Highly phosphorylated nucleotides were investigated to assure whether the eucaryotic Aspergillus niger produce these substances or not during the differentiation. Investigation was extended to see how organic phosphate interacts with inorganic polyphosphate during development, and high molecular weight RNA-polyphosphate complex was detected in 2.6% polyacrylamide gel by electrophoresis. Guanosine tetraphosphate was found in vesicle and phialide forming mycelia and spore forming body by PEI cellulose TLC. It is revealed that guanosine tetraphosphate is a common substance for spore formation in eucaryotic microorganisms as well as in procaryotic. Especially, prior to sporulation, protein bound RNA and protein bound phosphate may occur as a result of reorganization of cellular materials. The evidence was obtained by the fact of differential increase of optical density ratio between the samples from different developmental stages of this fungus. In 2.6% polyacrylamide gel which was run to electrophoresis, high molecular weight RNA (mostly rRNA) was found to couple and to make RNA-polyphosphate complex. The complex was examined with enzymes and radioactive isotope of $^{32}P$. (enzymic test was not reported here.) RNA-polyphosphate complex might be another sort of highly phosphorylated nucleotide or rRNA beside guanosine-tetraphosphate.
We have studied pharmacokinetics of a new anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) agent VP-0501 and its amino acid prodrug VP-0501AL which is designed to improve oral bioavailability. After oral administration at 100 mg/kg dose in rats (n = 4), VP-0501 was not detectable in plasma (<50 ng/ml), while after the administration of VP-0501AL, VP-0501 was quantitatively detected, at least for 8 hrs, with Cmax of ca. $2.5{\mu}g/ml$ and AUC of $8hr^{\ast}{\mu}g/ml$. When VP-0501 was intravenously administered at 50mg/kg, this compound appeared at a marginal level in plasma with AUC of $2hr^{\ast}{\mu}g/ml$, $t_{1/2}$ of 2 hr, $C_0$ of $0.7{\mu}g/ml$, and MRT of 3 hr. On the other hand, with intravenous VP-0501AL at the same dose, both the prodrug VP-0501AL and its metabolite VP-0501 appeared comparatively at higher level in the plasma: pharmacokinetic parameters of VP-0501AL including $Vd_{\beta}$, AUC, $t_{1/2,{\beta}}$, $C_0$, $CL_{tot}$, and MRT were ca. 2 L/kg, $70hr^{\ast}{\mu}g/ml$, 2 hr, $180{\mu}g/ml$, 0.7 L/hr/kg, and 1 hr, respectively. These results demonstrate that attachment of amino acid alanine to VP-0501 is an effective approach for improvement of its oral bioavailability. Therefore, VP-0501AL is expected to become a new highly bioavailable and potent anti-AIDS drug candidate/lead compound.
This study estimated the impacts of the interest rate change on the forest products import quantities in Korea. The first objective is to analyze whether there is any causal relationship between change in the interest rate and changes in the import quantities of forest products in Korea. And the second objective is to evaluate the dynamics of the impacts of the interest rate change on the forest products import quantities in Korea. The relationship between the interest rate and the import quantity was represented by bivariate vector autoregressive model. Whether there is any causal relationship between change in the interest rate and changes in the import quantities of forest products was analyzed by the causality test. And the dynamics of the impacts of the interest rate change on the forest products import quantities were evaluated by variance decomposition analysis and impulse response analysis. The import quantity of forest products can be explained by the lagged interest rate variables and the lagged import quantity variables in Korea. Change in the interest rate causes change in the plywood import quantity in Korea. In the bivariate model of the plywood import quantity, after three months, the interest rate change accounts for about twenty percent of variation in the import quantity, and its own change accounts for about eighty percent of variation in the import quantity. On the other hand, the impact of a shock to the interest rate is significant for about six months on the import quantity of plywood in Korea. That is, if the interest rate change had an impact on the import quantity of plywood in Korea, it was only of a short-term nature.
This study aims to clarify the effect of forest management practices(thinning and pruning) on soil physical properties and water quality to get the fundamental information on the facility of purifying water quality after forestry practices. Rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, soil and stream water were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis, in Kwangnung Experimental Forest for 6 months from March 1 to August 7, 1998. Average tree height of the management site increased by 1.8m and 0.6m more than that of the non-management site in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis, respectively. Increment of average D.B.H. at the management site showed 4.7cm and 1.4cm more in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis compared with that at non-management sites. Coarse(less than pF2.7) and total porosities of A layer soil at the management site increased more than those at the non-management sites in both stands. Otherwise, soil bulk density resulted in being reversely. Water qualities of throughfall, stemflow and soil water were buffered more by the management practice in both.
This study was carried out to investigate distributional condition of rare plants and useful plant resources, and to verify distributional patterns of understory vegetation associated with the upper layer's vegetation structure. Total 59 families, 160 genera, 218 kinds of vascular plants were identified at the study site including 6 rare plants designated by Korea Forest Service (Lloydia triflora Bak., Trillium kamtschaticum Pall., Lilium distichum Nakai, Anemone koraiensis Nakai, Iris odaesanensis Y.N. Lee, Viola diamantica Nakai). Twenty three species of useful plant resources were also identified at the site; 8 of them showed clustered distributions and the others were prone to scatter. Actual vegetation of this study area consisted of one natural community dominated by Quercus mongolica Fisch. and three disturbed communities of Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriere, Abies holophylla Max. and/or a herbaceous vegetation resulting from forest removal and strong wind of mountain top. This classification was strongly supported by cluster analysis based on the surveyed plot data. Distributional patterns of understory vegetation within forest stand were somewhat related to overstory vegetation structure, but showed a different tendency according to site condition, species composition, and competitive pressure among understory vegetation. Therefore, in order to protect the important understory components as forest genetic resources, forest treatments such as density control of overstory should be implanted based on understanding of impact on understory's dynamics and growing condition.

This study aims to clarify the effect of forest management practices(thinning and pruning) on water quality to get the fundamental information on the facility of cleansing water quality after forest operation. Rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis in Kwangnung Experimental Forest for 6 months from May 4, to November 1, 1999. Average tree height in the management sites increased by 0.5m more than that in the non-management sites in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis, respectively. Increment of average D.B.H. at the management sites grew 3.5cm and 2.6cm more in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis compared with that at non-management sites. Average pH of the total amount for the event in throughfall and stemflow was higher than that of throughfall and stemflow of the beginning of the event at the management and non-management sites. Average electrical conductivity of throughfall and stemflow at the beginning of the event was higher than that of the total amount for the event at management and non-management sites. Water qualities of throughfall and stemflow were buffered more by the management practice in both. The forest management may affect purification of water quality of throughfall and stemflow in Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis.
The American bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana was imported from Japan for farming for the human consumption in 1970's and introduced populations were a great threat to native habitats in the pond and lake ecosystem. However, it is thought that the population of bullfrog has rapidly declined for past years in Korea. In this study, we investigated the intra-genetic diversity of R. catesbeiana habitated in Korea. The nucleotide sequences of 1,215bp mitochondrial ND1/tRNA region in bullfrogs sampled from 5 sites in Jeollanamdo were analyzed and compared to the original sequence of R. catesbeiara reported in Genbank. The nucleotide similarity between Korean and North American bullfrog was ranged from 98.7% to 100% based on kimura-2-parameter distance. In addition, bullfrogs analyzed in this study were clustered into two groups with one including Jangheung and the other including Gwangju populations in the neighbor-joining tree. North American R. catesbeiana was grouped in Jangheung cluster, indicating that there is the very low genetic difference between Korean and North American populations. The maximum parsimony tree in which North American R. catesbeiana was set as an outgroup suggests that Jangheung group represents the introduced population to Korea. Taken together, the results indicate that the population of R. catesbeiana in Korea has not segregated geographically yet, after the introduction.
A sediment core from the Cheollipo arboretum ($36^{\circ}$ 47' 57'N, $126^{\circ}$ 09' 04') was studied for pollen analysis in order to reconstruct postglacial vegetational change and environmental changes around the central western region of the Korean Peninsula. The record shows four pollen assemblage zones: Zone CHL-I, Quercus stage (ca. 9,300$\sim$6,200 yr BP): zone CHL-II, Quercus-Pinus stage (ca. 6,200$\sim$4,600 yr BP); zone CHL- III, Pinus-Quercus stage (ca. 4,600$\sim$1,160 yr BP): zone CHL-IV and Pinus stage (ca. 1,160 yr BP-present). During the 9,300$\sim$8,500 yr BP, the early Holocene, researchers have guessed a piece of cool-temperate norihern/altimontane mixed coniferous and deciduous broad-leaved forest. Between 8,500$\sim$4,600 yr BP the Quercus dominated the landscape of study area and the established dates of this typical cool-temperate central/montane deciduous broad-leaved forest vegetation might be ca. 6500 yr BP, and then the Pinus developed around the site at ca. 5,700 yr BP. The abrupt increase of Pinus and NAP (non-arboreal pollen) after ca. 1,100 yr BP indicates the vegetation changes due to human activities. From the dynamics of the Chenopodiaceae pollen indicating salt marsh and freshwater pollen flora such as Typha, Trapa, Nymphoides and so forth, we suggest that the tidal flat was altered into freshwater lake around 6,500 yr BP.
Forest harvest as large scale artificial disturbance makes edge environment in both clear-cutted and forested habitat. To clarify the development and recovery process of forest edge after disturbances is essential to understand vegetation responses and landscape level consequences such as edge-distance. In Korea, after clear-cutting, edge-related changes of environment and vegetation was not clarified yet. In Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) forest, by applying space-for-time approach (sites with undisturbed and 1, 3, 10, 16 yr after cutting), the edge-related change of plant abundance and abiotic factors were determined for 20 line-transect (60 m) and 340 ($1m{\times}5m$) quadrats, and clarified depth and duration of the disturbance. Immediately after edge formation, within 15m form the edge, biotic and abiotic factors such as cover, richness, canopy openness, temperature and moisture content exhibited larger changes compared to forest interior. Plant abundance and abiotic variables were stabilized at the level of forest inside within 16 yr and 10 yr after edge creation, respectively. Woody (tree and shrub) species generally was showed larger increment with proximity to edge than did herb or graminoid species. In addition, negative interactions between woody and herbaceous species were detected during the period of forest edge closure. Our results suggested that depth of forest edge formed by clear-cutting of Korean red pine forest was at least from 15 m to 20 m and edge effect were likely sustained more than 16 years. As the first empirical study on edge-distance between two contrast habitats of clear-cutted and adjacent forest in South Korea, the analytical reality on landscape structure and habitat patches can be improved.

In order to understand the population dynamics of red tide dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans, we examined its hydrographical and bio-ecological characteristics at 19 to 20 stations of Gwangyang Bay during all four seasons from 2010 to 2012. During the 3-year period, N. scintillans was seasonally abundant during summer with water temperatures ranging from $15^{\circ}C$ to $22^{\circ}C$ and salinity ranging from 25 psu to 30 psu. On the other hand, N. scintillans population density significantly decreased in spring, fall and winter, although they were present even in lower temperatures (< $4^{\circ}C$). However, high water temperature (> $27^{\circ}C$) and low salinity (< 12 psu) led to the disappearance of N. scintillans population. Chl-a concentration in winter, spring and fall was positively correlated with N. scintillans population density, whereas the N. scintillans population was negatively correlated with Chl-a concentration in summer. This implies that densities of prey population such as diatoms are one of important contributing factor for maintaining abundance of N. scintillans in winter, spring and fall and for increasing abundance of N. scintillans in summer. During summer season, bio-accumulation of N. scintillans population by the wind from southwest is also considered to be a key factor in triggering the formation of large-scale blooms in Gwangyang Bay.
