  • Distributed multi-hop relay scheme to reduce delay-constrained outage probability for broadcast network is proposed. We consider multi-hop relay scheme, which is similar to distributed beamforming, where multiple nodes simultaneously relay packets, and we propose channel access control and power control for relaying nodes to satisfy energy constraint. Compared with flooding which is multi-hop relay scheme used for ZigBee, the proposed scheme is better in terms of outage probability and average reception throughput.

  • We propose an efficient cooperative ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) scheme for single-hop and multi-hop underwater acoustic communications, in which cooperative nodes are used to provide more reliable alternative paths for a specific source-to-destination connection. This alternative path has higher channel quality than that of the direct source-destination path. In addition, during a packet-relay through multiple hops, the typical acknowledgement (ACK) signal is replaced with overhearing data packet returned back from the next hop. The usage of overhearing as an ACK improves the system performance. In this paper, we evaluate the proposed scheme by comparing it with a conventional S&W ARQ in terms of throughput efficiency. Computer simulation results show that the proposed cooperative retransmission scheme can significantly improve the throughput by increasing the probability of successful retransmission.

  • The nearest-neighbor multihop routing with/without infrastructure support is known to achieve the optimal capacity scaling in a large packet-erasure network in which multiple wireless nodes and relay stations are regularly placed and packets are erased with a certain probability. In this paper, a throughput scaling law is shown for an infrastructure-supported erasure network where wireless nodes are randomly distributed, which is a more feasible scenario. We use an exponential decay model to suitably model an erasure probability. To achieve high throughput in hybrid random erasure networks, the multihop routing via highway using the percolation theory is proposed and the corresponding throughput scaling is derived. As a main result, the proposed percolation highway based routing scheme achieves the same throughput scaling as the nearest-neighbor multihop case in hybrid regular erasure networks. That is, it is shown that no performance loss occurs even when nodes are randomly distributed.

  • In wireless mesh networks (WMNs), the end-to-end throughput of a flow decreases drastically according to the traversed number of hops due to interference among different hops of the same flow in addition to interference between hops of different flows with different paths. This paper proposes a distributed multi-channel assignment scheme based on hops (DMASH) to improve the performance of a static WMN. The proposed DMASH is a novel distributed multi-channel assignment scheme based on hops to enhance the end-to-end throughput by reducing interference between channels when transmitting packets in the IEEE 802.11 based multi-interface environments. The DMASH assigns a channel group to each hop, which has no interference between adjacent hops from a gateway in channel assignment phase, then each node selects its channel randomly among the channel group. Since the DMASH is a distributed scheme with unmanaged and auto-configuration of channel assignment, it has a less overhead and implementation complexity in algorithm than centralized multi-channel assignment schemes. Simulation results using the NS-2 showed that the DMASH could improve remarkably the total network throughput in multi-hop environments, comparing with a random channel assignment scheme.

  • We propose the control channel access scheme for multi-interface multi-hop cognitive radio (CR) environment having a cluster structure. Due to the difficulty of obtaining common channels across the entire CR network, most multi-interface multi-hop CR networks put the control channel outside the CR bandwidth and dedicate one network interface to it in order to exchange the control information such as the activation of licensed users. However, this will be the waste of the network interface. Our focus is how to alternate between the control and the data channel without multichannel hidden node problem under the cluster structure where CR nodes connect with neighbors through multiple data channels. By using simulation, we evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. The results show that the proposed scheme achieves higher network throughput than the dedicated scheme where one network interface card should dedicate to the control channel and cannot be used for data transmission.

  • Recently, many countries have been developing new protocols to improve the performance of tactical ad hoc networks for implementing NCW (Network Centric Warfare). Combat net radio (CNR) networks are the most important communication infra for the ground forces such as infantry of Army. U.S. Army had developed MIL-STD-188-220D that is the Interoperability Standard for DMTDs (Digital Messages Transfer Device Subsystems) for voice and data communication in CNR. MIL-STD-188-220D is a candidate for MAC protocol of TMMR which is next radio and has a few constraints to used in TMMR. NAD (Network Access Delay) defined in MIL-STD-188-220D needs time synchronization to avoid collision. However, it is difficult for time synchronization to fit in multi-hop environment. We suggest the enhanced DAP (Deterministic Adaptable Priority)-NAD to prevent conflicts and decrease delays in multi-hop CNR. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the performance in multi-hop CNR networks.
