  • The Single Species, Unreacted Flow Model which is effectively applicable on the computational analysis of rocket exhaust flow is introduced in this paper. The basic concept of this model had been originated from chemically frozen analysis of hot air but it was complemented by compensating molecular weight and specific heat which was obtained CEA code analysis of exhaust plume. Comparing single species, unreacted model with the finite chemistry model, unreacted model can reduce calculation time to 1/5 while it makes similar simulation results.

  • The wake effects behind wind turbines were investigated by using data from a Met Mast tower and the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system for a wind turbine. The results of the wake investigations and predicted values for the velocity deficit based on the eddy viscosity model were compared with the turbulence intensity from the Lange model. As a result, the velocity deficit and turbulence intensity of the wake increased as the free stream wind speed decreased. In addition, the magnitude of the velocity deficit for the center of the wake using the eddy viscosity model was overestimated while the turbulence intensity from the Lange model showed similarities with measured values.

  • In this study, the cooling of rocket exhaust plume by sprayed water inside plume were investigated as varying of sprayed water mass, location, and method using computational fluid analysis. For Analyze rocket exhaust plume, a single species unreacted analysis model based on the chemically frozen analysis was used and the discrete particle model which was a kind of Euler-Lagrangian analysis model was used for simulate sprayed water inside plume. It was confirmed that the temperature of plume was reduced without cooling when water mass was two times of plume mass through analysis results.

  • Multirotor configurations such as VTOL and urban air mobility have been focused on today due to the high maneuverability. Aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics of multirotor have much difference to those of a single rotor. In this study, a numerical analysis based on the free wake vortex lattice method is used for identifying the wake interaction effect. In order to compare the various configurations and operating conditions, the effects of the spacing between the rotors in hovering flight and the effects of the advancing ratio and the formation in forward flight are discussed. In the hovering flight, the unsteady loading of multirotor changes periodically and loading fluctuation increases as decreasing the spacing. It causes the variation in unsteady loading noise and the noise directivity pattern. In the forward flight, the difference in loading fluctuation and noise characteristics are observed according to the diamond and square formation of rotors. By comparing with results of single rotor analysis, multirotor configurations have different directivity pattern and amplitude of loading noise according to the location of each rotor. As a result, wake interaction effect becomes a highly important factor for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analysis according to multirotor configurations and operating conditions.

  • We carried out flow and structural response analysis of a box-type artificial reef (AR), which is made of concrete and structural steel. From the flow analysis, the wake region and drag coefficient were evaluated and accordingly, the structural analysis was performed to evaluate the stress and deformation of the target reef by considering the pressure field obtained from the flow analysis. The concept of wake volume was presented to quantitatively estimate the wake region and its variation according to flow direction and velocity. From the results, it is shown that the flow responses are only sensitive to the flow direction; the structural responses are sensitive to both of the flow velocity and direction although the magnitudes are negligible; and the wake volume became 3.52 times the AR volume with an optimum installation condition ($30^{\circ}$, flow direction) of the target unit.

  • The objective of this study is to develop and validate a numerical method which can handle the multi-rotor aerodynamic characteristics. For the purpose of power estimation, table look-up method is implemented to the existing unsteady panel code that is coupled with a time-marching free wake model. Also, the Reynolds number scaling is implemented for the application to various regions of Reynolds number. The computed results are validated against the available experimental data for coaxial and tandem rotors. In the validation case for the coaxial rotor, more accurate result is acquired when the thickness effect is considered. The wake instability problem occurs at a particular separation distance between the rotors for tandem rotors. The wake instability is avoided by setting the single-rotor wake geometry as the initial wake geometry for the multi-rotor analysis. The estimated result for rotor separation effect is compared with the result of the momentum theory.

  • In this paper, the aerodynamic performance prediction of a 30kW counter-rotating (C/R) wind turbine system has been made by using the momentum theory as well as the two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory with special care on the wake and the post-stall effects. In order to take into account the wake effects in the performance analysis, the wind tunnel test data obtained for a scaled blade are used. Both the axial and rotational inductions behind the auxiliary rotors are determined through the wake model. In addition, the optimum chord and twist distributions along the blades are obtained from the Glauert's optimum actuator disk model considering the Prandtl's tip loss effect. The performance results of the counter-rotating wind turbine system are compared with those of the conventional single rotor system and demonstrated the effectiveness of the counter-rotating wind turbine system.

  • To evaluate the hydraulic resistance behind bodies in a large scale grid numerical model, a drag stress term which is formulated by the drag force is introduced in the depth-integrated Reynolds equations. And also, the applicability and problems of this model are discussed through various numerical experiments where the analytical solutions exist. In the case of a single body, the error range of velocity difference between analytical and numerical solutions is within $\pm$10% and the wake width behind the body shows a good agreement with the analytical solution. When the drag coefficient and the eddy viscosity are precisely decided, the numerical solutions behind a row of bodies will be efficiently used in real situations.

  • The propulsive characteristics of oscillating flat plates are investigated using a discrete vortex method. The plates and their wakes are represented by discrete point vortices. To analyze the closely coupled aerodynamic interference between the plates, a vortex core model and a vortex core addition scheme are combined. A calculated wake shape for a flat plate in heaving oscillation is compared with flow visualization. The effect of wake shapes on the propulsive characteristics of the plates in pitching oscillation is investigated. The propulsive characteristics of oscillating plates with three cases (1. one is stationary and another is oscillating, 2. both oscillating in phase, 3. both oscillating out of phase) are calculated. The plates oscillating out of phase showed the largest thrust force among the three cases.

  • The wake-induced vibration and proximity-induced vibration of two interfering circular cylinders in tandem are investigated experimentally, using an elastically supported cylinder and a fixed cylinder in uniform crossflow. Dynamic responses and flow periodicity in wake are measured to investigate the effect of system parameters on aerodynamic instability. The parameters include the free stream wind velocity and the position of two interfering circular cylinders. The oscillating behavior of the amplitude of the elastically supported cylinder is changed by varying the position, the relative gap spacing between two interfering circular cylinders and the reduced velocities. In small gap spacing between the elastically supported cylinder located to upstream and the circular cylinder fixed to downstream, the fluidelastic instability is founded. The vibration amplitude decreases notably as gap spacing between two interfering circular cylinders becomes large. The dynamic behavior at g/D-4.0 is similar to that of the single circular cylinder.
