  • In this study, the applicability of reduction-oxidation-linked treatment was evaluated for nitrobenzene and a by-product by analyzing the reaction kinetics. Nitrobenzene showed very low reactivity to persulfate that was activated using various methods. Nitrobenzene effectively reacted through the reduction process using Zero-Valent Iron (ZVI). However, aniline, a toxic substance, was produced as a by-product. Reduction-oxidation-linked treatment is a method that can allow the oxidative degradation of aniline after reducing nitrobenzene to aniline. The experimental results show improved reactivity and complete decomposition of the by-product. Improved reactivity and decomposition of the by-product were observed even under conditions in which the reduction-oxidation reaction was induced simultaneously. No activator was injected for persulfate activation in the process of reducing oxidant linkage, and the activation reaction was induced by ferrous iron eluted from the ZVI. This indicates that this method can be implemented relatively simply.

  • Organic contaminants can be released into water environments due to chemical accidents and exist as dissolved and non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL). Fenton oxidation was tested for bisphenol A and nitrobenzene as model organic contaminants in dissolved and NAPL states. Fenton oxidation was successfully applied for both of the dissolved and NAPL states of the two pollutants and the results indicated that a quick treatment was needed to reduce the risk from a chemical accidents instead of carrying out oxidation after the contaminants dissolve in water. A set of Fenton reactions were tested under seawater conditions because chemical accidents often occurs in the ocean. Chloride ions act as radical scavengers and inhibit Fenton oxidation. The reaction rate is inversely proportional to salt contents and the reduced reaction rate can be compensated by increasing the quantity of the oxidizing agents. The current study showes that Fenton oxidation could be applied as a quick treatments for organic contaminant in dissolved and NAPL state organic contaminants released as a result of leaks or chemical accidents.

  • The title compound (C13H17NO2S) is monoclinic, space group P21/a, with a = 13.756 (3), b = 9.310(4), c = 21.305(3) $\AA$, $\beta$ = 95.0。, Z = 8, V = 2718.11 $\AA$3, Dc = 1.23$g·{\cdot}cm-3$, (Mo k$\alpha$) = 0.71069$\AA$,$\mu$ = 2.18 cm-1, F(000) = 1071.86, T = 298, R = 0.085 for 2935 unique observed reflections with I >2.0$\sigma$(I). The structure was solved by direct methods. The C-H bond lengths and the methyl groups are fixed and refined as their ideal geometry by allowing to ride on the parent atoms. Both molecules A and B have almost same structures except for two terminal ethyl groups. The ethylene-like skeleton including the nitro group in one molecule is nearly perpendicular to the plane of the methylbenzene group and two ethyl groups form a cis-type structure which has the dfferent orientations between two molecules; in the molecule A, two terminal methyl groups being the opposite directional arrangement against the plane of its skeleton, while in the B, with the same directional structure from its plane. The molecules in the crystal are packed together by non-bonded van der Waals forces.

  • The solubility of ethyl bromide in nitrobenzene and in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene has been measured at $19^{\circ}$ in the presence and absence of gallium bromide. When gallium bromide does not exist in the system, the solubility of ethyl bromide in nitrobenzene is greater than in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, indicating the stronger interaction of ethyl bromide with nitrobenzene than with 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. When there exists gallium bromide in the system, an unstable 1: 1 complex, C2H5Br·GaBr3, of gallium bromide with ethyl bromide is formed in the solution. The 1: 1 complex in solution dissociates into the components to a large extent according to one of the following equilibria or both: $C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3{\rightleftarrows}C_2H_5Br+GaBr_3$C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3{\rightleftarrows}C_2H_5Br+1}2GaBr_3$$ The stability of the 1: 1 complex of ethyl bromide with gallium bromide is compared with that of the corresponding complex of methyl bromide.

  • The solubilities of hydrogen bromide and methyl bromide in nitrobenzene and in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene have been measured in the presence and absence of gallium bromide. When gallium bromide does not exist in the system, the solubilities of HBr and MeBr in nitrobenzene are greater than in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, indicating the greater basicity of nitrobenzene than 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. When there exists gallium bromide in the system, the addition compounds, GaBr3·HBr and GaBr3·CH3Br, have been found to exist in solution. The addition compound of GaBr3·HBr is stable in nitrobenzene but unstable in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. On the other hand the addition compound of $GaBr_3{\cdot}CH_3Br$ is unstable in both solvents. All of these unstable addition compounds dissociate into components to large extents according to one of the following equilibria or both: $$GaBr_3{\cdot}RBr{\leftrightarrows}GaBr_3+RBr\;GaBr_3{\cdot}RBr{\leftrightarrows}1}2\;Ga_2Br_6+RBr$.$ where R denotes either hydrogen atom or methyl group.

  • The photochemistry of the derivatives of o-nitrobenzylcarboxyl esters or benzylsulfonyl derivatives has been well studied separately. But little attempt has been made to combine the fruits these two studies. Being photochemically active, benzylsulphonyl and intro groups should influence the reactivity of each other's, especially when the excited states are fully mixed due to the proximity of their location. The questions which should be clearly answered are; what kind of effect will be excerted to the other group, and whether these two functional groups are coupled in the course of the reaction. To answer the questions raised above, wer have synthesized two sulfonyl esters and four amides from the newly available starting material, 2-nitro-${\alpha}$-toluenesulfonyl chloride. The products identified from the exploratory solution photochemistry were cyclohexanol, phenol, cyclohexylamine, and sulfur dioxide. The results are not much different from the products originally anticipated. It has been temporarily concluded that there is little interaction between the benzyl sulfonyl group and ortho-nitro chromophore. The fact that a base (an amine) has been photochemically generated in solution photochemistry was further confirmed by and utilized in the solid phase quantitative photochemistry done on the film, so as to carry out the photochemical epoxide cure.

  • The rates of reaction between 4-substituted-2,6-dinitrochlorobenzenes with para-substituted anilines in methanol-acetonitrile mixtures were measured by conductometry. It was observed that the rate constant increases in the order of X = 4-$NO_2 {\gg}4-CN {\gg}4- CF_3$, where X is a substituent in the substrate. The rate constant also increases in the order of Y = p-O$CH_3{\gg}p- CH_3{\gg}H {\gg}p-Cl{\gg}m- NO_2$, where Y is a substituent in the aniline ring. Kinetic studies in the methanol-acetonitrile solvent system with various nucleophiles showed that the N-C bond forming step is making a great contribution to the overall second order rate constant. The electrophilic catalysis by methanol probably consists of the hydrogen bonding between alcoholic hydrogen and leaving chloride in the transition state. The nucleophilic catalysis by methanol may be ascribed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between alcoholic oxygen and hydrogens of amines in the transition state. All these experimental facts are supporting the operation of $S_N$Ar machanism with the second step being the rate determining. This mechanism can be successfully fitted to the PES model.

  • It is possble to study charge transfer property which is caused by height variation because we can see the organic materials barrier height and STM tip by organic materials energy band gap. Here, we investigated the negative differential resistance(NDR) and charge transfer property of self-assembled 4,4-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-(thioacetyl)benzene, which has been well known as a conducting molecule. Self-assembly monolayers(SAMs) were prepared on Au(111), which had been thermally deposited onto pre-treatment($H_{2}SO_{4}:H_{2}O_{2}$=3:1) Si. The Au substrate was exposed to a 1 mM/l solution of 1-dodecanethiol in ethanol for 24 hours to form a monolayer. After thorough rinsing the sample, it was exposed to a $0.1{\mu}M/1$ solution of 4,4-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-(thioacetyl)benzene in dimethylformamide(DMF) for 30 min and kept in the dark during immersion to avoid photo-oxidation. After the assembly, the samples were removed from the solutions, rinsed thoroughly with methanol, acetone, and $CH_{2}Cl_{2}$, and finally blown dry with $N_2$. Under these conditions, we measured electrical properties of self-assembly monolayers(SAMs) using ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy(UHV-STM). The applied voltages were from -1.50 V to -1.20 V with 298 K temperature. The vacuum condition is $6{\times}10^{-8}$ Torr. As a result, we found that NDR and charge transfer property by a little change of height when the voltage is applied between STM tip and electrode.

  • Rosin-maleic anhydride adduct (RMA) was synthesized from rosin and maleic anhydride. The polyamideimides were obtained by reacting the adduct with two aromatic diisocyanates using sodium methoxide as catalyst. The yield and the inherent viscosity of polymers obtained by the reaction in NMP solvent were low because of the possible reaction of NMP solvent with diisocyanate monomer. The polymers were synthesized in solvent mixture of NMP and cosolvents such as xylene, acetophenone, benzonitrile, and nitrobenzene in order to minimize the side reaction of NMP with diisocyanates. The yield of polymer obtained by the reaction in NMP-nonpolar cosolvent mixtures was about 70% and that obtained by the reaction in NMP-polar cosolvent mixtures was over 90%, respectively. The polymers were either amorphous or poorly cystalline, and soluble only in highly polar solvents. The inherent viscosity of polymers ranges from 0.12-0.26dl/g. The results of thermal analysis showed that the polymer had good thermal stability with initial decomposition temperature over $330^{\circ}C$.
