  • This study explored relationships between health perception and behavior of Korean relevant to particulate matter(PM) as PM in the atmosphere getting worse. To investigate the relationship in the personal hygiene dimension, we analysed the structural relationships among multi-dimensional health locus of control, perceived susceptibility and severity, and health behavior intention. Except internal among three tendencies of multi-dimensional health locus of control, chance and powerful other had an effect on perceived susceptibility and severity, respectively. Perceived susceptibility and severity also had a positive effect on the intention. Thus, to facilitate PM-related disease prevention, timely and reliable information should be supplied with the solution for lessening damage from PM, and then training for internalizing locus of control should be encouraged through eliminating fear and uncertainty. Finally, we discussed suggestions for future study.

  • The life of studying abroad includes not only school life, but also various areas such as economy, social relationship, and culture, so the level of satisfaction in each area could be differently shown in each individual. Based on this critical mind, this study aims to analyze the satisfaction with life of studying abroad in the multidimensional perspective. To analyze this, a latent class analysis was applied to identify subgroups, and a multinomial logistic regression model was applied to verify factors influencing group classification. The results of the analysis could be summarized into two. First, there were sub-groups showing different satisfaction with life of studying abroad. The sub-groups showed different levels of satisfaction in five areas such as housing, economy, social relationship, study, and culture, which were not discerned in single dimension. Second, the classification of group was complexly influenced by academic factor, psychological/emotional factor, and environmental factor. Especially, the predictive factor had different influences on each sub-factor. Based on such results of this study, this study aims to seek for the practical and policy-level suggestions for improving foreign students' satisfaction with life of studying abroad.

  • A mathematical model comprised with eight simultaneous quasi-linear partial differential equations was suggested to provide optimal chlorination strategy. Upstream weighted finite element method was employed to construct multidimensional numerical code. The code was verified against measured concentrations in three type of reactors. Boundary conditions and reaction rate were calibrated for the sixteen cases of experimental results to regenerate the measured values. Eight reaction rate coefficients were estimated from the modeling result. The reaction rate coefficients were expressed in terms of pH and temperature. Automatic optimal algorithm was invented to estimate the reaction rate coefficients by minimizing the sum of squares of the numerical errors and combined with the model. In order to minimize the concentration of chlorine and pollutants at the final usage sites, a real-time predictive control system is imperative which can predict the water quality variables from the chlorine disinfection process at the water purification plant to the customer by means of a model and operate the disinfection process according to the influent water quality. This model can be used to build such a system in water treatment plants.

  • In case of inundation in a city where populations and properties are highly concentrated, unlike rural areas it is necessary to apply the method of calculating the damage amount considering the sewage overflow and the corresponding building damage. In this study, Dorim 1 drainage sector has been analyzed with Multi-Dimensional Flood Damage Assessment (MD-FDA) for flood forecast. It is analyzed with past flood history through the SWMM model and calculated the amount of damage with district base data and the result of flow analysis. The result of the SWMM model to predict a range of flood, it was shown that the wide area after 4 hours (at 16:30) by sewer overflow. The building damage was estimated using MD-FDA. As a result, the maximum flood area has shown as $205,955m^2$ (0~0.5 m: $205,190m^2$, over 0.5 m: $865m^2$) and estimated building damage of Dorim 1 drainage sector is approximately 15.5 billion KRW (Korean won) and other contents is 7 billion KRW (Korean won). Also from 0 to 0.5 m depth estimated damage is approximately 22.4 billion KRW (Korean won) and over 0.5 m is 100 million KRW (Korean won). Based on the results of this study, it would be necessary to estimate the amount of sub-divided flood damage in urban areas according to various damage patterns such as flood depth and flood time.

  • Along with the well-established evidence on the negative effect of social isolation on physical and mental health, increasing attention has been paid to multi-dimensional nature of social isolation. One line of study on social isolation has discussed different pathways between objective and subjective social isolation and health. Another stream of the research focused on the possibly non-linear association between social isolation and health by age cohort groups. Drawing from the two lines of research, this study aimed at empirically examine to what extent objective and subjective social isolation are associated with physical and mental health independently and how the associations vary by three age cohorts(i.e. the middle-aged, the young old, the old-old). Data came from the first wave of Korean Social Life, Health and Aging Project (KSHAP) (N= 814). Findings showed 1) objective subjective isolation were significantly related with worse physical and mental health, interestingly, subjective social isolation was associated with mental health only, 2) pattern of association between social isolation and physical health varied by age cohorts. Specifically, compared to the middle-aged, the young old with higher objective social isolation exhibited lower level of physical health, while the old-old with higher subjective social isolation were likely to experience lower physical health. Based on the findings, we discussed implications and suggestions for future research and relevant policy/program development for ameliorating objective and subjective social isolation.
