  • This study presents a method to test quite small-sized and light-weighted micro-drill bits which are used to make holes in printed circuit boards(PCB). After getting images of micro-drill bits through the high resolution microscope, we developed image processing algorithms to detect fiducial points, and then measured diverse factors of the drill-bit based on these points. We also developed the window-based inspection system to automatically discriminate normal and abnormal status. For the relative comparison of its performance, the system was compared with an existing inspection system using test images. Experimental results showed that the proposed system slightly improved performance, and also classified correctly some misjudged errors which were occurred in the existing system.

  • In this study, reliability tests of torsion control expansion anchors according to drill bit diameters were performed. The standard deviation and coefficient of variation of the anchor were reviewed through the tests for each variable, and the results were compared and evaluated with the standard test results. As a result of the reliability test of the M12 and M16 anchors with 1.04 times the drill bit diameter, they were within 20% of the ultimate tensile load permissible standard coefficient of variation. It was found that the pulling-out performance of the anchor installed in the large hole was sufficiently secured. However, it was found to be about 253% and 210% of the design strength, indicating that the pulling performance of the anchor installed in 1.04 times the drill bit diameter was sufficiently secured. As a result of the reliability test of the M12 and M16 anchors with 1.02 times the drill bit diameter, the value of the coefficient of variation of the ultimate tensile load limit was within 20%, which satisfies the test standard. It was shown to be about 136% and 168% of the design strength, indicating that the pulling-out performance of the anchor installed in 1.02 times the drill bit diameter is sufficiently secured.

  • An analytical model for drillstring axial vibration is proposed. The drillstring is modelled as an equivalent stepwise uniform bar, and the bottom boundary is modelled asa spring and a damper which depend on WOB(weight on bit). The effect of tool joints and the effect of surrounding layers, such as mud and formation, are evaluated theoretically. To investigate the bottom boundary condition, a forced axial vibration testing technique was developed and the tests with a typical drillstring were performed at various WOB's. The results show good agreement with theoretical results. An important conclusion is that the flexibility of the bottom rock must be included in order to predict resonant frequencies of the drillstring axial vibration.

  • The drill bit, which directly transmits percussive forces and torque to the rock, is the core part of a rock drilling machine. For effective drilling, the button arrangement of a drill bit should be optimized because it is the most important design factor in determining drilling efficiency. Furthermore, a quantitative method is necessary to evaluate the button arrangement for the optimization of the drill bit button. Therefore, we propose a new method for the evaluation of the drill bit button arrangement using new evaluation indices, which include the overlapped impact area, blank area, and moment. Moreover, we verify the suitability of the proposed evaluation method by applying it to the conventional button arrangement.

  • The percussion rate and spacing of the button of drill bit are very important in maximizing the drilling efficiency. Therefore, a series of percussion tests using Hopkinson bar system was carried out to assess the fragmentation performance against the beat rate and spacing of a drill bit. First, single percussion test complemented with numerical simulation was performed to analyze rock fragmentation phenomenon and to describe the fragmentation process. Next, multiple percussion test that repetitively strike the rock sample moving at predetermined rate was carried out to predict drilling efficiency against the button spacing. After the tests, the fragmented volume of the rock was measured by laser scanner and the drilling performance was analyzed using the calculated percussive energy and measured negative volume. Based on the results, the single impact performance of drill bit with 102 mm diameter was predicted.

  • The micro drill bit automatic regrinding in-line system is a system that refurbishes drill bits used in a PCB manufacturing process. This system is able to refurbish drill bits with a minimum size of ø0.15-0.075mm that have previously been discarded. Beyond the conventional manual cleaning process using ultrasound, this system adopts a water jet cleaning system, making it capable of cleaning drill bits with a minimum size of ø0.15-0.075mm. This paper analyses various contact pressures applied to the surface of drill bits depending on the shooting pressure of the cleaning device and fluid velocity in order to optimize the nozzle location and to detect structural instability caused by the contact pressures.

  • In this study, a series of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations carried out to evaluate the optimum design model of the internal flow path of drill bit. The Star-CCM+ code was adopted to simulate the multi-phase discharge flow of rock particles and flushing air during a drilling process. The input parameters for the flow simulation of rock particles and air were obtained from the in-situ drilling test results. After the three design factors were determined, the experimental design method (Taguchi method) was utilized to evaluate the optimum value of each factor.

  • In this study, to diagnose the grinding state of a micro drill bit, a sensor attachment location was selected through random vibration analysis of the grinding unit of the micro drill-bit grinding system. In addition, the vibration data generated during the drill bit grinding were collected from the grinding unit for the grinding wheels under the steady and worn conditions, and data feature extraction and dimension reduction were performed. The wear of the micro-drill-bit grinding wheel was diagnosed by applying KNN, a machine-learning algorithm. The classification model showed excellent performance, with an accuracy of 99.2%. The precision, recall and f1-score were higher than 99% in both the steady and wear conditions.
