  • A distribution survey was conducted from March to August 2021 to evaluate the distribution status, habitat characteristics, and threat of extinction of the Korean cold-water fish Ladislabia taczanowskii Dybowski (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae). Historical distribution reports were divided into 1997~2005, 2006~2012, 2013~2019, and distribution surveyed 169 sampling sites, and 1,040 individuals were collected from 72 sites. Areas where the habitat was confirmed were Namhan River (27 stations), Han River (17 stations), Bukhan River (16 stations), Samcheok Osipcheon (4 stations), Yeongokcheon (3 stations), Gangneung Namdaecheon (2 stations), Jeoncheon (1 station), Chucheon (2 stations). The main habitat of L. taczanowskii was upstream of the river with a high altitude of more than 300 m, 2~30 m water flow width, 0.3~1.5 m water depth, and high ratio (50~90%) boulder bottoms. The main reasons for the decline in population size were assumed as river works, construction of reservoirs and bridges, discharge of contaminated water into the river, the inflow of summer vacationers, and weir. Compared to our results there exists evidence that states a 36.1% reduction in occupancy within 10 years, in a small appearance range (7,820 km2) and occupancy area (288 km2), number of disconnected locations (19 locations), and a decline in habitat quality. Therefore, L. taczanowskii is now considered as Vulnerable (VU) based on the results (VU A2ac, Near meets B1b (i, ii, iii)+B2b (i, ii, iii)) of IUCN Red List categories and criteria. Lastly, the conservation plan of Ladislabia taczanowskii was discussed.

  • The five-story stone pagoda in Tamni-ri located in Uiseong County in Gyeongsangbuk-do had an unstable upper structure, and the structural deformation of the foundation stone and the stylobate was severe. In order to repair the base of the pagoda, it must be confirmed if there are support stones inside the base. Resistivity survey was performed to study the inner base stone structure during the repair work. The stylobate was exposed soil and broken stones after removing the walls and the cover of the stylobate. Modified pole-dipole array II was used for the resistivity survey, and compared with the typical pole-dipole array method. And in this study, a physical scale-down model experiment was performed to compare and analyze distortions caused by severe topographical undulations such as right-angled lines. The results show that the stylobate of Five-story Stone Pagoda in Tamni-ri Uiseong has base stones inside the reinforced filling soil and are located beneath the pillar of the body and supporting the pagoda.

  • The distribution aspect and extinction threat evaluation of the endangered species, Cottus hangiongensis were investigated from 2011 to 2017 in Korea for this study. The distribution reports of C. hangiongensis were divided into 1954~1985, 1981~2003, 2004~2012, and 2011~2017. The number of habited streams decreased gradually to 30, 24, 10, and 19 streams, respectively. In this study (2011~2017), C. hangiongensis was newly found in two streams (Ayajincheon and Chuksancheon), but 15 streams that appeared in the past are not in this study. The main habitat of C. hangiongensis was the downstream riffle of clean water with fast velocity and cobble-boulder bottoms. Given this evidence as noted for more than a 30% reduction in population after 2003, due to construction wear, river work and the qualitative decline of the habitat, C. hangiongensis is now considered to be Vulnerable (VU A2ac) based on the IUCN Red List categories and criteria.

  • The landfill ground that consists of sandy soil or contains boulder or has waste ground such as waste landfill can be often applied by dynamic compaction method considering quick construction and economic advantages. In this study, the improvement efficiency of the dynamic compaction method that is used on the waste disposal ground of Tague Freight Terminal constrution site is analyzed. The results show that the N values are increased from 6.5/30 to 22.5/30, which is 3.5 times increase compared with the N value before dynamic compaction. The amount of settlement is in the range of 0.706~1.729m. the $\alpha$ vlues suggested by Leonards et al.(1980) was about 0.25~0.48, which are quite similar to to not only 0.3~0.5 of the findings of waste layer of the Society of Soil Engineering of Japan (1987) but also 0.35~0.4 of that of mine waste of Lukas (1986).

  • In construction field, million tons of demolished concrete are produced in korea. It is urgently needed that they are used as recycled materials in order to prevent environment pollution and gain economic profits. However, existing recycling methods of demolished concrete have their limits for wide application. They have been only focused on the burying and banking. Therefore, in this paper, physical and mechanical properties of planting concrete using construction wastes for aggregates are described in order to investigate the validities of demolished concrete as recycled aggregates. The Properties of strength and durability are tested. According to the experimental results, compressive strength and freeze-thaw resistance of planting concrete using recycled aggregates shows worse performance than those using crushed stone concrete. But, it shows positive performance on the absorption ratio and thermal conductivity. Especially, considering the side of recycling of concrete wastes, it is recommended that recycled aggregates made with construction wastes is applied to planting concrete.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of fish communities and inhabiting status of endangered species in the Bukcheon (Stream) of Seoraksan National Park, Korea from April to September 2020. A total of 4,356 fish of 7 families and 22 species were collected from 17 survey stations during the survey period. The dominant species was Zacco koreanus (relative abundance, 41.8%), and subdominant species was Rhynchocypris kumgangensis (relative abundance, 15.1%), followed by Pungtungia herzi (10.1%), Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa (5.0%), Coreoleuciscus splendidus (4.1%), Zacco platypus (3.8%), Microphysogobio longidorsalis (3.5%), and Hemibarbus mylodon (2.2%). Among the fish species collected, 14 species (63.6%) were identified as Korean endemic species. There was one natural monument species (Hemibarbus mylodon), and four species of class II endangered wildlife that were designated by the Ministry of Environment (Acheilognathus signifer, Pseudopungtungi tenuicorpa, Gobiobotia brevibarba, and Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis). Among the four species of class II endangered wildlife, B. lenok tsinlingensis inhabited in the upper stream, and A. signifer, P. tenuicorpa and G. brevibarba inhabited mainly in the middle-lower stream. Also, P. tenuicorpa, H. mylodon, and B. lenok tsinlingensis were inhabited in large numbers. Additionally, two cold-water fish species (R. kumgangensis and B. lenok tsinlingensis) and one landlocked species (B. lenok tsinlingensis) were collected. According to the results of cluster analysis, the dominance index decreased from upstream to downstream, but the diversity, evenness, and richness index increased; the cluster structure was divided into the uppermost, upstream, midstream, and downstream. The water quality of Bukcheon was evaluated as good overall since the river health (index of biological integrity) evaluated using fish was evaluated as very good (11 stations), good (2 stations), and normal (4 stations). However, river repair work was being carried out in some areas and some wastewater was flowing in from the midstream, therefore, supplementary measures to preserve fish habitats are required.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of limited methods, economics and breeding appropriateness of native and imported ground cover plants in the methodology of a shallow soil rooftop garden. The new shallow soil rooftop gardening method uses a total of 13cm in soil thickness, including 4.5cm of top soil on a 7.5cm rock-wool-mat stacked onto a 1cm roll-type-draining plate. The total construction cost for each method of soil level within the design price standard for SEDUM BLOCK is 89,433won/$m^2$, and for DAKU is 92,550won/$m^2$. By comparing those two methods, the construction cost of the shallow soil artificial foundation methodology is 45,000won/$m^2$; this shows the new method is 50% less expensive than the existing method of shallow soil rooftop gardening. The experiment was executed on the rooftop of the Korean National Housing Corporation to ensure validity of the shallow soil artificial foundation planting, and the sample plants which were imported and grown now in native covering. A list investigating the growing plants was made of the cover rate in each plant class, both while alive and the dry plant weight. The native ground cover plants, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum middendorffianum, Allium senescens, Sedum sarmentosum, Aquilegia buergariana, and Caryopteris incana increased the cover rate, live weight and dry weight in the shallow soil artificial foundation method. Among the imported cover plants, Sedum sprium and Sedum reflexum, the cover rate increased and growth conditions improved. However, some species needed weed maintenance. After examination with the less expensive shallow soil artificial foundation method and growth analysis, it was found that rooftop gardens are a low-cost option and the growth of plants is great. This result shows the new method can contribute to the proliferation of rooftop gardens in urban settings.
