The present study investigates flow characteristics in a cavity with one rotating disk and co-rotating disks for application to HDD. The experiments are conducted for rotating Reynolds numbers of $5.5{\times}104$ to $1.10{\times}105$ and for gap ratios of 0.059 to 0.175 in a single rotating and 0.047 to 0.094 in co-rotating disk. Time-resolved velocity components and turbulence intensity on the rotating disks are obtained by using LDA measurements. Detailed Knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow vibration and heat transfer and to design head-arm assembly and hub height in HDD. The results indicate that the velocity field in HDD is changed largely by the rotating Reynolds numbers and hub height of the disk.
Dynamic instability of rotating disks is the most significant factor to limit its rotating speed. Application of composite materials to rotating disks may enhance the dynamic stability leading to a possible design of rotating disks with lightweight and high speed. Whereas much work has been done on the effect of transverse shear and rotary inertia, called Timoshenko effect, on the dynamic behavior of plates, there is little work on the correlation between the effect and the rotation of disk, especially nothing in case of composite disks. The dynamic equations of a rotating composite disk are formulated with the Timoshenko effect and the vibrational analysis is performed by using a commercial package MSC/NASTRAN. According to the results, the Timoshenko effect goes seesaw in some modes, unlike the well-known fact that the effect decreases as the rotating speed increases. And it can be concluded, based only on the present results, that decrement of the Timoshenko effect by disk rotation grows larger as the thickness ratio decreases, the diameter ratio increases, the modulus ratio increases, and the mode number increases.
The shrouded corotating disk flow has a simple figure on geometric basis, but has various and complicated forms of flow. this complicated flows can be variously applied to not only information storage device, but also turbomachinery which is greatly influenced by centrifugal force. This study measured its velocity to measure inner flow field with unique flow field univluenced, using LDV and subminiature hot-wire. The result of experiment shows that distribution limits of solid body rotation region, dimensionless velocity gradient and distribution limits of disk surface boundary layer(Ekman layer) are changed by the gap of disks and rotating speed. Circulating vortex which is near the shroud is effected by the gap of disks and rotating speed.
The behavior of the biological water treatment process on start-up operation was evaluated in the integrated recirculating aquaculture system consisting of a double drain type rearing tank ($2.5 m^3$), a sedimentation tank, a floating bead filter, a foam separator and a rotating biological contactor. A system was stocked with nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) at an initial rearing density of $2\%$ for 2 weeks for acclimated rotating biological contactor. The total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) level increased to $13.6 g/m^3$ on day 4 after adding feed and was decreased to $0.3 g/m^3$ on day 7. The total suspended solid was completely removed during overall experimental period.

The vibration and stability of thin, flexible corotating disks in an enclosed compressible fluid is investigated analytically and compared with the results of a single rotating disk. The discretized dynamical system of the corotating disks is derived in the compact form of a classical gyroscopic system similar with a single disk. For the undamped system, coupled structure-acoustic traveling waves destabilize through mode coalescence leading to flutter instability. However, it is found that the flutter regions of the corotating disks are wider than those of a single disk. A detailed investigation of the effects of dissipation arising from acoustic or disk damping is also performed. Finally, in the presence of both acoustic and disk dampings, the instability regions are found and compared with those of a single disk. Although this study does not allow a radial clearance between the disk and the enclosure, the computational frame work of the problem can be expanded to the system having the radial clearance in an enclosure.
Hard disk drived (HDD) in computer are used extensively as data storage capacity. The trend in the computer industry to produce smaller disk drives rotating at higher speeds requires an improved understanding of fluid motion in the space between disks. The distribution of pressure disturbance on disks has relation to flow structure. To investigate the flow structure, time-resolved hot-wire measurements of the circumferential velocity component were obtained for the flow between the center pair of four disks of common radius $R_2$ coretating at angular velocity ${\Omega}$ in a fixed cylindrical enclosure. Hot-wire supporter acts as an obstruction in this case. The effects of rotating speed and size of hot-wire supporter diameter between disks on the flow driven by disks were investigated. Velocity spectra at the fixed space were measured to obtain the structure of inner and outer region in flow field.

The configuration of coaxial co-rotating contained in shroud provides a useful model for investigating the characteristics of flow in the HDD. Reynolds number is defined as $Re_R={\Omega}{R_o}^2/{\upsilon},\;Re_H={\Omega}R_oH/{\upsilon}$ in present study. An experimental investigation was performed for turbulence profiles and PSD distribution and vortices frequency behavior for various range of $Re_R=2.43{\times}10^4{\sim}3.61{\times}10^5$. A laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) is used to obtain the velocity field of unobstructed co-rotating disks flow. Airflow pattern visualization between inner and outer region was compared with turbulence profiles measured from LDA. Outer detached shear layer and dead-zone without oscillating velocity fluctuation to circumferential mean were quantitively traced.
The study on the electrosorption of cobalt ions onto a porous activated carbon fiber (ACF) was performed to treat radioactive liquid wastes resulting from chemical or electrochemical decontamination and to regenerate the spent carbon electrode, Cyclic voltammetry was investigated on a rotating-disk electrode (RDE) to determine the region of potentials within which only double-layer charging should occur. The application of an electric potential increased the sorption of the cobalt ions. The adsorbed cobalt Ions could be released into the solution by reversing the appling potential, showing the reversibility of the process.

Local heat transfer characteristics inside a hard disk driver(HDD) are investigated in this study. The investigation is considered between disks co-rotating in a cylindrical enclosure. The gap spacing, rotating speed and head-arm positions are mainly considered to understand the flow and heat transfer in the co-rotating disks. The naphthalene sublimation technique is used to determine local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disk. Flow patterns inside the co-rotating disks are investigated using a Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) and also analyzed numerically. The results show that the heat transfer coefficients on the disk changed little with the gap spacing between disks. Heat transfer rates in the outer region increases with increasing rotating Renolds number, but the values normalized by that on a free rotating disk give a similar pattern for the tested cases. The head-arm inserted between the rotating disks destroys the inner region resulting in enhancement of heat transfer in that region.
