  • As the welding spot forms a singular geometry of an external crack type, fatigue failure of spot-welded specimens can be evaluated by means of a fracture parameter. Recasting the load vs. fatigue life relationships experimentally obtained, we predicted the fatigue life of spot-weld specimens with a single parameter denoted the equivalent stress intensity factor. This crack driving parameter is demonstrated to successfully describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type in a comprehensive manner. The suggested fatigue life formula for a single spot weld can play a key role in the design and assessment of spot-welded panel structures, in that the fatigue strength of multi-spots is eventually determined by the fatigue strength of each single spot. We therefore attempt to evaluate the effectiveness and validity of $K_e$ in predicting the fatigue life of auto seat belt anchor panel. We first establish finite element models reflecting the actual mechanical behavior of 3 types of seat belt anchor specimens. Using finite element models elaborately established, we then obtain the effective crack driving parameter $K_e$ composed of its ductility -dependent modal components. It is confirmed that the $K_e$ concept successfully predicts the fatigue life of multi-spot welded panel structures represented by auto seat belt anchors here.

  • The damage and fracture of machine or structure are caused by the crack happened from the defect existed at the inside of material. The properties of crack propagation and growth characteristic must be considered because there are many cases at which these cracks are densely existed. Therefore, this study investigates the fracture property due to the position of crack and hole inside the standard compact tension (C. T.) specimen. When the concentrated load is applied eccentrically at the standard C. T. specimen, the fracture mechanical behavior due to the existence or non-existence and the position of hole near crack is investigated. As the result of analysis study, model 3 (in case of the distance of 2mm on the horizontal direction between the end part and hole as the specimen model existed with one hole near the crack) has the maximum deformation, stress and deformation energy of the most values among three models. As the distance between the crack and hole inside the specimen becomes nearer, the maximum stress becomes higher in cases of three models. Apart from the number of holes, it is seen that the maximum stress becomes higher near the crack when the hole exists near the crack inside the specimen. If the hole inside the machine or the mechanical structure is punctured by using the result of this study, it is thought that the occurred breakage or breakdown can be prevented by reducing the fracture stress happened at the specimen.

  • Steel structures used in marine environments, such as ships, offshore structures or sub-structures in wind power generation facilities are prone to corrosion. In this study, the corrosion fatigue crack propagation characteristics due to the environmental load are examined by experiment at -1050 mV vs. SCE, which is equivalent to the anti-corrosion potential of zinc anodes that are widely used as sacrificial anodes. In this study, for this purpose, an experimental study is conducted on the effect of cathodic protection on the propagation of fatigue cracks in the seawater environment under the condition of -1050 mV vs. SCE, considering the wave period in synthetic seawater. Cathodic protection prevents corrosion; however, excessive protection generates hydrogen through chemical reactions as well as calcareous deposits. The fatigue crack propagation rate appeared to be faster than the rate in a seawater corrosion environment at the early stages of the experiment. As the crack length and stress intensity factor K increased, the crack propagation rate became slower than the fatigue crack propagation rate in seawater. However, the crack growth rate was faster than that in the atmosphere.
