Optimization for Thermal spray Process by Taguchi Method (다구찌 기법을 이용한 용사코팅의 공정 최적화)

  • In the present study, process optimization for thermal-sprayed Ni-based alloy coating has been performed using Taguchi method and analysis of variance(ANOVA). Ni-based alloy coatings were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate, and the hardness test and wear test were performed. Experiments were designed as per Taguchi's L9 orthogonal array and tests were conducted with different Oxygen gas flow, Acetylene gas flow, Powder feed rate and Spray distance. Multi response signal to noise ratio (MRSN) was calculated for the response variables and the optimum combination level of factors was obtained simultaneously using Taguchi's parametric design.

  • This paper describes process optimization for thermal-sprayed Co-based self-flux alloy coating by Taguchi method. Co-based self-flux alloy coatings were fabricated according to $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array using flame spray process. Hardness test and wear test were performed, the results were analyzed by analysis of variance(ANOVA) considering a multi response signal to noise ratio(MRSN). From the results of ANOVA, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters on Co-based self-flux alloy coating could be predicted. The calculated hardness and wear rate of the coatings by ANOVA were found to be close to that of confirmation experimental result.

  • Though SLA(Stereolithography Apparatus) is being recognized as an innovative technology, it still can not be used to fully practical applications since it lacks of dimensional accuracy compared to conventional processes. In SLA, the accuracy of cured part depends upon the set of process parmeters. In order to improve the accuracy of SLA, this paper quantitatively evaluates how largely each process parameter of SLA contributes to the part accuracy and estimates the optimal set of process parameter which minimizes the dimensional errors of the test part, "letter-H" part. For this purpose, we use ANOVA(analysis of variance) and S/N(signal-to-noise)ratio of Taguchi method.hi method.

  • With society focusing more and more on environmental issues, the recycling of materials of all types has become an important concern. In this paper, optimization method is developed for reducing cost and improving quality in mill scale recycling. An experimental investigation into the process parameter effects is presented to determine the optimum configuration of parameters for performance, quality and cost. Taguchi's optimization approach was used to obtain the optimal parameters. The significant parameters were identified and their effects on mill scale recycling were studied. As a results, a confirmation experiment with the optimal levels of process parameters was carried out in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Taguchi method.

  • Recently, the regulations from the government and the concerns of people be raised to the interest in exhaust and intake noise of passenger car as much as other vehicles. In these demands, performance prediction software was developed in this paper. In this study, Robust design was used for improving the noise reduction capacity of intake system with the performance prediction software. On the basis of the existing design, length and radius of each component that was thought to be effective to the performance of intake system was selected. At first, factors are arranged by using Ll8 table of orthogonal array and then optimum value can be obtained by modified Ll6 table of orthogonal array.

  • Neuro-Fuzzy System is to combine merits of fuzzy inference system and neural networks. The neuro-fuzzy system applies a information about given input-output data to fuzzy theories and deals these fuzzy values with neural networks, e.g. first, redefines normalized input-output data as membership functions and then executes thses fuzzy information with backpropagation neural networks. This paper describes an innovative application of the Taguchi method for the determination of these parameters to meet the training speed and accuracy requirements. Results drawn from this research show that the Taguchi method provides an effective means to enhance the performance of the neuro-fuzzy system in terms of the speed for learning and the accuracy for recall.

  • Rapid Prototyping(RP) has been widely applied in designing and developing processes a new product. The functional requirements of a rapid prototyping system are high speed and high accuracy, and they depend on the operating parameters, some of which can be set by users. The accuracy is evaluated by dimensional errors and form errors of manufactured pars. A specially designed specimen with various features has been used for the accuracy evaluation. According to the Taguchi experimental design techniques, and orthogonal array of experiments has been set which has the least number of experimental runs to find the parametric effects. A laser scanner is used to obtain the point data of the parts and Surfacer is used to determine the lengths and angles. The conditions for the FDM manufacturing parametrs have been found.

  • As the manufacturing processes of automotive engine piston, gravity die-casting, squeeze casting, hot forging and powder forging process are generally used for the various specifications. As the semi-solid forming(SSF) is compared with conventional casting such as gravity die-casting and squeeze casting for the characteristics of its process, the product without inner defects such as gas porosity and segregation can be obtained and its microstructure is globular grain. In SSF process, the materials are heated up to the temperature between the solvus and liquidus line at which the materials exists in the form of liquid-solid mixture. In this time, Discussion is given about reheating process of row material and results are presented regarding accurate temperature and process variables controlling for right solid fractions.

  • In the previous report1), the grinding characteristics of quartz were investigated. In this paper, the grinding mechanisms of brittle materials including ceramics and quartz are modeled and a new parameter SDR(Surface roughness Direction Ratio) is proposed to characterize the grinding mechanisms of such materials. A set of experiments were performed to verify the effectiveness of the suggested parameter. The experimental results indicate that the plastic deformation is the dominant material removal mode at the grinding conditions which show the higher value of SDR. In the case of quartz, the material was removed by brittle fracture in a lower value of SDR and by plastic deformation in a higher value of it. SDR is not affected by wheel mesh size when brittle fracture occured. But in the plastic deformation case, SDR value increases with wheel mesh size.

  • power transfer breaker is a device used to transfer the load from the electricity power line to the emergency generators. In case of overload, it also functions as a circuit breaker. In this work, a new mechanism for the device is suggested. Among the various design challenges, optimization of the trigger mechanism is identified as of central importance. Optimal design decisions are made with the use of Taguchi method.
