  • A new cultivar of Euphorbia milii, 'Panorama' was developed at Cactus Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services in 2009. 'Gabi' and 'Maxi' were crossed in 2001 and three $F_1$ seedlings were obtained. Pedigree selection was performed in 2002. One line was finally selected and named as 'Panorama' through the test of specific character from 2007 to 2009. The new cultivar 'Panorama' has green and pink colored bract, and it has 2~3 each of inflorescence number, 2.0 cm of bract width, 4.3 each of lateral shoot and 14.9 cm of plant height. Characters of the cultivar can be maintained by vegetative propagation.

  • Fragmented urban forests, as green islands within urban area, are the primary habitats for a vast number of different organisms inhabiting large cities. The areas of the urban forests are usually small, and hence, the proportion of the forest edge is relatively high. It is therefore expected that overall butterfly diversity may be lower than that of suburban or rural forests, and that those of grassland species, forest edge species, and generalist species with a wider niche breadth may be richer. Butterflies were surveyed weekly by the line transact method in order to characterize the butterfly community of the Hongneung Forest, a fragmented urban forest in Seoul. Butterfly richness of the study forest is much lower than those of main forests around or in Seoul. Grassland species, forest edge species, and generalist species were found to be richer, which was in agreement with the expected patterns of urban butterfly communities. Also, an endangered species, Spindasis takanonis, was observed in the Hongneung Forest, showing that urban forests play important roles for conservation of rare species.

  • Polyethylene mulches have been used for weed control in vegetable production in Korea. One of the additional benefits associated with polyethylene mulches is soil warming. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of colored mulches on soil temperature change and Chinese cabbage yield. Mulch treatments were green (GV), black (BV), transparent (TV), and non-mulched (NM) soil. The highest soil-warming effect occurred under green mulch, and the lowest effect was found under black mulch. Daily mean values of soil temperature (10 cm depth) under GV were $2^{\circ}C$ higher than in NM soil. At midday (16:00), mean soil temperature was higher by $3.9^{\circ}C$ in GV, $3.1^{\circ}C$ in BV, and $2.1^{\circ}C$ in TV as compared to NM soil. At night (20:00-06:00), there was no significant difference in soil temperature among the treatments of different colored mulch, but soils in the mulch treatments were $2.4^{\circ}C$ higher as compared to NM soil. As compared with NM, the yield of Chinese cabbage under GV, BV, and TV were higher by 6.0, 26.0, and 12.0%, respectively.

  • A study of physical and chemical characteristics of pigments from Rhodopseudomonas viridis DSM 133 was carried out for development of natural greenish colorant. Through visible absorption scanning, it showed three main absorption peaks at 378, 414 and 677 nm with three minor peaks at 510, 540 and 618nm, and it was shown to be greenish color. These pigments were more stabilized in alkaline solutions than in acid of between pH 6 and 9, and it was shown to be stabilized at the temperature below $40^{\circ}C$. In the presence of light and oxygen, the stability of pigments rapidly degraded, and it became unstable in the presence of metal ion such as $Fe^{3+}$ and $Al^{3+}$. But in the presence of $Cu^{2+}$ were very stable. On the result of TLC analysis, pigments were shown to be composed of four color fractions and main color fractions were F-4 and F-2.
