  • This paper contains a new approach to blade section design method for marine propellers. The hydrodynamic characteristics of 2-D section are highly influenced by its geometrical parameters i.e., thickness and camber distributions and leading edge radius etc. To consider fully turbulent flow field near 2-D section. the finite volume method with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model which solve Reynolds time averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is applied. In this study, O-type grid system that can provide many calculation points on blade surface is used. The results were compared with those of the experiment of NACA0012 to confirm the accuracy of the developed codes. The goal of this study is the development of a blade section with high efficiency and low drag. To achieve this, we carried out the tests of lift, drag and cavitation characteristics in cavitation tunnel. The results of experiment were compared with numerical results in order to validate the proposed blades design method. By comparing the numerical results with the experiments, we found that the new blade section, KH28 allows superior performance in efficiency and cavitation avoidance characteristics. We further investigated the blade section design method and an application study of this section, KH28 to apply to the marine propeller. In order to improve the accuracy of numerical results on prediction of lift and drag, we conclude here that the 2-layer boundary model must be used.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with rectangular hollow section having constant area. The differential equations governing free vibrations of arches are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with clamped-clamped, clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the shape ratio

  • In this paper, two prediction models based on deep neural network that could predict cross-sectional stiffness of a rotor blade were proposed. Herein, we employed structural and material information of cross-section. In the case of a prediction model that used material properties as the input of the network, it was designed to predict the cross-sectional stiffness by considering elastic modulus of each cross-sectional member. In the case of the prediction model that used structural information as a network input, it was designed to predict the cross-sectional stiffness by considering the location and thickness of cross-sectional members as network input. Both prediction models based on a deep neural network were realized using data obtained by cross-sectional analysis with KSAC2D (Konkuk section analysis code - two-dimensional).

  • This study evaluate the characteristics of stainless steel for the use of stainless steel tubes as structural members. The strength of stainless steel tube was compared with that of steel tube stub-columns through tensile experiment and compressed experiment. The selected experimental parameters were diameter (width)-thickness and section shape. The results of tests showed that stainless steel tubes could be predicted as superior to steel tubes in terms of tensile strength, yield ratio, elongation percentage, and absorption ability of energy. The yield strength of stainless steel tubes were found to be higher than the Korean Standards ($Fy=2.1tf/cm^2$) and the design strength of SIJ-ASD($Fy=2.4tf/cm^2$). It was also higher then the yield strength of steel tubes. The plastic deformation of stainless steel tubes was found to beto that of steel tubes.

  • Recently, high performance(strength) steels have been utilized to structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. This paper is a series of basic study for the design specification of structural members using high performance steel, material properties of high performance rolled steel building structures; material properties of HSA800 steel was compared with the requirements of Korean Standards(KS) for HSA800. Welded H-shape stub columns with variables of width-to-thickness ratios are planned in order to investigate the local buckling behaviors and check the current design limit of width-to-thickness ratio and uniaxial compressive tests are carried out. In addition, the buckling behaviors of stub columns obtained finite element analysis were compared with those of test results.

  • Ultimate axial strength of longitudinally stiffened cylindrical steel shells for wind turbine tower was investigated by applying the geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of radius to thickness ratio of shell, shape and amplitude of initial imperfections, area ratio between effective shell and stiffener, and stiffener spacing on the ultimate axial strength of cylindrical shells were analyzed. The ultimate axial strengths of stiffened cylindrical shells by FEA were compared with design buckling strengths specified in DNV-RP-C202. The shell buckling modes obtained from a linear elastic bifurcation FE analysis as well as the weld depression during fabrication specified in Eurocode 3 were introduced in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometric imperfections. The radius to thickness ratio of cylindrical shell models was selected to be in the range of 50 to 200. The longitudinal stiffeners were designed according to DNV-RP-C202 to prevent the lateral torsional buckling and local buckling of stiffeners.

  • The study of girder-to-column joints under experiment and numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate change of the flexural capacity of the joints with the 2-layer upper reinforcement of girder within rectangular section and the single-layered upper reinforcement at the girder flange. According to the analysis results using the flange width, the flange thickness and the location of reinforcements in the upper flange as variables, in the models with a same effective width, the increasing rate of capacity has nothing to do with the flange width with a same effective width. However, the capacity of the models with the upper reinforcements arranged close to the rectangular beam section is larger than that of the models with the upper reinforcements arranged remotely from the rectangular section. If the range of arrangement fur reinforcement exceeds the effective width, despite of increasing the flange thickness, the capacity is not increased.
