  • Load imbalance is a serious impediment to achieving good performance in parallel processing. Global load balancing schemes cannot adequately manage to balance parallel tasks generated from a single application. Dynamic loop scheduling methods are known to be useful in balancing parallel loops on shared-memory multiprocessor machines. However, their centralized nature causes a bottleneck for the relatively small number of processors in a network of workstations because of order-of-magniture differences in communication overheads. Moreover, improvements of basis loops scheduling methods have not effectively dealt with irregularly distributed workloads in parallel loops, which commonly occur in applications for a network of workstation. In this paper, we present a new reconfigurable and decentralized balancing method for parallel loops on a network of workstations. Since our method supplements performance balancing with those tranditional load balancing methods, it minimizes the overall execution time.

  • Cluster system provides attractive scalability in terms of compution power and memory size. With the advances in high speed computer network technology, cluster systems are becoming increasingly competitive compared to expensive MPPs (massively parallel processors). Load balancing is very important issue since an inappropriate scheduling of tasks cannot exploit the true potential of the system and can offset the gain from parallelization. In parallel processing program, it is difficult to predict the load of each task before running the program. Furthermore, tasks are interdependent each other in many ways. The dynamic load balancing algorithm, which evaluates each processor's load in runtime, partitions each task into the appropriate granularity and assigns them to processors in proportion to their performance in cluster systems. However, if the communication cost between processing nodes is expensive, it is not efficient for all nodes to attend load balancing process. In this paper, we restrict a processor that attend load balancing by the communication cost and the deviation of its load from the average. We simulate various models of the cluster system with parameters such as communication cost, node number, and range of workload value to compare existing load balancing methods with the proposed dynamic algorithms.

  • After starting digital terrestrial broadcasting, there have been a number oftrials to provide new services like data broadcasting on a spare bandwidth of a DTV channel. Recently, the Push-VOD service, which provides A/V contents on that bandwidth, gets more attention and is being standardized as NRT(Non-Real-Time) by ATSC. However, it is highly probable that the contents transmitted in this way contain many errors due to the DTV receiving environment. Thus, in order to improve the reliability of transmission, the contents should be transmitted repeatedly several times, considering the unidirectional property of DTV terrestrial network. In this paper, we propose a method to calculate the optimal number of repetitions to transmit each contents in a way that minimizes the number of errors occured, when trying to transmit several contents to the receiver in a restricted time, using Markov-chain modeling and dynamic programming approach.

  • In this paper, we presented the dynamic random access channel allocation method under the priority based scheduling policy in order to improve the system performance of HIPERLAN/2 standardized by ETSI According to the scheduling policy, AP scheduler primarily allocates the resource to the collision MT This scheduling policy bring about decreasing the transmission delay of collision MT Dynamic RCH(random access channel) allocation method decreases the collision probability by increasing the number of RCH slots in case of low traffic. While it increases the maximum throughput by increasing the number of the data transmission slots in case of high traffic Therefore dynamic allocation method of RCH slots decreases the scheduling delay and increases the throughput When we evaluate the performance of presented method based on standards, we saw that the presented method improve the performance of the MAC protocol in terms of throughput and transmission delay.

  • In this paper, task scheduling and load balancing methods of multifrontal solution methods of finite element structural analysis in a modern multicore machine are introduced. Many structural analysis problems have generally irregular grid and many kinds of properties and materials. These irregularities and heterogeneities lead to bottleneck of parallelization and cause idle time to analysis. Therefore, task scheduling and load balancing are desired to reduce inefficiency. Several kinds of multithreaded parallelization methods are presented and comparison between static and dynamic task scheduling are shown. To reduce the idle time caused by irregular partitioned subdomains, computational load balancing methods, Balancing all tasks and minmax task pairing balancing, are invented. Theoretical and actual elapsed time are shown and the reason of their performance gap are discussed.

  • A dynamic adaptive streaming server consumes high processor power because it handles a large amount of transcoding operations at a time. For this purpose, multi-processor architecture is mandatory for which effective transcoding task distribution strategies are essential. In this paper, we present the design and implementation details of the transcoding workload distribution schemes at a 2-tier (frontend node and backend node) transcoding server. For this, we implemented four schemes: 1) allocation of transcoding tasks to appropriate back-end nodes, 2) task scheduling in the back-end node and 3) the communication between front-end and back-end nodes. Experiments were conducted to compare the estimated and the actual power consumption in a real testbed to verify the efficacy of the system. It also proved that the system can reduce the load on each node to optimize the power and time used for transcoding.

  • Sensor networks monitor the environment, collect sensed data, and relay the data back to a collection point. Although sensor nodes have very limited hardware resources, they require an operating system that can provide efficient resource management and various application environments. In addition, the wireless sensor networks require the code update previously deployed to patch bugs in program and to improve performance of kernel service routines and application programs. This paper presents EPRCU (Easy to Perform Remote Code Update), a new operating system for wireless sensor nodes, which has enhanced functionalities to perform remote code update. To achieve an efficient code update, the EPRCU provides dynamic memory allocation and program memory management. It supports the event-driven kernel, which uses priority-based scheduling with the application of aging techniques. Therefore, the proposed operating system is not only easy to perform wireless communication with the remote code update but also suitable for various sensor network applications.

  • As the use of digital videos is getting popular, there is an increasing demand for efficient browsing and retrieval of video. To support such operations, effective video indexing should be incorporated. One of the most fundamental steps in video indexing is to parse video stream into shots and scenes. Generally, it takes long time to parse a video due to the huge amount of computation in a traditional single computing environment. Previous studies had widely used Round Robin scheduling which basically allocates tasks to each slave for a time interval of one quantum. This scheduling is difficult to adapt in a heterogeneous environment. In this paper, we propose two different parallel parsing algorithms which are Size-Adaptive Round Robin and Dynamic Size-Adaptive Round Robin for the heterogeneous distributed computing environments. In order to show their performance, we perform several experiments and show some of the results.
