  • Transverse steel bars are used in the plastic hinge zone of columns to insure adequate confinement, prevention of longitudinal bar buckling and ductile behavior. Fabrication and placement of rectangular hoops and cross-ties in columns are difficult to construct. Details of reinforcement for rectangular section require a lot of rectangular hoops and cross-ties. In this paper, to solve these problems, the new lateral confinement method using oblong hoop is proposed for the transverse confinement of the flared column. It can be the alternative for oblong cross-section and flared column with improved workability and cost-efficiency. The final objectives of this study are to suggest appropriate oblong hoop details and to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for seismic performance or damage assessment based on the drift levels such as residual deformation, elastic strain energy. This paper describes factors of seismic performance such as ultimate displacement/drift ratio, displacement ductility, response modification factor, equivalent viscous damping ratio and effective stiffness.

  • This paper summarizes the seismic performance of two shear walls with different reinforcement details in boundary elements. One is a special shear wall designed by KBC2009 and the other is a shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements, which is a newly proposed type of special shear wall. Experimental tests under cyclic reversed loading were carried out with two 2/3 scale shear walls which were modelled from the lower part of seismic-resisting shear wall in 22-stories wall-slab apartment building. The experimental results show that seismic performance of shear wall with improved reinforcement details was almost similar to that of special shear wall with respect to the moment-drift ratio. However, energy dissipation capacity and ductility were slightly different. Also, shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements satisfied the inter-story drift limit of 1.5% from KBC2009.

  • The seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame retrofitted with H-beam frame and cast expansive mortar into joint between existing RC frame and H-beam frame is investigated experimentally and analytically. RC frames considered in the study contain non-ductile reinforcement details of low-rise school building constructed in Korea before 1988. The tests were conducted on half-scale specimens simulating the lower frame assemblages of a typical school building. Two one-bay, one-story RC frames with and without retrofitting with H-beam frame and expansive joint mortar were tested to failure. Test and analysis results indicated that seismic strengthening using H-beam and expansive joint mortar significantly improved the lateral strength and stiffness of non-ductile RC frame without installing anchor bolts to fit H-beam frame into existing RC frame. The effectiveness of seismic strengthening technology proposed in the study for non-ductile RC frame was verified experimentally and analytically.

  • Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns with aspect ratio 4.5 were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable is transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratios of spirals of all the columns are 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The longitudinal steel ratio is 2.017%. The axial load ratio is 7%. This paper describes mainly crack behavior, load-displacement hysteresis loop, seismic performance such as equivalent damping ratio, residual displacement and effective stiffness and flexural over-strength of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variable. The regulation of flexural over-strength is adopted by Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design, 2012). The test results are compared with nominal strength, result of nonlinear moment-curvature analysis and the design specifications such as AASHTO LRFD and Korea Bridge Design Specifications(Limited state design).
