  • Most of the university libraries in Korea provide digital reference service(DRS), but the use of DRS is very low. The low usage of DRS seems to result from the lack of subject librarians, of staff, of public relations, and of managers' enthusiastic attitude and understanding of DRS. It is difficult to solve these problems because of the poor circumstances in universities. The collaborative digital reference service(CDRS) is a solution to these problems. Not only CDRS costs little but also can provide reference services in many different subject areas. Though subject specialist librarian, user-friendly system interface, system programs and administrative supports are necessary to implement CDRS, the education and training of the subject specialist librarians is the most important work to be done in the university library situation in Korea.

  • It has been demonstrated through previous demand analysis that the subject-oriented service system in university libraries are in higher demand than the function-oriented system. Despite of the increasing number of studies that prove cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency of the subject-oriented library service, there are virtually no university libraries in Korea that fully operate subject-oriented service. This study aims to propose a set of practical guidelines for university libraries to introduce subject-oriented service in the midst of many existing constraints, namely staff shortage. The study describes responsibilities of subject specialist librarians and analyzes best practices of subject-oriented service. Also it shows current standing of university libraries of difference size based on web site research of four-year university libraries.

  • This study aims to propose a set of guidelines for the development of university librarians' continuing education program. It examines previous academic literature regarding such programs both in Korea and overseas, as well as the present condition and demands of Korean university librarians. A survey was conducted by systematically sampling 33.3% of all university librarians nationwide and asking about their experiences with the existing continuing education program(e. g., general satisfaction level, program topics, program administration, evaluation methods, outreach methods, reasons for participation). The survey results show that the participants: (1) had a relatively low satisfaction level; (2) strongly demand programs focusing on library promotion, management of information resources and knowledge content, and skills to adiust to the rapidly changing library environment; (3) prefer a week-long course focused on specialized subjects and skill development; and (4) cite more specialized education content, the establishment of a support system, and diversified education levels as factors that would further their interest in the continuing education program.
