  • A convective circulation box was redesigned after analyzing reasons why adolescent elementary school students could not derive a convective circulation concept from the convection circulation box experiments. Even though students were in the formal operational period of Piaget, the adolescents felt difficult to understand a concept of the natural phenomena they have never seen before. Thus, we designed a method to help students increase their scientific understandings about the concept through developing a miniature convective circulation box. Findings indicated that an application of redesigned convective circulation box in the classroom experiment significantly increased the students' understanding about the convective circulations of land and sea breezes, and as well as their participation in the activities. In addition, the redesigned convective circulation box motivated students to develop their scientific thinking skills by allowing them to decide where to put visible incenses inside the box and to directly observe the smoke currents circulation formed accordingly. Redesigning and using a convective circulationbox as a miniature of natural phenomenon helps students avoid having misconceptions. The biggest merits of the box are that it is observable in all directions, it provides much clearer convective circulations comparing to the extant box, and it requires low production costs.

Effect of Elementary Students' Understandings about Principle of Land and Sea Breeze Using Incense Smoke on the outside of Convection Current Box as a Scaffold in Convection Current Box Experiment (대류상자 밖의 향 연기 이동을 비계로 활용한 대류상자 실험이 초등학생들의 해륙풍의 원리 이해에 미치는 효과)

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the effect of a scaffold to help in understanding the principle of land and sea breeze through the convection current box experiment and to analyze the students' inference abilities and analogy abilities. For this purpose, the 60 elementary students who had not learned the principle of land and sea breeze were surveyed and analyzed. When using the scaffold to compare the movement of the incense smoke in the convection current box with that of the incense smoke on the outside of the convection current box, the rate of the students who correctly understood the principle of the land and sea breeze between the sea and the land was very low. The result shows that the scaffold used in this study do not help sufficiently in understanding the principle of the land and sea breeze through analogy and it is necessary to introduce a new scaffold for the elementary students to understand it.

  • experimental and computational studies ore carried out to investigate the natural convection of the single phase flow in a tank with a heated horizontal plate facing downward. This is a simplified model for investigations of the influence of a core melt at the bottom of a reactor vessel on the thermal hydraulic behavior in a oater filled cavity surrounding the vessel. In this case the vessel is simulated by a hexahedron insulated box with a heated plate Horizontally mounted at the bottom of the box. The box with the heated plate is installed in a water filled hexahedron tank. Coolers are immersed in the U-type water volume between the box and the tank. Although the multicomponent flows exist more probably below the heated plate in reality, present study concentrates on the single phase flow in a first step prior to investigating the complicated multicomponent thermal hydraulic phenomena. In the present study, in order to get a better understanding for the natural convection characteristics below the heated plate, the velocity and temperature are measured by LDA(Laser Doppler Anemometry) and thermocouples, respectively. And How fields are visualized by taking pictures of the How region with suspended particles. The results show the occurrence of a very effective circulation of the fluid in the whole How area as the heater and coolers are put into operation. In the remote region below the heated plate the new is nearly stagnant, and a remarkable temperature stratification can be observed with very thin thermal boundary. Analytical predictions using the FLUTAN code show a reasonable matching of the measured velocity fields.

  • A land and sea breeze and the cause of wind are learned through a convection current box experiment in elementary science class. The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary students' perception and inferring process about a land and sea breeze. For this purpose, the 159 elementary students who lived in J city were collected. The results of this study showed that the students who perceived correctly about a land and sea breeze and the cause of wind were only 45 persons(28.3%). And most of the students understood the direction of the wind as they observed in the experiment. That is, most of the students did not understand a direction of a land and sea breeze by a inferring process from the experimental result. They did not pass by a inferring process. These results demand that a new convection current box experimental set is to be developed, as well as the experimental instruction more focused on the inferring process, for the perception of a land and sea breeze and the cause of wind.

  • Culture is already deeply imbued in our lives. The furniture has become a way of life and the human became part of the culture. In this study, the aim is to explore the traditional furniture that is projected through the culture as a lifestyle. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the cultural implication in Korean traditional wooden furniture. Specific research questions in this study are as follows; 1) How to reflected house structure culture at traditional woodcraft furniture? 2) How to reflected interior space culture at traditional woodcraft furniture? 3) How to projected life form style culture at traditional woodcraft furniture? 4) How to harmonize between modern life culture and traditional woodcraft furniture? In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the literature of review was used masters of Korea's traditional woodcraft furniture. To collect information of Korean traditional furniture, the furniture was selected representative pieces of Korean Joseon Dynasty and interviewed an important intangible cultural asset somokjang. Based on the explore of Korean traditional furniture, the conclusions of this study are as follows; first, in the viewpoint of house framework culture, most of traditional furniture was made u sing a narrow interior space and was to be placed in close contact with the walls, and was developed as a type of molding on the front of the furniture to pursue beauty. Second, in the viewpoint of ondol culture, traditional furniture was closed to the wall by using low height furniture and furniture legs the structure punghyeol was used to reflect the phenomena of convective heat and humidity. Third, in the viewpoint of life form culture, traditional furniture was made that sat-down at eye level configuration is proportional to its size and height and appropriately been made. And patterns reflect the wishes of most things in nature and to be blessed with longevity origin were used in the decoration of wooden furniture. Finally, in the viewpoint of modern life culture, traditional furniture is simple but not dirty, and splendid but not luxurious. So although traditional wooden furniture are in any room or place, never discouraged by the dignity.
