  • Using KRIVET's Graduates Economic Activities Survey for 2005, this article examines the relationship between university ranking and labor market outcome, with a focus on wage differentials existing between provincial and Seoul metropolitan area university graduates. According to the analysis results, the average monthly wage for provincial university graduates was 1,747.7 thousand Korean won, which is 11.5% lower than that for graduates of universities in the Seoul metropolitan area. School effects on individual wage were estimated to about 12.2% after applying Hierarchical Linear Model technique, which means that university explains only an insignificant part of the total variance in wage among graduates. After controlling for the selection bias, the ability difference between the two areas, by applying the Heckman type 2SLS wage function and Neumark wage differential decomposition technique, the wage gap resulting from the segregation was not identified. This implies that, to a significant extent, the wage gap between provincial and Seoul metropolitan university graduates is attributed to the difference in productivity among individual graduates, rather than to the wage segregation. Also, the estimated wage function by applying Quantile Regression technique indicates that there does not exist any significant wage segregation difference by wage quantile.

  • The complete genomic information of Microbacterium aurum KACC $15219^T$ (= IFO $15204^T$ = DSM $8600^T$) is described. The genome of M. aurum KACC $15219^T$ contains 3,096 protein coding genes and an average G+C content of 69.9% in its chromosome (3.42 Mbp). This strain can use various carbon sources for growth, including quinic acid. Quinic acid is used as a substrate for the synthesis of aromatic amino acids via the shikimate pathway which are useful in the industry. M. aurum KACC $15219^T$ will provide basis to improve our understanding of this organism and allow more efficient application of the strain to industry.

  • This paper deals with the formation and development of hierarchical ranking stmcture among universities in Korea and the nature of university education. As the growing number of university graduates have trouble with finding job opportunity, the development of skills and competency which are required for the labor market is becoming the most important role for universities. Finally, I proposed several policy suggestions to overcome negative aspect of hierarchical ranking structure of university.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the features of students moving to other areas for university education in entrance stage. 2018 K-NSSE data were analyzed, and Chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis were performed. As a result, many students in Seoul area moved to various areas, but students from local areas moved to Seoul area universities with low percentage. In addition, it was confirmed that there was a difference in socioeconomic background, high school type and academic achievement level, career maturity, and university commitment level among the students group moving from Seoul to the local and from the local to Seoul area. This study suggests that the government needs to provide systematic support to overcome the stratification structure of the university centered on Seoul and to secure diversity of student composition to improve the quality of education and contribute to regional development.

  • The genome sequence of various Flammulina species has recently been reported, thereby revealing a diverse genetic repertoire. In this study, we identified laccase genes and analyzed their structural characteristics in Flammulina elastica (F. elastica) genome. Through genome analysis and bioinformatics approaches, three laccase genes (Fe-lac1, -lac2, and -lac3) were identified, ranging from 1,548 to 1,602 bp in length. These genes contained a copper ion-binding region with ten histidine residues and one cysteine residue and a disulfide bond-forming region with four cysteine residues. Full-length cDNA sequencing analysis revealed that laccase genes contain 12 to 16 introns and signal peptides between 17 and 22 bp in the N-terminus. Structural characterization of the laccase genes identified in this study should help in better understanding the biomass decomposition of F. elastica.

  • This study was performed to find out the reasonable sexing methods In the chicken, obtain the basic information for the mechanisms related to chicken sexual differentiation and identify the genes which known to involved in chicken sex differentiation. The chromosome analysis of chicken embryonic fibroblast was a simple method to determine sex of chicken by means of Z and W chromosome identification. The bands of female chicken genomic DNA digested with Xho Ⅰ and Eco RI restriction endonuclease showed to be useful in direct sex determination and these repetitive sequences of Xho Ⅰ and Eco RI families were proposed to be very homologous in their sequences by colony hybridization analysis. Seven of 150 random primers were selected to amplify the W chromosome-specific band by using arbitrary primed PCR and three of them were useful to identify the sex of chicken. To identify the sex differentiation genes in the chicken, PCR for the amplification of ZFY and SRY sequences was performed. ZFY and SRY sequences were amplified successfully in the chicken genome, implying that chicken genome might have the sex-related conserved sequences similar to mammalian ones. The PCR products of ZFY amplification were the same in both sexes, suggesting that these sequences may be located on autosome or Z chromosome. The profile of PCR amplification for SRY sequences showed variation between sexes, but this result was not enough to specify whether the SRY gene in chicken is on the autosome or sex chromosome.

  • National competitiveness is related directly to the strength of educational competitiveness of universities. Seoul National University (SNU) has been taking efforts to improve its competitiveness in University education in variety of ways and the classroom assessment is one key example of those. The current classroom assessment system practiced at universities is being used to evaluate courses and professors in charge by the university administration or evaluation committee. The classroom assessment system is not intended to put students and professors as the subject of the evaluation. In this case, the evaluation is intended wrongfully to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement by assigning grades on the lectures. Instead, a proper classroom assessment system should be targeted to improve the quality of lectures by encouraging communication among professor and students in the classroom. In this study, it was intended to investigate a suitable classroom assessment system to enhance the effectiveness of education, not to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement. For this purpose, research has been carried out to investigate opinions of professors at SNU on the criteria of classroom assessment and to analyze the criteria of classroom assessment at other domestic universities in Korea. The inquiries for feedback on the lecture by the student in the class was analyzed. The current classroom assessment system at SNU was reviewed and an improvement plan was devised to evaluate liberal art courses of engineering and science schools at SNU. In this research, the problems in the classroom assessment system was reviewed and improvement points were searched to utilize the classroom assessment system more effectively for the improvement of lecture quality.

  • One of the most lasting and influential projects for radical reform of Korean universities is a discourse on networking national and public universities. The discourse, proposed with a level equalization of universities as its ideological basis has raised various discussions and suggestions in the past 20 years. It was proposed as a fundamental solution to the 'disastrous' hierarchical structure of universities and 'hellish' entrance exam competition. This paper aims at reexamining the efficacy of its ideological proposition and its practicability at the present time in reference to such foreign cases, which have worked as model cases for this discourse: the reformation of the University of Paris and the California master plan for higher education in the 1960s. The two different contexts, however, should be considered in applying the cases to Korean university reform. 1) The foreign cases of united universities were formed 'naturally' in the expanding phases of higher education while the Korean project pursued 'artificially' in the midst of reconstructing process. 2) The foreign cases had an overall influence on education in general as most of the universities in those countries were public or national, while the effect of Korean project will be very limited as most of the university students attend private universities. Besides those differences, the new situations surrounding universities such as globalized competitiveness and technological innovation is making the idea of standardization of universities obsolete. Korean university reform should not be centered on the integration of universities but on their characterization and enhance the specific strengths of each group of universities.
