  • Public transportation ridership and walkability of urban district can be enhanced through high quality of TOD(Transit Oriented Development) elements. Generally, TOD have been evaluated several physical components such as the diversity of land use pattern, accessibility of public transportation and aspects of urban design around the station area. Especially, Spatial characteristics of TOD planning elements have many potential dependent when considering the characteristics of Rail Station-Influenced Area Development which is performing around subway station. Therefore, researchers should be considering the variation of spatial properties for planning elements according the set of spatial area and their socioeconomic factors. However, existing many cases related TOD does not consider about this point. In this paper, the changes of TOD characteristics were analyzed by different spatial units surrounding subway station in Busan Metropolitan City. Multiple Regression Analysis was performed for an investigation of effective spatial unit of TOD planning elements in this area using subway ridership data. In addition, the application validity of socioeconomic variables was examined through a comparative analysis of regression results with the multiple regression that implied only physical TOD elements. As the result, the variation of spatial properties for TOD planning elements according to the set of spatial unit was found. Furthermore, the specific spatial unit to applicable TOD elements in this area was derived. And the multiple regression model which added socioeconomic variables was derived more improved estimate results than the multiple regression model that implied only physical TOD elements.

  • The purpose of this study is to categorize subway station areas in Seoul by rail use characteristic. Most studies have categorized rail-oriented areas, based on land use patterns or/and urban spatial structure in Korea as well as the United States. However, the land use pattern of a subway station area tends to form by the real use of subway users since the latter plays an important role in forming the former. Therefore, the study is expected to contribute to the planning and policy of subway station areas in Seoul by analyzing characteristics of rail use. To achieve the purpose, the study uses a factor analysis for rail use, in terms of time of the day and day of the week. and then conducted a multidimensional scaling method to identify a relation of the real pattern to land use pattern. The results find that the Seoul subway station areas are categorized into residential, commercial and recreational, and office-centered ones. Furthermore, unlike the results of previous studies, the study identifies that many station areas have the mixed characteristics of economic activities. That is, they form more than a centered function such as residential and commercial, residential and office, commercial and office, residential, commercial and office. In addition, the study identifies that there is a close connection between rail use and land one. In short, identification of these mixed characteristics for subway station areas is expected to contribute to developing the planning and development method of TOD in Korea.

  • Recently, due to problems with subway and bus operations, a need has emerged for a solution such as the introduction of an Advanced Transit System. In several municipalities, systems have been introduced using light rail as AGT urban aesthetics construction. There is high inhibition and civil cases are delayed by more environmentally friendly and accessible remedies. For the purpose of this study, Changwon city would be transformed to have an environmentally friendly transportation system such as a tram with an overview. Features, advantages, and disadvantages are analyzed, and systems are established the existing public transport routes by transfer system. Changwon city's tram plan is first step in open in year 2018, and second step with the opening goal of the year 2021, and the total line length of 33.9 km, the station will be built in the 38 locations. and also in 2011 a feasibility study, evaluated a low economic as B/C to 0.88, but it evaluated the high value of the policy analysis as AHP to 0.502. However, introduction of a tram project that should precede the as following condition. The first step in Changwon city's tram plan would be as follows : The introduction of the tram system would demand traffic management along with a restructuring of the bus system, and the tram system would be selected for domestic realities. Secondly, the introduction of trams would comprehend the advanced traffic composition in accordance with the consensus of the citizenship, and a legal system should be established for the introduction of the trams.

  • The design principles of new urbanism (NU) have been adopted for new towns-in town projects for inner city neighborhoods in Seoul, Korea Since 2000. Here, ten NU principles were matched to four urban design categories: streets, land use, housing and buildings, and public open spaces. These elements were analyzed for Eunpyung New Town project. Through the case, the applications and implications NU principles are explored. The principles of connectivity, quality architecture and urban design, increased density, green transportation, sustainability, and quality of life were positively and successively adopted for streets, land use, housing and buildings, and public open spaces. The principles of mixed-use and diversity and traditional neighborhood structure were only partially applied in land use, housing and buildings, and public open spaces. It should be note that the walkability principle is intended not for job-housing proximity, but for pedestrian-friendly street design.

  • This study aims to identify the difference between the actual characteristics of urban station influence areas and the recognition of the importance of such characteristics in planning, by analyzing the importance of transit-oriented development (TOD) planning factors that influence the use of public transportation. In terms of the methodology for the assessment, this study gives in-depth discussions over the validity of assessment methods that utilize quantitative data and those that rely on qualitative surveys of experts. Based on such discussions, the study analyzes the importance of the actual characteristics of station influence areas (quantitative) and the characteristics in planning identified by experts (qualitative), thereby suggesting implications for the orientations for future development of station influence areas.

  • TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) is one of the urban structure concentrated on the multifunctional space/district with public transportation system, which is introduced for maintaining sustainable future cities. With such trends, the project of building complex transferring centers located at a urban railway station has widely been spreaded and a comprehensive and systematic analytical framework is required to clarify and readily understand the complicated procedure of estimation with the large scale of the project. By doing so, this study is to develop a comprehensive analytical framework for estimating a pedestrian OD matrix using a spatial information and an integrated smart card data, which is so called a data depository and it has been applied to the Samseong station for the model validation. The proposed analytical framework contributes on providing a chance to possibly extend with digitalized and automated data collection technologies and a BigData mining methods.

  • Existing model formula in the 4 phase model is limited in the estimation of the demand for urban railway because the administrative region-based formula reflects no spatial characteristics of station surrounding area(SSA) that urban railway forms. The purpose of this study is both to analyse the behavior in selecting the method regarding spatial range of SSA and to do the basic research for the development of new model through the survey conducted in the stations of the metropolitan area. This study will review the domestic and foreign cases about designation of SSA, study the spatial range of SSA through case studies, analyze the selection of methods by the spatial range and estimate the demand of the station on the basis of social and economic indices regarding SSA. This study focuses on the verification of real results and model estimates, due to the time constraint and lack of resources for collecting and analysing the data. According to this study, 500m,1000m division of SSA shows the closest results of the model estimates to the real demand of the targeted stations.

  • This study empirically analyses the spatial features of land use and transportation, and residential characteristics of the cases of the Sangin and Siji newly developed districts in Taegu. Before the development, the areas consisted mainly of rice paddies and fields; these areas are now filled with high-density residential complexes, with a proliferation of commerce and service functions. In Sangin, restaurants, retail services, bars and bakeries are the main developments, but Siji developed retail services, restaurants, private institutions for students, and facilities for convenience goods. While the public transportation system is oriented to CBD, the inter-districts transportation network is lacking. The residents are mainly in their 40s to 50s, with white collar jobs. They have a relatively high level of education with high income. They have migrated a relatively short distance to the district. The locational(pull) factors influencing the decision to migrate, for Sangin are transportation, the physical environment and access to the working place, but for Siji it has been the physical environment, the school group, and access to the working place. The main dissatisfaction factors for Sangin are the management fee, the school group and for Siji they are commuting, the management fee and transportation.
