  • This study is focused on the debarking and xylem separation yield of Paper Mulberry. We investigated the most efficient manual on the automatic debarking and xylem separator machine. The bast tissues of Paper Mulberry were separated in three layers including black outer layer, green inner layer, and white inner layer. A target is to save the white inner layer of these three layers as much as possible. The experimental machine most characterize xylem separation and debarking by frictional force between the bulges and Paper Mulberry by the drum rotation. It is possible automatically to operate the machine by controlling the temperature sensor and the time. Debarking process can be know that removed black outer layer has beem accumulate and measured the weight. The content of the extract, holocellulose, lignin and ashes of the white inner layer was analyzed. It is result that conditions of optimum process of the experimental machine is 45 RPM, temperature at $60^{\circ}C$(60 min.) and $80^{\circ}C$(60 min.), mixing bulge of 10 mm(120ea) and 30 mm(120ea) and capacity of Paper Mulberry 10 kg.

  • In general, the entire of paper mulberry bark, which is not cut into pieces with an appropriate length, have been used in the pulping. This kind of pulping method couldn't accomplish the improvement of beating and sheet forming efficiency. For this reason, we investigated the effects of the cutting length of paper mulberry bast fiber on pulping and Hanji (Korean traditional paper) properties, in order to develop high quality Hanji manufacturing process. The cutting length variation of paper mulberry white bast did not great effects on pulp yields. The pulp yields based on pulping methods were sulfomethylated pulping av. 57.4%, alkali-hydrogen peroxide pulping av. 55.4%, and alkaline pulping av. 53.5% respectively. The optical properties such as brightness, opacity, scattering coefficient, and absorption coefficient were slightly improved by the increase of paper mulberry white bast cutting length. The increase of paper mulberry white bast cutting length resulted in poor sheet formation. Physical properties such as breaking length, TEA, tear index, burst index, and folding endurance were slightly improved by the increase of cutting length. The modified pulping processes, which used sulfomethylated method and alkali-hydrogen peroxide method, showed better pulp and sheet properties than conventional alkaline pulping.

  • This study was carried on paper mulberry bast fibers, which were cut in the length of it's chip by three kinds. And they cooked by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and ammonium oxalate (AMOX), and pulping process was studied to inquire some properties of hand made papers. The results were as follows. AMOX pulps had $10\~17\%$ higher than NaOH, but amounts of the residual lignin of it's pulps and residual ash were high, and it surely can't be superior. In the freeness of pulps, AMOX pulps were higher than that of NaOH, but they showed tendency to opposite in view of relation of chip's length kinds. For the AMOX pulps, the physical characteristics test results were higher long fiber pulps than short fiber pulps. Specially, in folding endurance long fiber pulps were a very strong. NaOH pulp's physical characteristics test had shown results that were opposite of there of the AMOX pulps, if the length of the fiber is longer, the strengthts generally decreased. To get the optimum fiber's length according to use of paper and pulping method, they must be fractionate chip's length. The long fibers in NaOH pulps affected the paper quality greatly to length of chips.

  • Nowadays, the concern on the environmental load of bleaching process gave rise to the process of ECF(elemental chlorine free) and TCF(total clorine free). These sequences are based on oxygen-derived compounds such as oxygen, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide which is used as a typical eco-friendly bleaching agent. In this study, paper mulberry pulp was bleached with hydrogen peroxide and some bleaching process were accompanied with ultrasonication in order to increase the bleaching efficiency. The best bleaching efficiency of paper mulberry pulp was obtained in the condition of hydrogen peroxide and ultrasonication(20 kHz) bleaching system at $45^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The brightness and kappa number of paper mulberry pulp were gained to 5.09% and 3.52 respectively. and yield was slightly loosed to 2%. Therefore, the efficiency of hydrogen peroxide and ultrasonication bleaching system of paper mulberry pulp was superior to the conventional hydrogen peroxide bleaching system. Magnesium sulfate acted as a bleaching stabilizer for the increasement of yield. As a result, the yield and viscosity were increased to 2.2% and 12% respectively.

  • Use of a pectinase during preparing handmade papers from bast fiber of paper mulberry(Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb.) was investigated in order to decrease cooking chemicals and environmental pollution. For this purpose, four kinds of commercial pectinases, Rapidase LIQ(RLP), Rapidase Press(RP), Rapidase C80L Max(RCM) and Pectinase SS Kyowa(PSK) were used. And the durability of handmade papers before and after pectinase treatment was determined. RP and PSK had higher pectinase activity ad lower cellulase activity. The bast fiber was not defibered when pectinase was used. In order to increase the efficiency of enzymes, the bast fiber were treated ammonium oxalate(AO) or $K_2CO_3$under mild conditions. The AO pretreatment with those produced by $K_2CO_3$. The RP treated pulps after mild $K_2CO_3$cooking of the bast fiber were defibrated more easily than untreated pulp. The handmade paper prepared with the RP treated pulps after mild $K_2CO_3$cooking has good strength properties such as breaking length and folding endurance. Also, it has higher durability on heat aging, though its brightness was slightly lower than that of untreated paper.

  • The bast fiber of Paper mulberry has been generally used as a fibrous raw material in traditional Hanji-making. Nowadays, its uses is expanded to different special purposes such as paper mulberry yarn, laminated paper, antimicrobial paper depending on its application. Despite the wide array of the use of mulberry fibers, it is still limited due to some difficulties in the automation process of manufacturing works. This study is focused on the analysis of chemical components and morphological properties of paper mulberry bark for the automation of bark peeling process. The bast tissue of paper mulberry was separated in three plies; black outer layer, green inner layer, and white inner layer. The total lignin content, holocelluloses, extractives and ashes, and the anatomical structure of the three layers in mulberry bark tissue were investigated. The analysis showed that the black outer layer is composed of about 50% of total lignin content, whereas the white inner layer is composed of about 90% of holocellulose content.

  • From the root bark of Broussonetia kazinoki (Moraceae) two antioxidant components were identified. Their structures were determined as kazinol A (1) and kazinol E (2) (is oprenylated flavan and isoprenylated 1,3-diphenyl propan derivatives) by comparing NMR data with those of the reported compounds from relative plants. The antioxidant activity of 1 and 2 were monitored by the method of DPPH radical scavenging activity, whose $SC_{50}$ values were $41.4{\mu}M\;and\;33.4{\mu}M$, respectively. These compounds also exhibited inhibitory activity against tyrosinase, which is the sole key enzyme for the melanin biosynthesis and play a role in conversion of tyrosine to dopa, and dopa to dopaquinone. The antioxidant effect and the suppression of melanin biosynthesis are useful for anti-aging, increasing vitality in the incidence of major degenerative diseases, and cosmetic products in relation to hyperpigmentation.
