  • Three specimens of a small sculpin, Icelinus japonicus, were collected from the midwestern coastal waters of the Korean Peninsula firstly. The species is characterized by having two ctenoid scale rows extending posterior end of the second dorsal fin along the dorso-lateral surface of the body, pelvic fin with a spine and two soft rays, and teeth on vomer and palatines. A new Korean name, "Du-jul-bil-neul-hoes-dae", is proposed for the species.

  • Based on the 14 specimens collected from the Korean waters, we described the external morphology of Ocynectes maschalis in detail to provide morphological characteristics for species identification. The species from Korea is characterized by having a low first dorsal fin with a dark spot posteriorly, no dark blotches ventrally, three saddle-like blotches on dorsal midline posterior to the second dorsal fin, and two occipital cirri on head.

  • Four specimens (114.2~134.2 mm SL) of Icelus stenosomus Andriashev, family Cottidae, were collected from Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, East Sea of Korea. They were identified based on the following characters : a pair of strong spines on occipital region, distinct row of scales on both dorsal and ventral sides of body, vermiculate white lines on dorsal side of body, and small prickled scales scattered sparsely on the head. We propose a new Korean name for the species as a new Korean name : 'Mu-nui-jul-ga-si-hoet-dae'.

  • Thirty six species belonging to 21 genera in the family Cottidae from Korea are reviewed and provisional keys to species and genera are provided. Synonyms based on Korean references are included for all cottid fishes of korea, and their taxonomic positions and distribution are discussed. Specimens of twenty one species of this family were collected by trawlers from 38 localities during 1989 to 1992. Five cottid species are recorded for the first time in Korea : They are Triglops jordani(Schmidt), Myoxocephalus stelleri Tilesius, Taurocottus bergi Solatov et Pavlenko, Icelus ochotensis Schmidt and Pseudoblennius zonostigma Jordan et Starks. It is noticeable that most cottid fishes of Korea except 3 species are distributed along the northeastern coast at the southern extremity of cold current from the Okhotsk Sea.

  • Two sculpin specimens (79.3~100.8 mm standard length) were collected from the upper reach of Deokdongcheon Stream, a tributary of the Hyeongsangang River, in Korea. They were identified as Cottus pollux by characteristics such as the absence of palatine teeth, 12~13 unbranched pectoral fin rays, pelvic fins without obvious bands or spots, and the absence of a blackish band on the head or anterior part of the body. A phylogenetic analysis based on the nuclear ITS1 gene and mitochondrial cytb gene indicated that the specimens formed a clade with Japanese C. pollux, supporting the morphological species identification. We propose a new Korean name for the species: "Min-mu-nui-dug-jung-gae"

  • The chromosome numbers of five species in two families of Korea are investigated: Odontobutis platycephala, O. interrupta, and O. obscura in Odontobutidae, and Cottus koreanus and C. hangiongensis in Cottidae. In Odontobutis species, the three species showed the diploid chromosome number, 2n=44 (NF=44) telocentric chromosomes. In Cottus species, the mitotic chromosomes from 24 groups with two chromosomes each indicated that it is a diploid. The karyotype of C. koreanus and C. hangiongensis is 2n=48 and NF=52. These species is the first report on the chromosomes and the karyotype analysis except O. platycephala. Our findings provide cytotaxonomic evidence for the species distinctness of these five species whose descriptions were based primarily on external morphology.

  • Sixteen specimens of Artediellus fuscimentus, belonging to the family Cottidae, were collected from the coastal waters off Samcheok and Donghae, Korea, in December 2010 and February 2015, respectively. The specimens are characterized by four preopercular spines, 12~13 second dorsal fin rays, 10~12 anal fin rays, a first preopercular spine with no minute spine on the inner side, and pectoral fin extending past the origin of the anal fin. We also analyzed 600 base pairs of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b sequence to confirm the taxonomic status of the specimens. The sequences of our specimens corresponded completely to those of Japanese A. fuscimentus, but differed from those of A. atlanticus (d=0.057~0.061). We propose the new Korean names "Eom-ji-hoet-dae-sok" for the genus Artediellus and "Eom-ji-hoet-dae" for the species A. fuscimentus.

  • Fish fauna of the coastal waters off Taean, Chungchyungnam-do, Korea, was investigated from May 1996 to July 1999. The specimems collected from the three localities were identified into 73 species belonging to 63 genera and 40 families. Of them the largest group was order Perciformes, comprising 35 species and 16 families, and showed 47.9% in total number of species. Chasmichthys gulosus and C. dolichognathus were commonly found from the st. 1, Sebastes schlegeli and Hexagrammos otakii, from the st. 2 and Cynoglossus joyneri, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Pagrus majar, Chirolophis wui and Pholis fangi from the st. 3 of sampling localities. Porocottus sp. is described on the basis of 2 specimens collected from the st. 1 of sampling localities. The species was distinguished from all the other members of the genus by the following combination of characters: united dorsal fin, scales on trunk above lateral line, cirri on anterior part of lateral line.

  • The genus Cottiusculus Jordan and Starks 1904 (Cottoidei: Cottidae) comprises four species worldwide, three species in Japan, and two species in Korea. Cottiusculus species are characterized by a compressed head and body without scales, except for lateral-line scales, a preopercle with four spines, a curved uppermost preopercular spine with small dorsal spines, and teeth on the upper jaws, vomer, and palatines. Two Cottiusculus species have been recorded in Korea: Cottiusculus gonez and Cottiusculus nihonkaiensis. Among these, "jeom-jul-hoet-dae" specimens were initially identified as Cottiusculus schmidti by many Korean Ichthyologists. However, since C. nihonkaiensis was reported by Kai and Nakabo (2009), most such specimens have been identified as C. nihonkaiensis. To clarify the taxonomic status of "jeom-jul-hoet-dae", we conducted morphological and molecular analyses collected from the coasts of South Korea, and compared our findings with previous reports. Japanese and Korean C. nihonkaiensis specimens mostly consistent in some proportional measurements, our molecular results indicate that they are the same species. C. nihonkaiensis, "jeom-jul-hoet-dae" distinguished from other congers by combination of following characters: simple nasal spines, two branched cirri at the upper jaw, cirri at the opercular, preopercular, and lateral lines, and a number of blotches below the lateral line.
