Relationship between Thermal Insulation and the Combinations of Korean Women's Clothing by Season - Using a Thermal Manikin - (한국 성인 여성의 계절별 의복조합과 보온력과의 관련성 - 써멀마네킨 실험에 의한 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between the combination of women's clothing by season and thermal insulation using a thermal manikin. A total of 34 kinds of clothing ensembles were selected based on previous studies(8 types for spring/fall, 7 types for summer, and 19 types for winter). The results were as follows: The thermal insulation of clothing ensembles($I_{cle-total}$) ranged from $0.34{\sim}0.60clo$ for spring/fall, $0.16{\sim}0.37clo$ for summer, and $0.89{\sim}1.35clo$ for winter. The correlation coefficient between the thermal insulation of clothing ensembles and thermal insulation accumulated by the individual garments composing of the clothing ensembles($I_{cle-summed}$) was 0.982(p<0.001). The correlation coefficient between the thermal insulation of clothing ensembles and total clothing layers for the upper body part was 0.750 (p<0.001), for the total clothing weight was 0.978(p<0.001), and for the covering area was 0.776(p<0.001). In conclusion, $I_{cle-total}$ showed higher relationships to the $I_{cle-summed}$ and total clothing weight than to the total clothing layers or surface area covered by clothing.

The Relationship between Weight of Single Garments and Thermal Insulation with a Thermal Manikin (써멀마네킨을 이용한 단일의복의 중량과 보온력에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the weight of seasonal garments worn by Korean women in their daily lives and thermal insulation. We selected a total of 121 garments(13 kinds of Under garments, 51 Upper garments, 32 Lower garments, 15 Headgear, 10 Gloves Footgear) based on our previous survey using questionnaire and interview. Thermal insulation of single garment was measured with a thermal manikin. Also we measured garment weight, covering area, thickness, air permeability on the each garment(chamber air temperature: $21.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, humidity: $50{\pm}5%R.H.$ air speed: 0.15m/s). The results are as follow: The very strong positive correlation(r=0.905, p<.01) was recognized between the weight of single garment and thermal insulation. The regression equation of thermal insulation can be represented as follows: Thermal Insulation(clo)=$0.03+0.0004{\times}Garment$ Weight(g)($r^2$=0.820, SEE =0.059). There are significant differences in the thermal insulation and garment weight by season and garment type(p<.05). The each garment category's thermal insulation and garment weight has as follows: Under garment(0.06clo, 89g), Blouse Shirt T-shirt(0.13clo, 200g), Cardigan Sweater Vest(0.14clo, 287g), Coat Jacket Jumper(0.41clo, 890g), Skirt(0.16clo, 276g), Trousers(0.20clo, 438g), Headgear(0.03clo, 102g), Gloves Footgear(0.03clo, 33g).

A Study on Changes in Thermal Performances in Ensembles Made up of Single Garments Marketed for Korean Men - In Still and Dynamic Air Conditions - (한국 남성용 단일의복의 앙상블 조합시의 온열특성 변화에 관한 연구 - 무풍, 풍속환경하에서 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the thermal characteristics of garments marketed for Korean males and to investigate the influence of each garment on ensemble, by measuring their insulation values(clo) using thermal manikins. The results are as follows. The total insulations(clo) of ensembles for S/S seasons are between 1.46 and 2.6 clo, with the mean of 2.12 clo. The insulation in the still air condition is 1.23 clo, which means a decrease of 42% compared to the total insulation of all the component garments. The insulation of ensembles for S/S seasons in the dynamic air condition decreased by 46.8%, compared to the still air condition. The total insulation(clo) of ensembles for F/W seasons is between 3.84 and 7.36 clo with the mean of 4.74 clo. The insulation in the still air condition is 2.26 clo, which means a decrease of 53.6% compared to the total insulation of all the component garments. The insulation of ensembles for F/W seasons in the dynamic air condition decreased by 36.2%, compared to the still air condition. As the clo value of each component garment gets higher, the insulation of ensembles gets higher. Especially, the insulation of ensembles was more influenced by outer wear than inner wear. The insulation of ensembles could be predicted by the insulation of outerwear better.

Quantification of Thermal Insulation by Clothing Items and Analysis of Influencing Factors (단일의복의 보온력 정량화와 영향 요인)

  • The purpose of the present study was to quantify the thermal insulation of garments by item and examine factors influencing clothing insulation. A total of 769 garments in clo unit were collected and classified into 12 categories: blouses/shirts (95 items, BS), T-shirts/sweaters (62 items, TS), vest (23 items, VT), cardigans (23 items, CD), jackets/coats (75 items, JC), sport outerwear (including padding jackets)(48 items, SO), trousers (23 items, TR), skirts (56 items, SK), dresses (28 items, DS), underwear (150 items, UW), sleepwear (50 items, SW), and personal protective clothing (59 items, PPC). The results showed that clothing insulation was $0.21{\pm}0.01clo$ for the BS, $0.22{\pm}0.01clo$ for TS, $0.12{\pm}0.00clo$ for VT, $0.23{\pm}0.02clo$ for CD, $0.40{\pm}0.02clo$ for JC, $0.49{\pm}0.03clo$ for SO, $0.21{\pm}0.01clo$ for TR, $0.18{\pm}0.01clo$ for SK, $0.34{\pm}0.03clo$ for DS, $0.09{\pm}0.01clo$ for UW, $0.42{\pm}0.03clo$ for SW, and $0.56{\pm}0.03clo$ for PPC (p<.001). The most influential factors among the seven factors for thermal insulation of garments were clothing weight and covering area; however, the explanatory powers of two factors differed according to clothing categories. The covering area had more significant impact on clothing insulation in cardigans, jackets/coats, trousers, and dresses than clothing weight. Covering areas and clothing weight were the most influential factors in the following categories: blouses/shirt, T-shirts/sweaters, skirts, sleepwear and personal protective clothing. The garment weight was the most important factor for thermal insulation for the sport outerwear.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors that might distinguish those who have a high level of Intention to purchase each of domestic, foreign designer and national brand jeans from those who have a low intention in terms of evaluative criteria belief, ideal jeans image and clothing altitude. The sample consisted of 198 male and 197 female students from five universities in Seoul. The questionnnaire consisted of 50 seven-point semantic differential scales dealing with evaluative criteria and ideal jeans image, beliefs about and intention to purchase domestic, foreign designer and foreign national brand jeans and 25 Likert type clothing attitude scales. Based on a series of t-tests the results showed that color and design were the most influencing factor among the evaluative criteria belief, regardless of brand type, while durability, accessory, sewing were the least. Sexy image, brand consciousnees and fashion interest were the important factor that distinguish high intention to purchase group fro)m low intention to purchase group.

ButtonKeyboard: A Button-shaped Keyboard Supporting Text entry for Wearable Devices (버튼 키보드: 웨어러블 기기에서 문자입력을 지원하는 단추형 키보드)

  • 웨어러블 컴퓨팅 환경에서 문자입력은 필수적인 태스크이나 적절한 유저 인터페이스를 지원하기란 쉽지 않다. 탁상용 QWERTY 키보드를 소형화하여 상용화한 제품도 있지만 일상에서 사용하기에는 상당히 부담스러운 크기이다. 본 연구는 단추와 유사한 크기로 부담 없이 의복에 부착할 수 있으며 적정 수준으로 문자입력 태스크를 지원할 수 있는 버튼 키보드를 제안한다. 버튼키보드는 기존 전화키패드의 $3{\times}3$ 키 배열을 단일 키 패드로 통합하였다. 이는 내구성 있고 간결한 폼팩터를 가능하게 하며 입력장치의 소형화와 문자입력효율의 향상을 가능하게 한다. 버튼키보드는 일반 키보드용 키에 터치센서와 LED 배열을 합성하여 구현하였다. 따라서 손가락의 위치에 따라 이격, 터치, 누름등의 상태를 구분할 수 있어 멀티탭핑방식에서 발생하는 입력분절문제를 해결하였으며 와이핑 모션에 의한 특수문자와 명령 입력을 가능하게 하였다. 프로토타입을 통해 문자입력수행도 테스트 결과 20세션 학습후 한손입력에 대해 평균 14.7WPM, 두손입력에 대해 평균 14.5WPM의 입력속도를 얻었다. 20세션 평균 에러율은 6%를 기록했으며 최고속도는 두손입력시 17WPM으로 나타났다. 실험결과를 통해 본 연구에서 제안한 버튼키보드가 기기를 극적으로 소형화하였음에도 불구하고 문자입력을 적정수준으로 수행할 수 있는 가능성을 가진 문자입력장치임을 확인할 수 있었다. 차후 프로토타입의 개선을 통하여 기기가 더욱 소형화될 수 있으며 문자입력수행도 또한 향상될 여지가 있다.

Effectiveness of a Sewing Practice Class for Cultivation of Creativity and Personality (바느질실습 수업이 중학생의 창의-인성에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aims to verify the effects of the sewing practice class, developed for the cultivation of creativity and personality, the two qualities that the Korean Department of Education tried to emphasize in 2009 national curriculum. We conducted a single-group pretest-posttest experiment with the developed sewing practice class as a treatment. Results are as follows. First, the comparison results of before and after the developed sewing practice class showed that there were meaningful differences in creativity and its subfactors such as divergent thinking skill, problem solving ability, open-mindedness and patience. This is because in-class activities such as coming up with ideas by group discussion, creative activities and problem-solving experiences make the students be aware that they are the hosts of the class. It also affected their abilities of producing creative ideas and solving problems proactively. Second, the developed sewing practice class had an impact on students' personality and its subfactors like responsibility, diligence, consideration, communication skill, and collaborative ability. This practice class is based on personal activities which lead to the completion of the group assignment. This has not only emphasized individual responsibilities, but also highlighted the completion of group work and encouraged the flow of communication and cooperation among students. As a result, we concluded that this practice class helped nourish the participating students' personality.
