This study was conducted to compare differences in fruit quality by harvest time of 'Fuji' apple fruit that was frozen on tree by unusual low temperature in that air temperature was under $-3.5^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours. Fruits were harvested at 1 day before, and 2 days and 6 days after freezing damage, respectively. Harvest's soluble solid contents in all treatments was over $14^{\circ}Bx$. Firmness and titratable acidity of fruit harvested after freezing damage was lower than those of fruit harvested before freezing damage. During cold storage, ethylene production of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction in the level of fruit quality during cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was more serious than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction of fruit quality during subsequent ambient temperature for 1 week after cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. In comparison of treatments that were harvested at different times after freezing damage, ethylene production and reduction in the level of fruit quality until 8 weeks of cold storage of fruit harvested at 6 days after freezing damage was lower than that of fruit harvested at 2 days after freezing damage. However, this difference by harvest time after freezing damage disappeared after 8 weeks of cold storage. Incidence of flesh browning was not affected by freezing at air temperature under $-3.5^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours.
In most cases, Geotechnical Structures installed in freezing areas require extra countermeasures for reducing freeze damage. However, in terms of domestic tunnels, studies and case reports for geotechnical structures such as tunnels and retaining walls are not fluently carried out, causing lack of research about ways to decrease freeze damage. For these causes, domestic design criteria about structures does not specifically institutionalization for geotechnical structures. This research have done on-site investigation about tunnels, cut slopes and retaining walls. Also, this research includes the process of analyzing the histories of maintenance for class 1 and class 2 structures that happened in the past 40 years, studying characteristics of structure's maintenance and reinforcement in different areas with different climate. As the result, it was analyzed that domestic geotechnical structures showed need for longer maintenance and reinforcement that are located in Gangwon mountain area, Gangwon north region and Gyeonggi north region where the temperature is relatively low. This research can be concluded in need for revision of design criteria for structures located in freeze damage area.

Tunnels constructed in cold regions can cause serious defects such as cracks and leaks due to external temperature changes in the portals and vents. In order to prevent the freezing damage of the tunnel, appropriate measures should be applied to the section where the freeze damage is concerned. However, the specific criteria and contents for judging whether or not the anti-freeze measures are applied are not presented. In this study, the laboratory freezing tests on the temperature changes of the concrete specimens under freezing conditions were carried out. And the freeze-thaw repetition cycle (F), which can judge the possibility of freezing damage, were presented based on the heat transfer quantity (W) by experimental results of case studies. Also, we propose a classification of cold regions considering the climatic characteristics of Korea for using it to efficient design and maintenance.

This study analyzed the causes of frost damage and freezing depth for concrete ballast sites in the Gangwon mountainous area, which has a high freezing index, and considered the equation for freezing depth in concrete roadbeds. Comparing the freezing depth tendencies of concrete roadbeds in the Gangwon mountainous area and Gangwon area, it was found that the freezing depth of concrete roadbeds was higher than that of the Gangwon area when the freezing index was less than 400. However, in sections with a freezing index greater than 400, the freezing depth was higher in the Gangwon area than in the concrete roadbeds. This study proposed an equation for computing the freezing depth in the Gangwon area to provide basic data for establishing preventive measures against frost damage during railway and road construction projects in the Gangwon region.

The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the pore structure and mechanical properties of early frost damaged concrete using electric arc furnace slag as aggregate. From the results, when the concrete is exposed to frost damage at an early age, the peak point of pores 100 to 150 ㎛ in diameter were transferred into larger one. When the freezing duration is not exceeded 24 hours, it is possible that the pore distribution of under the 200 ㎛ is maintained and pore size of over 500 ㎛ is not formed, and, the freezing resistance of concrete using EFG could be improved. When BFS was mixed in concrete using EFG as coarse aggregate, the relative strength is higher than that of natural coarse aggregate. Meanwhile, the elastic modulus and resonance frequency did not change significantly due to the early frost damage as compared with the compressive strength. So, it is necessary to analyze the correlation between the experimental results in order to evaluate the performance degradation due to early frost damage.

Concrete scaling is the progressive surface deterioration of susceptible subjected to freeze-thaw cycling in the presence of moisture. Particularly, it has been recognized that chlorides present in deicing agents can significantly increase concrete surface scaling. Domestic area of most be happened chloride deicer damage. Because daily mean temperature is below 0$^{\circ}C$ from the area of domestic most. Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, not only the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and ability to deterioration roadway surface materials but also the source of environmental damages. In this study, Use of (40, 27, 21MPa) pavement concrete analyze freeze-thaw test and scaling on the chlorides present.
The damage of the tunnel lining on the cold regions can be represented by cracks and leaks caused by freezing of ground water. However, domestically, the relevant construction guidelines are not provided so far. Thus, in this research, the mechanical behavior and thermal conductivity of designated tunnel area are measured using instrumentation system installed in the lining concrete inside tunnels in order to analysis their behavior with regard to temperature variations. Previous research mainly focused on the effect of temperature on the tunnel lining based on the air and initial ground temperature at urban regions. Thus, this study analyzes effects of air temperature and initial ground temperature of designated tunnel area at the cold regions. The temperature of the groundwater at the backfill of the tunnel lining are analyzed to evaluate the heating element. Numerical analyses are performed to evaluate the heating element with regard to the various initial ground temperatures.
Frost heave occurs when ground temperature decreases under $0^{\circ}C$ and soil volume expands, which causes roadway and buried pipe line failure due to differential heaving. There are several models to predict volumetric strain caused by frost heave, but they requires expertises who have professional background and experience related to numerical analysis. This study presents an evaluation method to predict volumetric strain caused by frost heave with fundamental physical properties of soils. The evaluation method is assessed with experimental results.

Globally, the frequency and intensity of abnormal climate events are increasing. Since this can directly damage lives and property, it is important to establish and implement an appropriate maintenance strategy in response to abnormal weather. Facilities built in cold regions where cold wave or heavy snow occurs frequently can be more damaged by freeze-thaw than facilities located in other regions. However, there are no clear criteria for quantitatively identifying the damage of freeze-thaw and how to cope with it. Therefore, based on the results of indoor freezing tests, the freezing conditions considering regional climate characteristics were selected as one day at -14℃, two days at -7℃ or three days at -5℃. As a result, it was confirmed that they were in the freeze-thaw environment in order of Daegwallyeing (8.3 times), Cheorwon (5.3 times) and Taebeak (4.9 times) in Gangwon region. Through this study, the evaluation criteria of freeze-thaw of road tunnels were newly proposed. The freeze-thaw evaluation criteria of the road tunnel presented in this study can be used for the quantitative evaluation and maintenance strategy of tunnels in cold regions.
Gangwon province which is located in northeast of Korea is the coldest region where average daily temperature is below zero during winter while the other regions are above zero. However, there have been insufficient researches on the insulation design and the effect of the insulation on the freezing damages, even though freezing damages were reported consistently in the lining of road tunnel during winter. In this study, to investigate the effect of insulations on the reduction of freezing damages, numerical analysis was performed considering geotechnical and meteorological characteristics in Gangwon province during winter. As a result, it was found that thickness of concrete and shotcrete in lining had negligible effect on the freezing depth while the insulation had significant effect on it. In addition, because the freezing depth is greatly affected by the thermal conductivity of the ground behind the lining in the period of cold weather, these effects should be considered in the estimation of the insulation thickness.
