J, but in case of using T700 fiber, much difference does not show. Also, absorbed energy of T-300 orthotropic composites, which are composed of the same stacking number and orientation became more than that of T700 fiber specimen however there was no big difference in case of quasi-isotropic specimens. Delamination area of impacted specimens was measured with ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Delamination area and frequency responses were evaluated between impacted and unimpacted specimens. There is a strong correlation between frequency responses and impact-induced delamination. The presence and scale of damages have been investigated based on the variations of frequency responses.

  • In this paper, a system of falling weight impact tester was built up to evaluate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates in consideration of stress wave propagation theory. Delamination area of impacted specimens for the different ply orientation was measured with ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen having four interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the more absorbed energy. Hybrid specimen containing GFRP layer was higher than that of normal specimens.

  • This paper describes a method for a falling weight impact test to estimate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates based on considerations of stress wave propagation theory. The absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites is higher than that of quasi-isotropic specimen over impact energy 6.8J, but in case of using T700 fiber, much difference does not show. Also, absorbed energy of T300 orthotropic composites, which are composed of the same stacking number and orientation became more than that of T700 fiber specimen; however there was no big difference in case of quasi-isotropic specimens. The delamination areas of the impacted specimen were measured with the ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. The fracture surfaces were observed by using the SEM (scanning electron microscope) through a low-velocity impact test in order to confirm the fracture mechanism.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the static strength, the stress distribution, and the failure process of quasi-isotropic composite laminates made of two different matrices when loading directions are changed. We carried out static tests of $[0/-60/+60]_s$ and $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates. Two types of matrices used are AS4/epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The damage mechanisms of the quasi-isotropic laminate, $[0/-60/+60]_s$, strongly depend on the load direction applied to the laminate.

  • Compared to metal, CFRP has excellent mechanical characteristics in terms of intensity, hardness, and heat resistance as well as its light weight that it is used widely in various fields. Therefore, this material has been used recently in the aerospace field. On the other hand, the material has shortcomings in terms of its extreme vulnerability to damage occurring internally from an external impact. This study examined the intensity up to its destruction from repeated use with the internal impact of a CFRP laminated plate that had also been exposed to external impact obtain design data for the external plate of aircraft used in the aerospace field. For the experimental method, regarding the quasi-isotopic type CFRP specimen and orthotropic CFRP specimen that are produced with a different layer structure, steel spheres with a diameter of 5 mm were collided to observe the resulting impact damage. Through a 3-point flexural fatigue experiment, the progress of internal layer separation and impact damage was observed. Measurements of the flexural fatigue strength after the flexural fatigue experiment until internal damage occurs and the surface impacted by the steel spheres revealed the quasi-isotopic layer structure to have a higher intensity for both cases.
