Education for Readers' Advisory in Library and Information Science Programs (독자상담을 위한 사서교육에 관한 연구)

  • This study discussed the roles of librarians in readers' advisory services and the education for readers' advisory services in LIS programs. For this, literatures were reviewed and readers' advisory courses provided by LIS programs of North America were investigated. And then the characteristics and contents of readers' advisory courses were analyzed. Based on the analysis, I suggested the education for readers' advisory services in LIS programs of Korea.

Bibliotherapy as an 'Therapuetic' Enforced Readers' Advisory and the Roles of a Librarian as a Therapist ('치료적' 독자상담으로서의 독서치료와 사서의 역할)

  • This article intends to locate the logical basis to apply bibliotherapy as a library service in Korean libraries. To the end, investigated and discussed are the historical relationship between bibliotherapy and RAS(readers' advisory service), and the theoretical base and practical experiences that enabled bibliotherapy to be practical in the U.S. library community. This article introduces a concept of 'therapeutic' RAS as a similar concept to 'developmental' bibliotherapy, and suggests the roles of a librarian as a therapist, based on the "Zones of Intervention" by Carol Kuhlthau.

Theoretical Foundations and a Conceptual Model of Therapeutic Readers' Advisory Services (치료적 독자상담의 이론적 근거와 개념적 모형에 관한 연구)

  • The purposes of this research are to search and analyze information theories which are useful to approach bibliotherapy in terms of 'therapeutic' readers' advisory service, and to propose a conceptual model of 'therapeutic' readers' advisory service on the basis of such theoretical foundations. To the end, Dervin's sense-making theory and Kuhlthau's ISP model are introduced and applied to the conceptual model. The conceptual model is profoundly based on Dervin's situation-gap-use metaphor and Kuhlthau's Uncertainty Principle.

An Analysis of Online Readers' Advisory Services Offered by Public Libraries (공공도서관의 온라인 독자상담 서비스에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the rapid advancement of information technology and changes in the reading environment, the readers' advisory services provided by public libraries are facing challenges and opportunities. Recognizing the need for public libraries to respond and propel their services forward, this study analyzed the current status of online readers' advisory services offered by public libraries in Korea and discusses areas that require improvement. To achieve this, the study analyzed the online readers' advisory services in 50 public libraries located in Seoul and six metropolitan cities (Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, Busan, and Ulsan) across seven categories. These categories encompass various aspects, such as announcing reading programs and new books, identifying and addressing reader needs, developing content by librarians, generating content by readers, providing guidance on external reading information, connecting with professional book review databases and online websites, and utilizing social media services. Through this analysis, the study identified areas for improvement to enhance online readers' advisory services in public libraries and ultimately improve reader satisfaction. It suggested enhancing activities such as librarians' book recommendations and reviews for individual readers, reader participation, and interaction.

Readers' Advisory and Bibliotherapy in Korean Library Community (한국 도서관계에서 독자상담과 독서치료의 의미)

  • This article intends to discuss about the strategies and methods that the Korean library community should follow to make the ongoing experiment of 'bibliotherapy program' be successful, and eventually, settle up as a regular library service program. The main focus of discussion was on figuring out both theoretical foundations and historical roots that can justify such an experiment in Korean libraries. To the end, a comparative analysis to Readers' Advisory Services was conducted, and also done for comparing the special features in Korean libraries with those of American libraries, especially as related to library services to readers. The final suggestion includes the tasks that Korean LIS scholars should undertake to make the ongoing bibliotherapy experiment become an indigenous Korean model for library services.

A Study on the Trends and Characteristics of Mental Health Services in the Public Libraries of North America (북미 공공도서관계 정신건강 지원서비스의 경향과 특성)

  • This study discussed the trends and characteristics of mental health services in the public libraries of North America. To accomplish this, this study collected its data through literature surveys, observations and interviews with librarians within the Vancouver public library system. The results show that there were many cases in which patrons asked public libraries for information on their mental health problems and the public libraries helped the patrons cope with their problems. The public libraries' assistance programs for national tragedies and natural disasters were temporary services. On the other hand, public libraries were continuously advising and guiding patrons dealing with emotional and psychological problems through the readers' advisory and information services. Specifically, public libraries were actively assisting various sensitive issues that are generated in the development of children and youths(for example, adoption, divorce and separation, remarriage, family, friendship, disabilities, death, self-esteem, emotions, bulling, violence, abuse, suicide, illness, addiction, sexual health, youth pregnancy and so on). The key role of librarians under these circumstances was to guide and recommend appropriate books and professional institutions that help solve the problems.

Textmining-Based Analysis for Duty and Knowledge structure of Vocational Counseling Service Industry (텍스트마이닝 기법을 통한 직업상담서비스산업의 직무 및 지식구조 분석)

  • This study attempts to analyze the structure of the knowledge and duties of the vocational counseling service industry by using the text mining method and network analysis, which are methods of big data analysis. The subjects of the survey were vocational counseling, job placement and career change support, three fields in the unit elements of competence included in the National Competency Standards (NCS) which areproposed by the government. Although the analysis results of frequently used words showed that all three fields had independent duties, many were overlapping, such as counseling, examination, employment support, etc. for clients, job seekers, and others. The knowledge required by the employees of this field includes many new fields, such as start-up development, lifelong career consulting, job adaptation and culture conflict, besides the five subjects of vocational psychology, vocational counseling, labor market, job information, and law, which are included in the vocational counselor certification examination. Also, we suggested that the consultants adhere to emotional approaches, such as empathy, acceptance and attentiveness, and take a neutral stance. This study isvaluable in that it is the first attempt to objectively analyze the duties of the vocational counseling service field by big data analysis. In addition, it is also meaningful that we first confirmed the difference between the direction of government policy and the actual practice in the field.

A Study on the Visual Literacy for Picture Book Reviews (그림책 서평의 시각적 문식성에 관한 연구)

  • As a public institution, it is the duty and responsibility of a library to provide readers with information about books. To provide such information to readers, a librarian should have the ability to provide satisfactory consultation and advice. As interest in picture books grows, there is an increasing need for libraries and librarians to produce and release picture book reviews on a regular basis to inform readers of what makes a good picture book, and which among similar books should they choose. Other than summarizing the content of a picture book, a good picture book review should also provide additional information that will help readers understand the reviewed book such as the literary symbolism of a book's visual texts. To this end, a librarian is required to develop visual literacy, which would enable him/her to read into the deeper meaning of the images imbued with the writer's ideas and philosophy. In light of the above discussion, this study compares and analyzes two picture book versions of the story Little Red Riding Hood, with the purpose of helping librarians understand the visual texts that they need to refer to when writing picture book reviews.
