Repellent Activity of Five Different Plant Extracts Against Aedes albopictus (흰줄숲모기에 대한 5종 식물추출물의 기피효능 평가)

  • Five different methanol extracts of plants were evaluated as a mosquito repellent against Aedes albopictus in nude mice model. The volatile components of plants were analyzed with GC-MS. The effective dose was the highest in Nepeta cataria with 72.9, 83.7, 86.4, and 97.3% efficiencies at 10, 50, 100, and 200 ㎍/mL, respectively. Nepeta cataria, Actinidia polygama, and Artemisia annua extracts were the most effective in duration time test. And there was no difference compared to negative control in the low mosquito repellent efficiency from 30 minutes. As a result of analyzing the volatile components of each plant, a total of 28 components in Mentha suaveolens, 19 components in Actinidia polygama, 27 components in Artemisia annua, 26 components in Nepeta cataria, and 19 components in Taraxacum platycarpum were detected. Especially, nepetalactone known as an effective ingredient of a mosquito repellent was identified (27.95 mg/Kg) in one of volatile components of Nepeta cataria. Overall, our results provide the possibility to develop mosquito repellents material using natural plants which contain various volatile components.

The Characterization of Mass Transfer Factors in Neuroblastoma Implanted in Immunosuppressed Nude Rats (면역결핍누드쥐에 이식된 neuroblastoma에서의 물질전달에 미치는 인자의 특성)

  • The chemotherapy using macromolecules, i.e., monoclonal antibodies loaded with anticancer agents hasn't been successful in delivering therapeutic amount of the conjugates. The comprehensive evaluation of mass transfer factors in tumor is prerequisite for the development of the effective chemotherapy. Characterization of neuroblastoma implanted in immunosuppressed athymic nude rats was performed. Its growth kinetics, glucose metabolic rate (GMR) were measured along with the interstitial fluid pressure (IFP), blood perfusion rate (BPR) and pH distribution throughtout the tumor radius. Volume doubling time and GMR were 8.1 days(SD 0.44 day), 23.53 mg/min/100 g(SD 3.54 mg/min/100 g), respectively. The IFP in tumor center was increased with tumor volume, and approached to 3 mmHg (SD 2.6 mmHg) when the tumor was 3 cm high. The radial distribution of IFP, BPR and pH in 2 cm high tumors showed that BPR and pH were decreased, while IFP was increased as the ~ensors moved toward the tumor center. The elevated IFP, decreased BPR and pH in tumor center suggested that the delivery of conjugates might be increased by properly manipulating mass transfer factors.

The Functional Effects for the Prevention and Treatment on Hair Loss from Astringent Persimmon Fruit Extracts (떫은감 추출물의 발모 및 탈모의 기능성 효과)

  • Astrigent persimmon fruit resources have been used traditionally to treat different systemic diseases and acclaimed for various biological activities including hair growth. This study investigates the hair restoration efficacy of astrigent persimmon fruit extracts on genetically predisposed to balding pattern Black mice model. Water extract of astrigent persimmon fruit(10 mg/mouse/day) with standardized vehicle formulation, only vehicle and positive control minoxidil (2%) were applied daily until completion of two full hair growth generations. The changing pattern of hair growth were observed through two hair growth generations of C57BL/6 Black mice. The hair existing area and hair length was increased significantly (P > 0.001) in astrigent persimmon fruit treated mice than vehicle-treated control mice. Furthermore, histological assessment revealed that the number of hair follicles did not remarkably increase after astrigent persimmon fruit treatment in compare to control mice. Thus, our data revealed that the topical application of astrigent persimmon fruit may promote hair growth in nude mice by extend the hair existing area and increase hair length which is an indicator of prolong anagen phase.

Effect of commercial Makgeolli on tumor growth in tumor xenograft mice (종양이식 모델 쥐에서 동결건조 시판 막걸리가 종양성장에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of commercial Makgeolli on tumor growth in human gastric adenocarcinoma cells (AGS) in a xenograft cancer model, transplanted with AGS cells. Commercial Makgeolli was first dealcoholized by evaporation and used as the test sample. We detected a significant increase in the volume and weight of tumor in nude mice (induction) that were transplanted with AGS cells. Administration of $100mg/kg{\cdot}day$ group (ML), and $500mg/kg{\cdot}day$ group (MH) dealcoholized commercial Makgeolli significantly decreased tumor growth. In this study, 5-FU $18mg/kg{\cdot}day$ was used as a positive control for tumor growth inhibition. Additionally, determination of the body weight of both the groups revealed no side effects after the administration of dealcoholized commercial Makgeolli. Using the cell culture system, we also evaluated the effect of dealcoholized commercial Makgeolli on caspase-3/7 activity in the AGS cells. Treatment with dealcoholized commercial Makgeolli increased the activation of caspase-3/7 and the apoptotic markers in AGS cells in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, dealcoholized commercial Makgeolli can be used for cancer prevention.
