  • A boy (Hellman dental age III B) with mandibular prognathism was treated by means of the labiolingual appliance and the chin cap. Following results were obtained; 1) Except the problem of development, most of treatment objectives were achieved after 8 months of active treatment. 2) The axial inclinations of upper and lower incisors were changed by the treatment. 3) The most notable change was the reduction of genial angle. 4) The patient has retained the good occlusal stability till after 18 months of retention.

  • Recent scientific findings on the perception of facial attractiveness coupled with technological advances in computer imaging make it possible to measure the facial characteristics that nay be associated with specific judgments of facial appearance. These new methods can be used to produce psychometric norms of facial attractiveness which potentially could supplement the conventional population norms or averages used currently in orthodontic treatment planning. It is hypothesized that consideration of psychometric norms will enhance doctor-patient communication and lead to greater patient satisfaction at the completion of orthodontic treatment.

  • A study of a sample of 81 Korean adolescents was taken to determine the degree of correlation between mandibular anterior teeth size and the size of the canines and premolars. The correlation between the total mesiodistal width of the mandibular permanent incisors and that of maxillary or mandibular canine and first and second premolars was found to be 0.53 and 0.58, respectively. Further , regression constants were determined in an attempt to estimate the buccal segments from the mandibular incisors.

  • A girl aged 18 years and 1 month, had a Angle's Class III malocclusion, characterized by .anterior crossbite, anterior crowding, and constriction from right lower 2nd premolar to right lower 2nd molar. This patient underwent sealing and (equation omitted) extraction, and multibanded system was placed. After 14 months, anterior crossbite and crowding was corrected, an bothdental arches were improved. After 6 months from debanding, band space disappeared and any relapse was not detected.

  • A patient (Hellman dental age IIIA) who had anterior cross bite due to functional factor was treated with activator. Following results were obtained: 1) Anterior cross bite was crorrected 3 months after the initial application of the appliance. 2) Comparing pretreatment records with posttreatment, the main effects were labioversion of upper incisors, increase of upper arch length and downward-backward rotation of the mandible. 3) There was no damage on teeth and periodontal tissues and the patient had normal occlusion 1 year after the treatment.

  • The author studied the open-bite of 16 males and 25 females aged 20-23 using profile cephalometric roentgenogram and compared with normal occlusion to determine the morphological pattern of open-bite. The following results are obtained. 1) Open-bite patients showed remarkable vertical development of jaws than normal occlusion. 2) Females indicated conspicuous characteristics than males in open-bite. 3) Anterior teeth disclosed low positions in open-bite patients. 4) Mandible revealed obvious morphological features than maxilla in open-bite patients.
