  • Theoretical development to generate the directional extreme waves in model basin is established based on wave focusing method. The effects of associated parameters, such as the directional range, frequency width, and center frequency, are investigated in terms of wave focusing efficiency. The two different spectral models of constant wave amplitude and constant wave slope are applied to control the wave characteristics. The wave packets simulated by theory are compared with numerical results based on Boussinesq equation and FEM. Both controls of direction and frequency spectrum are essential to focus directional waves effectively. It is noticed that wave focusing ability depends on the frequency bandwidth of spectrum rather than center frequency, and both spectral models with same parameters result in the equivalent efficiency of wave focusing.

  • A numerical procedure is described for predicting the motion and structural responses of the very large floating offshore structures supported by multiple 3-D floating bodies of arbitrary shape in multi-directional irregular waves. The developed numerical approach taking into account of the hydrodynamic interactions among the multiple floating bodies is based on a combination of the 3-D source distribution method, the wave interaction theory, the finite element method and the spectral analysis method to get the significant values of the dynamic responses in the multi-directional irregular waves. The effects of wave interactions and directionality on the dynamic responses of a very large offshore structure, which is semisubmersible ring type, are numerically examined.

  • Recently, as the technology of utilization for the ocean space is being advanced, floating structures are asked for being mare and mare huge-scale. A very large floating structure(VLFS) is considered as a flexible structure, because of a quite large length-to-breadth ratio and its geometrical flexibility. The main object of this study is to develop an accurate and convenient method on the hydroelastic response analysis of very large offshore structures on the real sea states. The numerical approach for the hydorelastic responses is based on the combination of the three dimensional source distribution methods, the dynamic response analysis method and the spectral analysis method. A model is considered as many rigid bodies connected elastic beam elements. The calculated results shaw good agreement with the experimental and calculated ones by Ohta.

  • A hyperbolic numerical model with multi-directional waves has been used to investigate harbor tranquility in Pohang New Harbor. Comparing numerical results with field data measured at two stations in the harbor, it was found that use of input condition of multi-directional waves is superior to the use of uni-directional waves. Calculations with unidirectional wave input give errors of about 12% at St. P2 and 26% at St. P3, while calculations with multi-directional wave input give errors of 4 % at St. P2 and. 14% at St. P3. Using the input condition of multi-directional waves, we investigate the tranquility of Pohang New Harbor with two layouts : the condition in 1994 when the downtime at the 7th pier was often reported and the condition in 1996 when the 4th disposal site was constructed. The numerical results show that the problem of downtime at the 7th pier cannot be solved by the construction of the 4th disposal site.

  • A numerical procedure is described for estimating the effects of the multi-directional irregular waves on the structural responses of the Tension Leg Platform (TLP). The numerical approach is based on a three dimensional source distribution method for hydrodynamic forces, a three dimensional frame analysis method for structural responses, in which the superstructure of TLP is assumed to be flexible instead of rigid. Hydrodynamic and hydrostatic forces on the submerged surface of a TLP have been accurately calculated by excluding the assumption of the slender body theory. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, and the structural damping are included in structural analysis. The spectral description used in spectral analysis of directional waves for the linear system of a TLP in the frequency domain is sufficient to completely define the structural responses. This is due to both the wave inputs and responses are stationary Gaussian random process of which the statistical properties in the amplitude domain are well known. The numerical results for the linear motion responses and tension variations in regular waves are compared with the experimental and numerical ones, which are obtained in Yoshida et al.(1983). The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.
