Estimates of Genetic Parameter for Carcass Traits and Chemical Composition Analysis in Hanwoo (한우 도체형질 및 도체 일반성분 유전모수 추정)

  • The objective of this study is to check the applicability of the improved trait through the nutritional value of loin and the estimation of genetic parameter through the chemical composition analysis(moisture, crude fat, crude protein, crude ash) for Hanwoo carcass traits and loin. The data of 1kg of loin sampled and analyzed for 2,033 Hanwoo progeny test(steers) from $47^{th}$ to $57^{th}$ were used as the disclosure material used in this study. The study resulted that the heritability for carcass weight, eye muscle area, back fat thickness and marbling score which are Hanwoo carcass traits was estimated to be 0.37, 0.51, 0.44 and 0.57, respectively and the heritability for moisture, crude fat, crude protein and crude ash which are the chemical composition analysis to be 0.62, 0.64, 0.58 and 0.12, respectively. And the genetic correlation estimate between carcass weight and crude fat was 0.35, and marbling score with moisture, crude fat, crude protein and crude ash was -0.966, 0.964, -0.924 and -0.664, respectively. The genetic correlation between moisture and crude fat, crude protein was analyzed to be -0.998, 0.969 and a high genetic correlation was shown in crude fat and crude protein, -0.979. As the chemical composition analysis value showed high heritability in moisture, crude fat and crude protein, improved traits are considered to be available.

Evaluation of Regional Adaptability in Introduced Super Sweet Corn Hybrids and Heritability of Agronomic Traits (도입 초당옥수수 교잡종의 지역 적응성 및 농업 형질의 유전력 평가)

  • This study evaluated newly introduced, commercial super sweet corn hybrids (Zea mays L.) for their potential as breeding materials. Agronomic traits were measured and variance components were obtained using a linear mixed model to estimate the heritability. The trials were carried out in 2018 at two locations (Haenam and Oksan in South Korea). All traits had low heritability, except for mid tasseling and silking days. These traits with low heritability mostly had low genetic variance component estimate. In case of ear height ratio, significant genotype by location appeared to be responsible for low genetic variance, which in turn led to low heritability. Low heritability estimates from the trials with commercial hybrids were perhaps because those hybrids were highly improved for commercial success. Hence, this does not necessarily point to them having poor potential as breeding materials. To overcome low heritability, significant genotype by environment interaction, and achieve high selection efficiency, intermating among hybrids is recommended to create new recombinants before inbred line development.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the environmental and genetic factors on the carcass traits of Korean cattle. We have used the data of 22,954 Korean cattle slaughtered from 2005 to 2009 in Gyeongnam region and estimated the genetic parameters of 36,868 cattle including the pedigree individuals by means of EM-REML analytical method. In summary, the heritability of the carcass weight, eye muscle area, backfat thickness and marbling score was 0.39, 0.30, 0.33 and 0.62, respectively. The carcass weight and the eye muscle area showed high correlation between them with the genetic correlation of 0.86 and the phenotypic correlation of 0.72. The high heritability of marbling score is assumed to be the result of focusing the breed improvement on the quality of the meat. Through this study, it is considered that the Korean cattle in Gyeongnam region are improving, which will thus contribute to the increase of the farmer's income. Additional study on the economic trait must be carried out to obtain clearer results that will lead to further improvement of Korean cattle.

Classification of Garlic Germplasms Based on Agronomic Characteristics and Multivariative Analysis (마늘 유전자원의 작물학적 특성과 다변량 분석에 의한 품종군 분류)

  • This research was conducted to investigate the genetic diversity and select useful accession with agronomic characteristics of garlic (Allium sativum L.). germplasms at Garlic Research Institute in Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Service. Morphological diversity and relationships among 160 germplasms collected from 26 countries were assessed by methods of clustering and principal component analysis. Among 11 types of leaves and bulbs characteristics, emergence days of leaf showed the highest variation with coefficient of variation of 84.8%, and the bulb weight and the number of scales showed higher variability with 24.3%. Correlation analysis based on 11 quantitative traits showed that bulb weight and bulb length have very high positive correlation with bulb quantity. Plant height, leaf length, and number of leaves showed positive correlation with bulb weight as collections with better performance in growth produced large bulb with higher quality. The cluster analysis based on 5 principal components generated 6 clusters with an average distance of 1.6 among clusters. Domestic genetic resources were the largest with 36 species (22.5%) in group II.
