  • A study on sedimentation, geochemical behavior and seismic stratigrapht of the continental shelf sediments along the Korea Strait and a part of south and southeast offshore area of the Korea Peninsula was carried out. In the inner shelf floor with depth ranging up to 80m zonal distribution patterns of mud, sandy silt, and silty sand were observed. In the outer shelf, however, coarse sandy sediments are dominant, and shills and gravels were frequently observed. These observations seem to confirm the Holocene sedimentary processes on the continental shelves off the south, south to east coasts of Korea discussed by Park (1985 and 1986) and Park and Choi (1986). The suface sediments (upper most 5cm thick)from selected 9 stations were analyzed for Al,Mn, Fe,Cr,Ni,Cu,Zn and Pb in order to study geochemical behavior of the sediments in the study area. All data were normalized to Al to com, pensate the size effect of the sediments. In general, inner shelf sediments show slight enrichment compared to the outer shelf sediments. In particular,Pb and Zn show heavy enrichment in most of the sediments.to degrees comparable to those observed at the polluted Kwangyang and Masan Bay sediments. Thus,it is considered that rapid migration or movement of fine-grained sediments in the study area does exist. Three seismic stratigraphic units were analyzed based on the seismic records. The acoustic basement the lower sedimentary deposit(B)and the upper deposit(A)were observed. The strong reflectivity R,in particular, between unit A and B is considered to be an erosinal unconformity during the last Glacial time.

  • In order to estimate the variability of the wave propagation loss (PL) du e to hourly variations of the sound speed profiles (SSPs), we conducted oceanographic measurements every hour for 39 hours in October 1993 in the Korea Strait. Currents and meteorological data were measured simultaneously to examine the causes of the temporal variations of temperatures. During the experiment, the temporal variations of temperatures in the surface layer highly depend on the water mass transport from adjacent seas. The PL for low frequency (75-300 Hz) is calculated using the parabolic equation scheme and averaged over the whole water depth. The hourly variation of the SSP may cause a PL difference of up to 10 dB over a 30-50 km range. The variability of PL, represented by standard deviation for the 39 SSPs, is as large as 3 dB over a 50 km range.

  • Bedform morphology of the giant ripples have been studied on the continental shelf of the Yellow Sea, East China sea and Korea-Tsushima Strait on the basis of side-scan sonar image, sub-bottom profile, sedimentary facies, geomorphology evidence and hydrology. There are well developed giant ripples ranging from 100 to 500 m in wavelengths and from 2 to 10 m in wave height at nine sites in the study area, which are covered by medium to fine sand. Most of them have been formed under the present hydrologic regime where the tidal currents and local currents or turbulence flows are superimposed. In the study area, giant ripples are produced on two different environments. One is at the geomorphic narrow zone such as the Korea Strait where currents are accelerated by the topographic effects, while the other is the sandy flat plain where tidal currents and local currents are harmonized.

  • Interpretation of high-resolution seismic profiles collected from the inner shetf of the Korea Strait reveals that the shelf sequence in this area consists of three sedimentary units (I, II, and III in a descending order) formed after the last glacial maximum. Lower two units (II and III) represent the transgressive systems tract formed during the Holocene transgression, Unit III above the sequence boundary is interpreted to be the transgressive estuarine deposit, whereas Unit ll above the ravinement surface forms a thin transgressive sand which consists of the sediment produced through shoreface erosion and winnowing during the transgression. Unit I above the maximum flooding surface is the highstand systems tract consisting mainly of recent muds derived from the Nakdong River.

  • A study on the larval fish assemblage around the front area was conducted in the Korea Strait in August, 1993. The front was found in the shelf break located in $35{\sim}36^{\circ}N$. A total of 125 species were found in the study area. Of these Engraulis japonicus was the most dominant species comprising 84.3% of the total fish larvae collected and followed by Maurolicus muelleri accounting for 7.7%. Gobiidae, Callionymidae and Pomacentridae showed higher frequency of occurrence. These five species can be divided into three groups. First group was comprised in the larval fish species such as E. japonicus and Callionymidae which were found in the whole study area. The second group was comprised of Gobiidae and Pomacentridae which were found in the warm area located in the southern part of the front area. The other species was M. muelleri found in the cold area located in the northern part of the front area including the front area. The assemblage, geological distribution and body length composition of the fish larvae in the Korea Strait would be mainly determined by the spawning ecology of the fishes, and the geological distribution and structure of the front which is formed in the ocean boundary between the Tsushima Current and the East Sea Cold Water.

  • Dissolved aliphatic hydrocarbon concentrations in the surface seawater were investigated to describe their distribution and elucidate their sources in the Cheju-Korea Straits region (33$^{\circ}$30‘-34$^{\circ}$N 125$^{\circ}$-128$^{\circ}$E). Seawater sampling was made in spring and autumn in 1998. A large temporal and spatial variability were observed in the dissolved hydrocarbon concentrations in the region. The sources of dissolved hydrocarbons in seawater were elucidated based on the molecular concentrations of n-alkanes and pristane. Dissolved hydrocarbons in the surface water appears to be largely originated from phytoplankton and petroleum in the southern Yellow Sea (125$^{\circ}$), and terrigenous and petrogenic in the Cheju-Korea Straits region in April 1998. In September 1998, dissolved hydrocarbons in the surface waters were largely derived from phytoplanktons and terrestrial material in the Cheju-Korea Soaits region.

  • The ascidians specimens were collected from Tangsa and its adjacent waters in Korea by scuba divers during the period from 1994 to 1999. They were identified into 30 species which are reported for the first time in Tangsa. Out of them one species, Molgula hozawai, was turned out to be new to the Korean fauna, and six species, such as Eudistoma illotum, Symplegma connectans, Boltenia trasversaria, Microcosmus nultitentaculatus, Pyura squamata and Molgula hozawai, were newly recorded in Chundo Island and Geojedo Island, which are influenced by warm waters of the Kuroshio Current.

  • Hydrography of the Korea Strait was influenced by the various water masses such as Korean coastal water, East Sea cold water, and Tsushima Current. Anchovy larvae were frequently found in the area influenced by the Tsushima Current. Anchovy appeared in all seasons and were most abundant in summer. Anchovy was more abundant in the middle layer(30~70m) than the surface layer in spring and summer and was little in the deeper layer beyond the depth of 100m. It was most abundant in the surface layer in autumn, and decreased toward the deeper layer. They were more abundant in the middle layer(30~50m) than in the surface layer and the bottom layer in winter. Anchovy was most abundant in the depth of 30m to 70m during the day time, however it was more abundant in the surface layer during the night time. Although vertical distribution patterns of abundance varied seasonally and diurnally, most of the larval anchovy distributed in the upper layer within the depth of 100m and in the upper layer above the thermocline in summer and autumn.
