  • Objectives: To examine the association between serum gamma-glutamyltransferase(GGT) activity level and blood pressure, serum lipids in the male residents of rural area, we analyzed cross-sectionally the data of 379 male health examinees aged 40 years and older from rural areas in Gyeongsangnam-do prefecture in Korea. Methods: Blood pressure and concentration of serum lipids were compared between high and low level of serum GGT activity by t-test or Wilcoxon rank sum test. Possible confounding effects of age, body mass index and coffee drinking were adjusted by analysis of covariance. Results: Adjusted values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were higher in the group of high level of serum GGT activity in non-drinkers(P=0.055 and P=0.074 respectively) and drinkers(P=0.284 and P=0.398) of alcohol. Adjusted serum total cholesterol level was also higher in the group of high level of serum GGT activity in non-drinkers(P=0.052) but not in drinkers(P=0.981) of alcohol. In serum triglyceride, adjusted level was significantly higher in the group of high level of serum GGT activity in both non-drinkers(P=0.035) and drinkers(P=0.002) of alcohol. Conclusions: These results suggest the association of serum GGT activity and serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, or blood pressure in non-drinkres of alcohol.

  • The horn fish, Hemiramphus sajori TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL, is widely distributed in the coastal waters of Korea, Japan and Taiwan. On April 13, 1983, mature adults of the horn fish were collected from Changson channel, Namhae. The authors carried out artificial insemination on the field, and incubated the eggs and reared larvae in the laboratory. And these larvae were reared for about two weeks in glass jars, fed brine shrimp nauplii. The eggs of this species are demersal and adhesive, with 4 to 6 filaments at the animal pole and a filament at the vegetal pole. The diameter of these eggs varies 1.80 to 2.00 mm. The hatching took place in ca. 376 hours after fertilization. During the incubation period water temperature fluctuated between $13.5^{\circ}C\;and\;20.0^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were elongate in shape $7.40{\sim}8.00$ mm in total length with $40+16{\sim}17=56{\sim}57$ myomers. Many melanophore were distributed on the head, both sides of dorsal body contour, peritoneum and ventral line of the tail part. Four days after hatching, the larvae were from 9.00 to 9.65 mm in total length, at this tims the larvae absorbed the yolk completely, and became postlarvae. Fourteen days after hatching, the larvae attained 13.25 mm in total length, with 14 rays of the dorsal fin, 13 rays of the anal fin, and 4 rays of pectoral fin. The lower jaw has somewhat projected.

  • Early morphological changes of Omobranchus slogans (STEINDACHNER) (Family Blennidae) were studied based on the samples of 125 individuals collected from Changseon channel of Nam-hae in June 1973 and May 1979. Descriptions were made with particular emphasis on developmental changes of supraorbital region, fin rays, development of chromatophores and the preopercular spine. In the early stages the lateral profile of the supraorbital region is perpendicular to tile sagittal plane, however, in the later stages it becomes curved. In the early stage of 5.55 mm in total length the number of soft rays of dorsal fin is 18, and that of the anal fin 15. Ventral fin first appears as a premoidal proturberance. It fully developes into a fin composed of two soft rays in the stages of 12.9 mm in total length. The caudal fin rays first appear in the ventral part and in the stages of 6.15 mm in total length it gets one or two soft rays which bear 1-2 segments. In the later stages each ray bears more than 5 segments. Melanophores first appear as two black spots on the central part of the head. They are distributed on the opercle and the antero-dorsal surface of the trunk in the stage of 18mm in total length. At this stage the general chromatophore. pattern is identical to the adult stage. The anal fin bears melanophores at the basal part of the rays, and it is one of the remarkable morphological characters of this species. In early stages the preopercular spine develops reaching the basal part of the pectoral fin. In the later stages of 15 mm in total length relative length of the spine decreases to total length, and ie reaches only the distal margin of the opercular.

  • Scrub typhus and murine typhus are common endemic febrile illness in the fall in Korea. Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugomushi, murine typhus is caused by Rickettsia typhi. Trombiculid mites are known as both the vector and the reservoir host of O tsutsugamushi, the mites which transmit O tsutsugomushi have been reported to be Leptotrombidium pallidum and L scutellare. The author carried out an epidemiological study of scrub typhus and murine typhus in Kyodong-Myeon, Kanghwa-Gun, Incheon in relation to the residents and the host rodents, such as their distribution, seroepidemiology, and population density of chigger mites. 1. Out of 900 residents, 33(3.7%) showed positive reaction to O tsutsugamushi, 24(2.7%) to R typhi. 2. In the seropositives to O tsutsugamushi or R typhi, between the sixties and the seventies of the age were dominant. 3. In the seropositives to O tsutsugamushi serotypically Gilliam was dominant. 4. Among the total 42 field rodents trapped by the sherman traps, 18 rodents were Apodemus agrarius(42.9%), 13 rodents were Crocidura lasiura(31.0%), 5 rodents were Musmusculus(11.9%), 2 rodents(4.8%) were Crocidura suaveolens, Rattus norvegicus, Tscherskia triton, respectively. 5. Out of 42 field rodents, 25 were parasitized by 4,419 chigger mites, showing 59.5% of the infestation rate and 98.8 of the chigger index. L pallidum parasitized in A agrarius, C lasiura, M musculus, R norvegicus and T triton, and L scutellare parasitized only C lasiura. 6. Antibodies in the sera of field rodents against O tsutsugamushi and R typhi were investigated by indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique. Positive rate of antibody against O tsutsugamushi were 11.9(5 of 42) and all of the positive is A agrarius. Antibody against R typhi was not detected. These results might provide the basic information for the management of scrub typhus and murine typhus in Kyodong-myeon, where the epidemiological studies on scrub typhus and murine typhus was not carried out enough.

  • The roadkill that animals die after bumping by vehicles on the roads is acting as a factor to decrease the size of various animal populations. It has also been known to be the biggest artificial causations of Vertebrata deaths not only in urban areas but also protected areas such as national parks. Nevertheless, in the national park areas which are major protected national areas for conservation of national biodiversity and ecological diversity, snake roadkills occur frequently. Up to date, related studies are rare. Therefore, in this study, we described snake roadkill patterns on the roads in six national parks between 2006 and 2015. We identified total 736 snake roadkills compromising 10 different species. Five species, Rhabdophis lateralis, Elaphe dione, Gloydius ussuriensis, Lycodon rufozonatus, Gloydius brevicaudus occupied more than 91.7% of total roadkill cases. Active forager snakes were killed by roadkills more than ambush foragers, and the snake roadkill frequency was the highest in September, a migration period and in August when the young individuals dispersed at between 100 and 799 m altitude areas. Roads where roadkills were frequent lie between forest and hydrosphere or between forest and crop field road sides. Our results could be used to identify the trend of snake roadkills on the roads in national parks, and to establish effective roadkill mitigation measures and policies.

  • The present study was performed to analyze the infection status of trematode metacercariae in fishes caught from Chunamchosuchi (pond) located in Uichang-gun. Kyongsangnam-do. A total of 130 freshwater fish of 5 species was collected by a fish net and fish traps from November, 1995 to May, 1996. They were examined under a stereomicroscope after artificial digestion with pepsin-HCI solution. A total of 8 species or metacercaria, i. e. Clonorchis sinensis, Echinochnsnw japonicas, Cvathocotwle orientalis, Diplostomun sp.. Metorchis orientalis. Holostephcnw nipponicw, Exorchis oviformis and unidentified echinostome, was detected from them. The metacercariae of C. sinenesis were found in 8/20 (40.0%) Accnthorhodeus Qsmwsi, 20/20 (100%) Cutter breuiccudc, 31/45 (68.9) Cultriculus eigenmanni and 21/25 (84.0%) Pseunorasborc pronga, and the average number of metacercariae detected in each fish species were 1.9, 31.7. I5.3, and 73.0. From the above results, it was confirmed that fresh-water fishes from Chunamchosuchi (pond) were highly infected with metacercariae of avian trematode, i.e. C. orientolis, H. nipponicus. M. oui, entnlis, E. jcponicw and Diplostonum sp., and 4 species of fish. P. parvc, C. breuiccudn, C. eigenmnnni and A. asmussi, were infected with metacaecariae of C. sinensis.

  • The amputation of body parts of wild animals can affect their activities in the wild and the behavior of mothers raising their cubs can cause behavioral characteristics in their offspring. In 2017, an Asiatic black bear was caught in a snare at the Jirisan National Park and had a right forefoot amputation. It was released into the wild the same year and gave birth to two cubs. The seasonal analysis of the behavioral rites of five females who gave birth in the same year as this individual showed specific home ranges, activity altitudes, and movement distances compared to other populations. Physical disabilities in the mother could lead to difficulties in food activity, hibernation, and cub-rearing, but the bear's maternal instincts helped to overcome difficulties in the wild and ensure the cubs' survival. It also became a special experience in the process of promoting the restoration of Asiatic black bears at Jirisan National Park. Although the Asiatic black bear's cubs, which grew up in difficult conditions compared to other populations, are not currently causing problems, continuous monitoring will help determine the success of the disabled mother cub-rearing study. Furthermore, these case studies will be used to establish long-term management directions and plans for conflicts with people from various perspectives.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the natural environments and the changing socio-economic activities of the rice and fruit - centered rural village located in Sangju region, Kyongsangbuk-do. Its results are summarized in the followings. Firstly, most of the rural villages in Sangju region is located on the erosional basin of Sobaek range and the sedimentary region of Nakdong river and the farmer's life of those regions has been influenced by such a natural environment. Secondly, the reproduction structure of population in the rural village of Sangju region had been maintained until the 1970s. After that, however, it was broken because the young generation of the rural villages moved to large cities to get a job or to receive high level of education. Thirdly, the changing path of the rural villages of Sangju region was different based on a type of crop and its related mode of production after the 1980s. The socio-economic structure of the rural village has been developed based on either a rice oriented traditional mode of production or a fruit-oriented commercial mode of production. The two villages, Ch'ekdong 1 ri, Hamch'ang-up and Sinch'on 2 ri, Modong-myon have been changed according to the path of a traditional and commercial mode of production, respectively.

  • Although serum gamma-glutamyl transferase(GGT) has been widely used as a marker of alcoholic hepatic dysfunction, little is known as to behavioral correlates in the normal population. To examine the association between serum GGT activity and some behavioral factors in male rural population, data un health examination in a rural population (248 males aged 40 years and older) was analyzed Multiple linear regression and analysis of convariance were used to control the effect of confounding factors. Adjusted average differences in the level of serum GGT according to body mass index(BMI: $kg/m^2$) and alcohol intake(ml/day) were statistically significant(p=0.051 0<0.001 respectively). Serum GGT activity for BMII$\geq$25 was significantly higher than for BMI<25 in non-drinkers(p=0.007), but not significantly different in drinkers(p=0.892). Alcohol intake was significantly associated with elevated serum GGT activity for both BMI$\geq$25 and BMI<25(p<0.001, p=0.002 respectively). These findings suggest that alcohol drinking, obesity in non-drinkers are important factors associated with serum GGT in male rural population.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of New Deal under the New Labour government in Britain and examines the nature of New Deal with respect to workfare. The time difference of five years after the New Deal was put into effect shows that New Deal has contributed not only to include the socially excluded groups such as the young unemployed, the long-term unemployed, single parents, and the disabled into the labour market, but also to decrease the amount of income-based benefits providing for working generation. It can be said that the nature of New Deal under the New Labour is near to human capital development model rather than labour force attachment model. New Deal provides the opportunity of policy learning for the countries which pursue the reform of social security system to moving welfare beneficiaries being able to work into jobs. Policy learning can be summed up as follows. First, imposing mutual responsibility and obligations on unemployed person should be accompanied by implementing active labour market programmes of education and job training. Second, the delivery system which administrates workfare programmes should be decentralized in a local society. The cooperation between local government and enterprisers will be critical in implementing various employment programmes and moving unemployed person into jobs. Third, the case management for individual participating in workfare programme is necessary. The personal adviser should continue to provide employment services for the unemployed until he or she get a job and enter the state of self-reliance. Finally, the workfare programme should be firmly backed by the political leadership in order to overcome the oppositions of beneficiary groups under the existing social security system.
