  • The pre-elderly approaching old age in our society confront having a harsh economic status. The main purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing the preparation of the pre-elderly for overcoming this status. In particular, it focused on financially stable pre-elderly persons. The data from the 2008 Chungcheongnam-do Welfare Plan for Five Years collected by the Chungnam Women's Policy Development Institute was used to analyze the research questions. The participants in this study included 735 persons (ages 55-64) living in Chungcheongnam-do. Five hundred and eighty-one self-reported questionnaires were used for the final analysis using SAS, version 9.1. This study attempted to identify the important variables needed to find the factors related to socio-demographic and economic characteristics, the adult-child relationship, the preparation plan for old age, etc. The results showed that job and health status were key to preparation for financial stability among the elderly. Another finding was the importance of concrete financial planning for the elderly; that is to say, the pre-elderly who made more concrete plans than indefinite ones were likely to belong to stable households. Another significant finding was that it is important to consider both objective and subjective factors for the financial preparation of the elderly. These results should serve as reference data for the future welfare policy for the elderly, because the financial independence of the elderly will be vital for a healthy relationship between new and old generations.

And, second, the influences of the feeling of self-efficacy on the preparations for the old age, also, are positive. Third, the influences of the social capital on the preparations for the old age, too, are positive. As such, we can find out that both the direct and indirect effects were shown. Lastly, we can find out that the feeling of self-efficacy has the partial mediating effects on the social capital and the preparations for the old age. Consequently, although the feeling of self-efficacy is insufficient with regard to the economic preparations, we can positively find out that it was able to effectively derive the satisfaction in life by utilizing the social capital. In preparation for the super-aged society, the improvements and the expansions of the social programs and the services resulting from them are needed through the establishment of a foundation regarding the life-periodical, social participation, the establishment of a socially-shared system that can be continued, and the policy of strengthening the social capital.

  • OECD countries have been stimulating private pensions instead of public pensions because the financial stability of public pensions has been threatened by the aging population. Korea, which has the fastest aging population in the world, has been following the recommended policies of major countries. Unlike major economies, however, most of Korea's household assets are composed of real estate assets. Due to the economic and social importance of real estate assets in Korea, the wealth effect of real estate has been used as a major tool in macroeconomic policy. This study analyzed the effect of real estate value changes on the contribution of private pensions (personal pension + retirement pension). Utilizing a two-way, fixed effect model with the balanced panel data of the National Survey of Tax and Benefit, empirical results presented that the private pension contribution increased by 0.171% when the value of real estate increased by 1%. Thus, real estate value changes were analyzed as positive for retirement preparation through private pension. These results suggested that if the real estate market would shrink in the future, consumption would decrease, and the degree of preparation for retirement might be smaller.
