Moral Turn in Geography Education: Moral Concepts, Skills, Values/Virtues (지리교육에서의 도덕적 전환 -도덕적 개념, 기능, 가치/덕목-)

  • This paper is to examine the interrelationship between morality (or ethics) and geography and education in terms of the moral and ethical dimension embedded moral turn in geography. Since the 1970s, the geography have morally turned with stressing realization of social relevance and justice through interest on moral issues such as the spatial inequality and human welfare in the world of difference. This moral turn in geography has formed the area of moral geography, and emphasized the ethics of care and responsibility of human and nature with warning of immoral geographies of others and nature in the world of difference with the recent trend of postmodernism. For morally careful geography teaching, it is now good time that geography educators need to think the moral turn in geography education. If geography education is willing to contribute to make a better world, it needs to reflect more morally on geography curriculum and instruction in terms of the ethics of care and responsibility.

A Study on the Justification of Moral Responsibility in Hybrid Warfare: Focused on a Critical Evaluation of Jus In Bello (하이브리드 전쟁에서 도덕적 책임의 정당화에 관한연구: Jus In Bello에 대한 비판적 고찰을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the aspects of hybrid warfare and show the limits of jus in bello, a principle that evaluates the moral responsibility of the agents. As a theory of the morality of war presented in traditional warfare, the just war theory has been widely accepted. In particular, jus in bello offers the criteria of moral legitimacy regarding the actions of individuals participating in or involved in war. However, hybrid warfare, in which various aspects of warfare operate in a complex way, has obvious differences compared to traditional warfare, and this difference causes difficulties in determining the moral evaluation and attribution of responsibility for actions in war. In order to appropriately resolve the moral problems arising from hybrid warfare, it is necessary to clarify what the limitations of existing moral justification theories are. To this end, in this paper, we will first present a conceptual understanding of hybrid warfare, specify the differences from traditional warfare, and then show the limits of its application in hybrid warfare in light of the three principles that compose jus in bello.

Is Mr. AI more responsible? The effect of anthropomorphism in the moral judgement toward AI's decision making (AI의 의사결정에 대한 도덕판단에서 의인화가 미치는 영향 - 쌍 도덕 이론을 중심으로 -)

  • As artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances, the number of cases in which AI becomes an object or subject of moral judgment is increasing, and this trend is expected to accelerate. Although the area of AI in human society expands, relatively few studies have been conducted on how people perceive and respond to AI. Three studies examined the effect of the anthropomorphism of AI on its responsibility. We predicted that anthropomorphism would increase the responsibility perception, and perceived agency and perceived patiency for AI would mediate this effect. Although the manipulation was not effective, multiple analyses confirmed the indirect effect of perceived patiency. In contrast, the effect of perceived agency of AI was somewhat mixed, which makes the hypothesis partially supported by the overall result. This result shows that for the moral status of artificial agents, perceived patiency is relatively more critical than perceived agency. These results support the organic perspective on the moral status that argues the importance of patiency, and show that patiency is more important than agency in the anthropomorphism related study of AI and robots.

Asymmetric Bias of the Ferry Sewol Accident News Frame Discriminatory Aspects and Interpretive of Media (세월호 사고 뉴스 프레임의 비대칭적 편향성 언론의 차별적 관점과 해석 방식)

In particular, this study confirmed theoretically how domestic media biased frame when it presents problem definition, causing interpretation, moral evaluation, and post-prescription on the ferry Sewol accident, In addition, the bias of the frame was analyzed comparing what is the difference between the conservative newspapers and liberal newspapers. Findings are as follows. First, in diagnosis of ferry Sewol accident, news slanted fragmentation frame>personalization frame>authority-disorder frame. The Chosun Ilbo focus on fragmentation bias, meanwhile Hankyoreh focus on the authority disorder relatively. Second, in accident evaluation, responsibility frame> moral frame> problem-solution frame. The Chosun Ilbo focus on responsibility frame and moral frame. But Hankyoreh focus on responsibility frame and problem-solution frame. Third, in the matter of responsibility, government frame>personal frame>organizational frame. Chosun Ilbo biased responsibility of the government and individuals, while the Hankyoreh is relatively more emphasis on government responsibility and the responsibility of the organization also showed. Fourth, in problem solving, thematic frame and episodic frame bias appeared as rough and level. Chosun Ilbo showed episodic frame, Hankyoreh showed thematic frame. News frame and bias as well as ideological differences of media on ferry Sewol accident was discussed in the context of the social dimension.

Artifacts and Conditions for Attribution of Responsibility (인공물과 책임귀속 조건)

  • What are the conditions make a being x a moral agent? Can an artifact be moral agent? A moral agent is considered to be a rational being capable of distinguishing between right and wrong. This study critically analyzed Davidson's position on the condition of the rational being and argued that the network of beliefs with propositional attitude and the beliefs as their background cannot be a requisite for the rational being. Later, it proves that the conditions proposed by $Proke{\check{s}}ov{\acute{a}}$ are merely paratactically listed superficial elements. The moral agent in this study includes the rational agent and it is proven that the strong first person viewpoint is the necessary and sufficient condition for rational agent and moral agent. In conclusion, it suggested a the sketch of moderate skepticism which sets the tentative limit on the agent potential in an artifact by suggesting conditions for moral agent instead of intense skepticism that strongly denies the potential as the moral agent.

  • In an increasingly hyperconnected battlefield, the reliance on battlefield networks and AI-based autonomous weapons systems creates uncertainty and raises ethical concerns. This article explores the responsibility gap in operating autonomous weapons systems, using Robert Sparrow's theory. By analyzing Sparrow's arguments, we propose overcoming the responsibility gap in lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS). Our objective is to establish a framework of responsibility that aligns with the evolving battlefield, promoting the development and use of responsible weapon systems.

  • This study investigates the history of economics for answering how the discipline originating from a sub-discipline of moral philosophy ended up being an amoral science. I show that economic theory, at its first stage of development, has retained a place in which morality could play a role within liberalist framework, but has removed the very place as it developed into its current image. I argue that it is the Walrasian paradigm that completed this amoralizing process in economics. One theoretical assumption of complete contract in the Walrasian paradigm, creates the institutional environment where economic agents are free from any moral consideration. I show that if the assumption is relaxed, the problem of economic agents' morality should reappear in the stage. Accepting the assumption of incomplete contract opens a way to restore the room for economic agents' moral considerations in economic discourses. Finally I breifly survey the recent discussions on the role of sympathy in economics.

Ethical Event of Responsibility in Nietzsche's Philosophy (니체철학에서 책임의 문제)

  • The notion of responsibility, which has now gained a firm foothold as one of the fundamental notions of philosophy and its neighboring disciplines, became the subject of philosophical enquiry only in the 19th century by Kierkegaard, who delved into the morality of critical self-awareness in ethical responsibility of the absolute self; and Nietzsche, who put emphasis on the responsibility of the sovereign self in coping with the problems of the future. Nietzsche is the first philosopher who took issue with the diminishment (Verkleinerung) of humanity-what he called human being's greatest disease-that swept Europe at that time. Concerns about Europe's future were the key movens of Nietzsche's philosophy revolving around the advent of nihilism in Europe and its solutions. He prepared alternative solutions in deep awareness that the ethics of good and evil firmly rooted in the traditional metaphysics and Christianity would not even catch the depth and breadth of the big problem of globalization brought about by modernism, let alone solve it. Nietzsche devoted his whole life to disseminating the knowledge that the future of humankind depends on removing these old ethics. This article traces Nietzsche's reflections on the ethical event of responsibility and provides an overview of the purview and scope contained in the meaning covered by the notion of responsibility in his philosophy beyond common norms and values.
