  • This paper introduces a modified Karagozian & Case concrete model (K&C model) for the numerical analysis of a steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) structure subjected to projectile impact. The original K&C model was calibrated to consider the effects of steel fibers accurately by modifying the strength surfaces and input parameters. Single element tests were then conducted and compared with uniaxial and triaxial compressive data to verify the modified model. With the application of a dynamic increase factor, the finite element model of the SFRC structure subjected to projectile impact was constructed. Thereafter, the applicability of the modified material model was examined by comparisons with the experimental results.

  • In this study, the direct tensile properties of amorphous metallic fiber-reinforced cement based composites according to the strain was evaluated. A thin plate-shape amorphous metallic fiber with 15mm and 30mm in length was used. And fiber-reinforced cement based composites were prepared with contents of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0%. The direct tensile test was conducted under the conditions of $10^{-6}/s(static)$ and $10^1/s(dynamic)$ strain rate. As a results, amorphous metallic fiber with a length of 15mm was observed in pull-out behavior from the cement matrix because of the short fiber length and large portion of mixed fiber. On the other hand, amorphous metallic fiber with a length of 30mm were not pulled out from matrix because the bonding force between the fiber and matrix was large due to rough surface and large specific surface area. However, fracture occurred because thin plate shape fibers were vulnerable to shear force. Tensile strength, strain capacity and toughness were improved due to the increase in the fiber length. The dynamic increase factor of L15 was larger that of L30 because the bonding performance of the fiber-matrix interface is significantly affected by the strain rate.

  • To investigate the effects of soil properties of the soft zone around a pile subjected 1,o the horizontal harmonic vibration, the parametric study is perfomed. The determination of the soil reaction or stiffness of the Winkler springs representing the soil around a pile is performed by dividing the soil profile into a number of homogeneous obtained from this study are as follows : 1) The real and imaginary parts of the stiffness show clear variations for the different shear modulus ratios, poisson's ratios, and distance retios to outer boundary as the dimensionless frequency increases. The differences are more pronounced for the imaginary part of the stiffness. 2) The stiffness of soil shows clear decrease. The real parts of the stiffness show larger as the frequency increases. On the other hand, the imaginary parts of the stiffness show smaller.

  • Recently the application of geophysical well logging to geotechnical site investigation is increasing, because the merit that geophysical logs provide the high resolution and in-situ physical properties in volumes of rock surrounding the borehole. Geophysical well logs are used to identify lithologic boundaries and fracture, to determine the physical properties of rock(i.e., density, velocity etc.), and to detect permeable fracture zones that could be conduits for ground water movement through the rocks. The principle of heat-pulse meter, the calibration of gamma-gamma logging, and principles and data processing of full waveform sonic logging are briefly reviewed, and the case studies of geophysical logs are discussed. Correlation between velocity by sonic logging and rock mass classification such as RMR(Rock Mass Rating) value is considered.

  • In this research, shaking table tests for three types of gravity quay wall system were performed to analyze the influence of excess pore pressure in backfill soils on the natural frequency of gravity quay wall systems. The elastic modulus of backfill soils was also estimated from the back analyses using the results of the shaking table tests. From the test results, it was observed that as the magnitude of excess pore pressures increased, the natural frequency of the gravity quay wall system decreased and vice versa. The natural frequency was about 44Hz when no excess pore pressure was generated in backfill soils, and decreased to about 16Hz at the pore pressure ratio of 0.55. The elastic modulus of backfill soils reached the constant maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was less than 0.2, and abruptly decreased as the pore pressure ratio became larger than that. The elastic modulus of backfill soils decreased to $10\%$ of the maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was 0.55.

  • The dynamic properties of short-fiber reinforced chloroprene rubber with different interphase conditions and fiber contents have been studied as functions of frequency, amplitude and temperature. The loss factor(LF) slightly increased more than 1.33% of strain and the dynamic ratio(DR) rapidly decreased with increasing strain amplitude. The LF rapidly decreased with increasing frequency especially more than 50Hz. The DR showed the lower when it compared to virgin material with increasing frequency. The LF showed the maximum at $65^{\circ}$ and rapidly decreased after that temperature. The DR showed the lower when it compared with virgin rubber with increasing temperature. Generally, the better interphase condition showed the lower LF and DR at the same testing condition. Therefore, the short-fiber reinforced rubber could have the better isolation when the frequency ratio is more than $\sqrt{2}$ compared with frequency ratio less than $\sqrt{2}$.

  • In a previous study, the impact factor response spectrum and corresponding method for evaluating the load carrying capacity of bridges was suggested to improve the existing evaluation method. To verify the applicability of the suggested method, which is based on the frequency of bridges, the dynamic characteristic test for an actual single span simply-supported bridge was conducted. Through a field test under ambient traffic conditions, the dynamic response of the bridge was obtained using wireless accelometers and its fundamental frequency was identified. The peak impact factor was determined from the identified frequency and the impact factor response spectrum. The load carrying performance variation of the bridge was estimated considering the performance reduction factor, which was calculated using the current and previous natural frequency and impact factor. From the result, the load carrying capacity of the bridge was decreased, but the capacity was still enough because its value is greater than the design live load. Through the overall procedures and technical details presented in this paper, the suggested evaluation method can be applied to actual bridges with the acceleration data measured under ambient traffic conditions and the impact factor response spectrum.

  • In this study, to evaluate the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced cement composites by strain rate, hydraulic rapid loading test system was developed. And compressive and tensile strength of the hooked steel fiber and polyamide fiber reinforced cement composite were evaluated. As a result, the compressive strength, strain capacity and elastic modulus were increased with increasing strain rate. The effect of compressive strength by type and volume fraction of fibers was not significant. The dynamic increase factor(DIF) of the compressive strength was higher than that of the CEB-FIP model code 2010 and showed a trend similar to that of ACI-349. The tensile strength and strain capacity were increased with increasing strain rate. The hooked steel fibers were drawn from the matrix. The tensile strength and strain capacity of hooked steel fiber reinforced cement composites were increased as the strain rate increased. The tensile strength and deformation capacity of the fiber reinforced cement composites were increased. And, hooked steel fibers were drawn from the matrix. On the other hand, because the bonding properties of polyamide fiber and matrix is large, polyamide fiber was cut-off with out pullout from matrix. The strain rate effect on the tensile properties of polyamide fiber reinforced cement composites was found to be strongly affected by the tensile strength of the fibers.

  • Recently, testing equipment which can run resonant column test altogether with the torsional shear test at the very highly controlled condition was developed at the University of Texas at Austin(U.S.A). With this equipment, the effects of high amplitude pre-straining vibrations on the dynamic properties of clean sands were studied. Tests showed the following results. Low amplitude shear modulus was gradually increased with little void ratio change as the number of high amplitude vibration cycles increased. Variation of volumetric strain with confining pressure for the pre -strained specimen under vibration was smaller than that of fresh specimen. Also the slope of the diagram for shear modulus and confining pressure relationship of the prestrained specimen was smaller than that of fresh specimens. These results agreed well with the analytical results.
