  • Inherent damage zone model is presented to explain the fatigue properties near the fatigue limit and the crack growth threshold consistently Inherent damage zone model assumes that the stress at a point which is located at a small distance, $r_0$, an inherent length of the material that represents the size of effective damage zone, from the crack initiation position governs the fatigue characteristics regardless of the geometric configuration of the specimen; smooth specimen, notched specimen or cracked specimens with short and long crack length. A special feature of the paper is using the exact stress distributions of notched and cracked specimens at the strength evaluations. Analytical elastic solutions by Neuber and Westergaard are employed for this purpose Relationship between fatigue limit of smooth specimen and threshold stress of cracked specimen, occurrence condition of non-propagating crack at the root of elliptic notch and circular hole and relationship between stress concentration factor and fatigue notch factor are discussed quantitatively based on the proposed model.

  • The static tensile tests of GFRP, ID300, CFRID300 and CFRPEEK were made on the plain and notched specimens at room temperature. The results were discussed based on linear notch mechanics which was proposed by H.Nistani. The fracture of notched GFRP, ID300, CFRID300 and CFRPEEK specimens is controlled by the elastic maximum stress, $({\sigma}_max)$, and the notch root racius,$\rho$, alone, independently of the other geometrical conditions. The relation between fracture nominal stress,$({\sigma}_max)$, and stress concentration factor, $K_t$ and a part where $({\sigma}_c)$ is nearly constant independent of $K_t$. A similar phenomenon can be seen in the fatigue tests of notched specimes under rotating bending or push-pull. The almost constant $({\sigma}_c)$ values correspond to the nearly constant apparent stress intensity factor, $K_{1pc}$ values, obtained by assuming ,$\rho$=0. This can be attributed to the existence of the stable crack. Linear notch mechanics is very useful for analyzing the static tensile fracture behavior of notched GFRP, ID300, CFRPEEK specimens.

  • Concrete, a mixed material, has heterogeniety, anisotrophy and nonlinearity. Therefore, in its 'racture analysis, it is more reasonable to evaluate its fracture toughness by applying the concept of 'racture mechanics rather than the strength concept. Up to the present the concepts of fracture mechanics which were applied to concrete have been divided into two main classes. The one is the concept of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the other is the concept of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. But it has been pointed out that there are many problems and irrationalities in applying the concept of linear elastic fracture mechanics to concrete. In this study, the J -integral method and the COD method mainly used in the analysis of nonlinear fracture mechanics, were introduced and the three point bending test was carried out for investigating the effects of the variation of the maximum aggregate size and notch depth on the fracture behavior and the crack growth of concrete, and the relationships of fracture energy and crack opening displacement. According to the results of this study the more the maximum aggregate size and the notch depth increased, the more the nonlinearity of load-deflection behavior was remarkable. The increase of the coarse aggregate size created the more ductility of concrete. Thus concrete showed the more stable fracture. As for the path of the crack growth, the more the coarse aggregate size increased, the more it was irregulary deviated from the straight line but it was not almost affected by the variation of the notch depth. Also, the fracture energy increased according as the coarse aggregate size increased and the notch depth decreased.

  • The method to evaluate the flexural capacity of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete beams was proposed in this study. An experimental program was set up and fourteen beams have been tested. Test results were compared with predictions by design code and by the proposed method, respectively. It was found that predictions by using ACI 544 Committee recommendations considerably underestimate the flexural capacity. Underestimation of flexural capacity resulted from that of tensile stress block. Three-point bending test data of notched prism specimens and their inverse analysis results were incorporated into modeling of tension stress block. The ratio of the predicted to the experimental flexural capacity was in the range of 0.98 to 1.14. The present study represents that the proposed method allows more realistic prediction of flexural capacity of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete beams.

  • This experimental study was performed to lnvestigate the effects of the lergths dnd volume contents of glued hooked steel fiber for the fracture toughness and strength of c oncretc. The notched steel fiber reinforced concrete beams with different flber length(30, 60mm) and fiber volume content(O.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0%) were tested under 3-point benclmg, md 1 he flexural strengths, fracture energy and CMOD were obtained from the experimental data. The fracture energy v~ds used as d means to evaluate the fracture toughness ot concrete. The results showed that the frdcture toughness and 5trength of conuett. were generally increased ds the content of steel fiber was inc~edsed, arid the length of steel ilber had a great efiect on the flexural strength but little on the compressive itrength and fractule toughness. And also, considering the distributions of steel fiber, workablity and the maxinium size of coarse dqgregates, the optimum content of steel fiber seemed to be about 1.0 '0, and when lts length uias longer the results were somewhat tavorable.

  • In this study, a series of fatigue tests are performed in order to estimate quantitatively the characteristics of fatigue crack growth rate according to the base metal, heat affected zone(HAZ) and weld metal, and the welding method and grade of strength of object steels, and the influence on fatigue crack growth rate according to the direction of welded line for high strength steels of SM570, POSTEN60, and POSTEN80 steels. From the fatigue test results, the retardations of fatigue crack growth rate are remarkable in case that the direction of notch is parallel to welded line than in case that the direction of notch is perpendicular to welded line because of compresive residual stress in weld metal & HAZ. And the characteristics of fatigue crack growth rate according to welding method are that the dispersion of fatigue crack growth rate in case of FCAW method is smaller than that of SAW method. Also, it knows that the fatigue crack growth rate converges in high stress intensity factor range. Meanwhile, fatigue safety is guaranteed sufficiently in the object steels because the fatigue crack growth rate in the range of fatigue crack propagation has a similar tendency to the test results & existing results.

  • Fictitious notch radius approach is based on the Neuter's microstructural support hypothesis which assumes that fatigue crack is governed by highly stressed volume of the material right on the weld toe area rather than the surface stress at a pin point of weld toe area. Variety of successes have been achieved in applying this methodology to the fatigue of welded joint, hence, it became one of recommended design procedure in IIW's recommendation as well as many ship classification societies. 1mm fictitious notch radius approach was applied to the various fatigue problems of welded joints in this study covering the effect of weld size, notch stress calculation for 3D geometry and low cycle fatigue problem. It was found that fictitious notch radius approach fumed out to be very effective and accurate in dealing with fatigue strength of welded joint.

  • The cylinder cover stud for assembling the combustion chamber components of low-speed marine diesel engine is one of the main structural components in engine. To understand the structural behavior of the stud is quite important for safe and economic design of it. In this paper, the structural behavior and design adequacy of the stud have been evaluated through strain measurement and structural analysis for the world's two largest engine types. Moreover, a feasibility study for design modification was carried out based on fatigue test and calculation. The results showed that 1) the stud experiences very high stress ratio under normal operating conditions, 2) the fatigue strength of the stud is sufficient, and 3) results from strain measurement and structural analysis were quite close each other.

  • The effects of the hole size(2R) and the specimen width(W) on the fatigue strength and the fatigue life in plain woven glass/epoxy composite plates are experimentally investigated under constant amplitude tensile fatigue loading. It is shown in this study that the notch sensitivity under fatigue loading is lower than that under static loading. It can be explained by the fact that the stress concentration is relaxed by the damage developed at the boundary of circular hole. To predict the fatigue strength at a specific cycle, the modified point stress criterion represented as a function of the geometry of the specimen(2R and W) is applied. It is found that the model used in the prediction of the notched tensile strength predicts the fatigue strength with reasonable accuracy. A model for predicting the fatigue life in the notched specimen, based on the S-$N_f$, curve in the smooth specimen, is suggested.

  • In this study, a series of fatigue tests was conducted to evaluate fatigue strength for the root gap difference with high strength steel with butt welded joints. A finite element analysis using effective notch stress method was also performed to compare effective notch factors each other with butt welded specimens made by copper backing. The results of fatigue tests were classified according to the root gap difference. Fatigue life of butt welded specimens is presented for determining the root gap of high strength steel with butt welded joints in terms of fatigue strength. Then effective notch stress was applied to interpret fatigue strength of butt welded specimen model which is reflected actual measured dimensions. As a result, fatigue strength of high strength steel with butt welded specimens is increased by root gap gets longer in length.
