  • This study investigates the effect of urban and architectural forms on the microclimate in urban areas. It applies urban and architectural elements such as urban form and tissue and building form and characteristics as the main influences on the microclimate within urban area. Among the 23 Automated Weather Stations (AWS) installed within Seoul city by the Korea Meteorological Administration, 6 sites were selected for the analysis, based on their different urban and architectural characteristics, and actual measurements were conducted in August 2017 using individual AWS equipment. Also, the measurements of microclimate and urban and architectural elements within a 500m radius of the AWS measurement points were collected and analyzed. The result of the analysis shows that the microclimate elements, such as wind speed, solar radiation, and temperature, were affected by the direction of the streets, the width, depth, and height of the buildings, the topographic elevation and direction and the traffic volume. This study is expected to contribute to mitigating urban heat island effect and setting the foundation for sustainable cities through development of urban management methods and techniques including the relationship between built environment elements and microclimate.

  • The primary purpose of this paper is to prove a clear relationship among land use type, vegetation level and surface temperature. For this purpose, this paper presents series of spatial distribution maps of the three features obtained through the visual interpretation of digital images. The result of study tells us that the spatial distribution of the vegetation level is very similar with that of surface temperature. By analyzing the relationship between surface temperature and land use types, this study categorizes the eighteen urban land uses into 7-8 groups according to their average surface temperature. The Duncan test was conducted to categorize the land uses. The surface temperature of manufacturing related land use is the highest, semi-residential use is the next, non-residential land use is the next to the lowest, and the agricultural and forest land use is the lowest. This paper provides another strong evidence of the relationship by showing the regression result.

  • This study was conducted selecting 44 places with a block unit subject to urban area in Gangnam-gu, to analyze a temperature change according to land use and green structure. In this study, it was used the broad-wide urban temperature, supported by Landset TM and ETM+ satellite image 6scene(1999${\~}$2002). The result of the research, the land use pattern has slightly influence on a temperature change of urban area. The result from correlation analysis between temperature and the factors affected by land cover type, such as building-to-land ratio(A correlation coefficient is 0.368${\~}$0.709) have positive correlation and green area ratio(a correlation coefficient is -0.551${\~}$-0.860) have negative correlation. The result from correlation analysis between temperature and green capacity of the land, crown projection area ratio, each factor have negative correlation with temperature, as showing that a correlation coefficient of green capacity of the land is -0.577(June 2006)${\~}$-0.882(June 1999) and crown projection area ratio's is -0.549(June 2001)${\~}$-0.817(June 1999). The result of the regression analysis for establishing urban area temperature change prediction model showed that green capacity of the land of the explanation variable was accepted.

  • The Construction policy of government ever since 1970s have brought the economical growth, but has been causing environmental problems. Most roads were paved either asphalt concrete or portland cement concrete. These types of pavements has caused to rise temperature by making local heat islands in urban during summer time. Recently the wet-mixing solidified soil pavement, a kind of soil-cement, has developed and has been applied to the environment-oriented pavement. The solidified soil wet-mixed is placed on the subgrade along with asphalt concrete and portland cement concrete. Thermistors are laid in these field test pavements. The temperature gradients of these pavements are automatically measured with time. As the results of this test, the equation estimating surface temperature of pavement is proposed by analyzing measured temperature data. It is shown that the temperature change within the surface layer due to the change of air temperature is the greatest in the asphalt mixture and the least in the solidified soil mixture. Since it is proven that this wet-mixing solidified soil pavement emit less radiant heat than other existed pavements. Therefore this type of pavement can be successfully applied to the roads, such as walks, parkways, and bikeways, which are required to be human-friendly and environment-oriented.

  • A three-dimensional numerical mesoscale model by Pielke's estimation (University of Virginia Mesoscale Model, UVMM) was applied to investigate the effects of land characteristics including land-humidity, land-roughness and land-albedo on some micro-climatic coefficients and the air cooling capacity. The results indicated that land-characteristics exposed a significant effect on air cooling. Air cooling effects between in urban and agricultural areas were compared and the effects were much higher in agricultural area. Air cooling effects of weed species were different and when converted into economic values by diesel oil price the effects were ranged from 411 to 816 Won/plant.
