Gravel is commonly employed to enhance the bearing capacity of foundations and provide stable support for structures. However, effectively assessing the ground characteristics in the presence of gravel poses significant challenges. This study aims to compare the resolution of ground containing gravel using electrical resistivity, elastic wave surveys, and ground penetration radar (GPR). Nondestructive methods are applied at construction sites where soil improvement is carried out using gravel. The experiments focus on shallow depths, and the obtained results cover depths up to 2 m. Both the electrical resistivity and elastic wave techniques exhibit similar behavior in their findings, indicating comparable outcomes. However, GPR has limitations in observing the characteristics of ground with gravel. Dynamic cone-penetration tests were conducted to validate these findings. The electrical resistivity and elastic wave profiles exhibited similar behaviors in localized areas, further supporting their compatibility and reliability.
The combustion characteristics of four kinds of wood specimens, such as Japan cedar, spruce, lauan, and red pine, were tested using the standards of Cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1, 2) and smoke density tester (ASTM E 662). Japan cedar caught fire the quickest but the mean heat release rate was the lowest, $58.52kW/m^2$. The mean heat release rate of red pine appeared to be the highest, $71.75kW/m^2$. The lauan and Japan cedar generated relatively large amounts of carbon monoxide while the red pine and the spruce generated relatively large amounts of carbon dioxide. The red pine generated large amounts of smoke and the spruce generated the least amounts of smoke than the other samples. The total smoke release rate in the dynamic method was the highest in red pine and the lowest in spruce. The smoke density of red pine in the static method was highest in the non-flaming and flaming methods. In the non-flaming method, the smoke density of lauan was the second highest, whereas the flaming method was the least. In terms of the heat release rate, the fire risk from red pine was highest among the four test specimens. From the viewpoint of smoke generation, red pine was the most dangerous material in both dynamic and static methods.
An investigation of a void and a loose layer of the ground is essential in order to prevent the losses of life and properties caused by subsidence and sinkage of the ground. Recently, studies on the ground penetrating radar survey have been actively conducted in order to estimate the void and the loose layer of the ground. However, an error can be committed by contrarily predicting a dense ground and a loose layer because the ground penetrating radar estimates an interface depth between geo-materials that have different electrical impedances. In this study, a loose ground depth is estimated using the characteristics of the reflected electromagnetic wave obtained from the ground penetrating radar survey. To gather the signals according to the loose ground depths, the ground penetrating radar survey is conducted on a field which underwent a huge ground settlement. In addition, the dynamic cone penetration test is performed to verify the result of the loose ground depth estimation from the ground penetrating radar survey. From the analysis of the reflection characteristics of the electromagnetic wave, a phase of an electromagnetic wave reflected from a denser soil layer is found to be identical with that of the first measured signal. On the other hand, a phase of an electromagnetic wave reflected from the loose soil layer is found to be opposed to that of the first detected signal. The comparison between the dynamic cone penetration index and electromagnetic signals by the ground penetrating radar shows that the estimated depth of the loose or dense layer is perfectly matched with a high reliability. The ground penetrating radar survey and the signal analysis performed in this study can be used not only for the survey of interface depth between the discontinuity layers but also for the estimation of the loose layer.
The construction timeline for earthworks can be significantly reduced by substituting the conventional layer-by-layer compaction using a vibratory roller with single-layer compaction through the rapid impact compaction (RIC) method. Dynamic load compaction is well-suited for coarse-grained soils like sand. However, as the supply of sand, the primary reclamation material, becomes scarcer, the utilization of soil with fines is on the rise. To implement the dynamic load compaction, such as RIC, with reclaimed materials containing fines, it's imperative to determine the effective improvement depth. In this study, we assess the impact of the RIC method on the effective improvement depth for clean sand and public fill with fines, comparing field test results before and after RIC application. Our focus is on the cone resistance (qc) as it pertains to compaction quality control criteria. In conclusion, it becomes evident that standardizing the cone resistance is vital for the quality control of various reclaimed soils with fines. We have evaluated the compaction quality control criteria corresponding to a relative density (Dr) of 70% for clean sand as Qtn,cs = 110. As a result of this analysis, we propose new quality control criteria for qc, taking into account the fines content of reclaimed soils, which can be applied to RIC quality control.

The plate loading test(PLT) and the field density test are mainly used on the construction of embankments to control the compaction of a limited layer thickness. These two test methods are very time consuming and inefficient, but they are still commonly used as the methods of quality control for soil compaction. In the last 3 decades, many devices such as geogauge, light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD) and dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP) etc., have been introduced into the engineering market with the objective of acquiring in situ stiffness properties of the compacted soil layers. Recently, a new type of sensor, called compactometer, which in mounted on the drum of a roller and measures impact forces continuously with GPS, called as Continuous Compaction Control(CCC), has come into use in many countries such as America, Germany, Japan and so on. The main objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of these new devices as quality control and assurance devices for compacted soil layers. Based on this study, compactometer and the LFWD results werestrongly correlated with the result obtained from the PLT and the field density test.

The earthwork is a core process of all constructions, and compaction measurement of earthwork play an important role in improving productivity. The analog tests such as Plate Bearing Test and Sand-cone occupy current compaction measurement techniques. Due to advanced 4th Industrial Revolution, research on analog tests combined smart construction technology are actively conducted. DCPT (Dynamic Cone penetration Test), simpler and faster than conventional tests, has recently on rise. However, it is also an analog that measures data manually and has several disadvantages such as history management and data verification. The IoT-based DCPT system developed in this study combines digital wire sensors, mobile phones, and Bluetooth with conventional DCPT. Compare to conventional test methods, IoT-based DCPT has advantages such as performance time, single-person measurement, low cost, mobile-based management, and real-time data verification. In addition, a test bed was built to verify IoT-based DCPT. The test bed was built under similar conditions to the actual earthworks site through roller equipment. DCPT data obtained from 322 stations. As a result, IoT-based DCPT showed good performance, and the test bed was also showed stable results as the compaction was carried out.
Small amount of salt and various microorganisms are contained in natural soils or clays near the shore. In this study, most common clay minerals such as kaolinite and bentonite are used to evaluate the effect of salt and microorganism on liquid and plastic limits. The effect of time after mixing clays with water was also investigated for the consistency limits of clays. The test was conducted immediately, 1 day, or 7 days after mixing soils. For liquid limit tests two different test methods were used, the percussion cup method by Casagrande and the fall cone method. When sea water or microbial solution was used for mixing soils rather than distilled water, the liquid limit of kaolinite decreased by 6-15% and that of bentonite further decreased up to 37-53%. The liquid limit obtained from the fall cone method was approximately 10% for bentonite and 20% for kaolinite, which are higher than those from the percussion cup method. The effect of time on liquid and plastic limits was significant for those tested immediately or 1 day later but the values obtained after 1 day or 7 days did not vary a lot, regardless of soils, mixing waters or test methods.

Geological field surveys and a series of laboratory tests were conducted to obtain data related to landslides in Sancheok-myeon, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea where many landslides occurred in the summer of 2020. The magnitudes of various factors' influence on landslide occurrence were evaluated using logistic regression analysis and an artificial neural network. Undisturbed specimens were sampled according to landslide occurrence, and dynamic cone penetration testing measured the depth of the soil layer during geological field surveys. Laboratory tests were performed following the standards of ASTM International. To solve the problem of multicollinearity, the variation inflation factor was calculated for all factors related to landslides, and then nine factors (shear strength, lithology, saturated water content, specific gravity, hydraulic conductivity, USCS, slope angle, and elevation) were determined as influential factors for consideration by machine learning techniques. Minimum-maximum normalization compared factors directly with each other. Logistic regression analysis identified soil depth, slope angle, saturated water content, and shear strength as having the greatest influence (in that order) on the occurrence of landslides. Artificial neural network analysis ranked factors by greatest influence in the order of slope angle, soil depth, saturated water content, and shear strength. Arithmetically averaging the effectiveness of both analyses found slope angle, soil depth, saturated water content, and shear strength as the top four factors. The sum of their effectiveness was ~70%.
In this study, the shear wave velocity of the ground was measured using Flat TDR, and the precision analysis of the measured value and the verification of field applicability were performed. The shear wave velocity measurement value was derived in the field using the piezo-stack combined in the Flat TDR. analyzed. As a result of the experiment, the average value of the change in shear wave speed at the time of grout material injection was 10.15 m/s at the beginning of age, and the average value of the change in shear wave speed after the 7th to 14th days was 65.99 m/s, showing a tendency to increase with age. Also, it was found that dry density and shear wave speed increased as the water content increased on the dry side, and that the dry density and shear wave rate decreased as the water content increased on the wet side as the water content increased. The shear modulus value derived from the field test was confirmed to be a minimum of 17.36 MPa and a maximum of 28.13 MPa, confirming a measurement value similar to the reference value. Through this, it can be seen that the measured value of the shear modulus using Flat TDR is reliable data, and it can be determined that the compaction management of the site can be effectively managed in the future.
The reasonable assessment of the shear stiffness of a dredged soft ground and soft clay is difficult due to the soil disturbance. This study addresses the development and application of a new in-situ shear wave measuring apparatus (field velocity probe: FVP), which overcomes several of the limitations of conventional methods. Design concerns of this new apparatus include the disturbance of soils, cross-talking between transducers, electromagnetic coupling between cables, self acoustic insulation, the constant travel distance of S-wave, the rotation of the transducer, directly transmitted wave through a frame from transducer to transducer, and protection of the transducer and the cable. These concerns are effectively eliminated by continuous improvements through performing field and laboratory tests. The shear wave velocity of the FVP is simply calculated, without any inversion process, by using the travel distance and the first arrival time. The developed FVP Is tested in soil up to 30m in depth. The experimental results show that the FVP can produce every detailed shear wave velocity profiles in sand and clay layers. In addition, the shear wave velocity at the tested site correlates well with the cone tip resistance. This study suggests that the FVP may be an effective technique for measuring the shear wave velocity in the field to assess dynamic soil properties in soft ground.
