  • Supersonic Dual Bell Nozzle (SDBN) is an altitude-adaptive propulsion nozzle achieved only by a nozzle wall inflection. In order to investigate the altitude adaptive capability and the effectiveness of this nozzle concept, the present study addresses a computational work of the flow through SDBN. Several types of the SDBNs are tested for a wide range of the pressure ratio which covers from an over-expended flow to a fully under-expended flow at the exit of the SDBN. Axisymmetric, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume differencing scheme. The present computational results reveal that the base nozzle length affects the shock wave system occurring inside SDBN. For a quit wide range of the pressure ratio the flow separation occurs at the nozzle inflection point. It is found that the maximum thrust coefficient is obtainable for the correct expansion state at the exit of SDBN.

  • Hysteresis phenomena in fluid flow systems are frequently encountered in many industrial and engineering applications and mainly appear during the transient processes of change of the pressure ratio. Shock-containing flow field in supersonic nozzles is typically subject to such hysteresis phenomena, but associated flow physics is not yet understood well. In the present study, experimental work has been carried out to investigate supersonic nozzle flows during the transient processes of change in the nozzle pressure ratio. Time-dependent surface wall pressures were measured by a multiple of pressure transducers and the flow field was visualized using a nano-spark Schlieren optical method. The results obtained show that the hysteresis phenomenon is strongly dependent on the nozzle geometry as well as the time scale of the change of pressure ratio.

  • In this paper, the radiated aerodynamic noise generated from sound sources of a nozzle inflow is quantitatively investigated and compared with experimental results of externally radiated noise. A high-resolution unsteady compressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique is used to accurately predict the internal and external flow of three types of nozzle shape. Through using the vortex sound source for sound sources, the geometry of nozzle neck is identified as most significant aerodynamic noise sources. For validation of quantitative analysis, the vortex sound source intensity of internal nozzle flow is compared with results of external radiated noise of calculation and experiment.

  • The effects of vortex generators, in the form of small delta-shaped tabs or thin tapes at an axi-symmetric supersonic nozzle exit, on the characteristics of supersonic jet flowfields are investigated by Schlieren images and Pitot-tube measurements. Small tabs as small as 1 % of the nozzle exit area can introduce streamwise vortices and produce a significant effect on the jet flowfield downstream of the nozzle. The effect is stronger for the cases of under-expanded jet than over- and perfect-expanded cases, introducing a larger flow entrainment. The effects of the angle of tabs with respect to the flow direction are also investigated, and for over-expanded jet cases, it is found that the tabs bended toward upstream can weaken the interaction strength and remove the Mach disc in the jet flowfield. Introduction of small proturbances inside the nozzle surface by attachment of thin tapes is also found to change the pressure distribution in the circumferential direction of the flowfield. Its effect is also found to be dependent on the jet expansion ratio.

  • Detailed flowfield resulting from the secondary sonic gas injection into a divergent section of supersonic conical nozzle has been numerically investigated. The three-dimensional flowfield associated with the bow-shock/boundary-layer interaction inside the nozzle has been solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with an algebraic and $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The numerical results have been compared with the experimental results for the identical flow conditions, and it is shown that the comparison is satisfactory Effects of different injection pressures of the secondary jet on the shock/boundary-layer interactions and the overall flow structure inside the nozzle have been investigated. The vortex structures behind the shock interaction and wall pressure variations have also been studied.

  • Effects of the nozzle wall angles on the supersonic flow field in a thrust optimized nozzle were numerically investigated. The combustor and operating condition of 30-tonf rocket engine was selected to study the optimum nozzle shape. The nozzle flow of combustion products was realized by the shifting equilibrium calculation for the propellant of kerosene-LOx. The change of nozzle wall angles induced different developing patterns of the internal and secondary shock wave. The optimum nozzle was obtained when the internal shock was in a specific position at the nozzle outlet. The nozzle wall angles of the optimum nozzle were very similar to those of the optimum nozzle which does not consider the shock wave.

  • Flow characteristics of dual bell nozzle with pintle were investigated. Thrust and thrust coefficient were compared with the pintle-bell nozzle of the same condition, and difference according to the pintle stroke was investigated. At stroke 0 mm, the thrust of the dual bell nozzle was about 13.18% higher than the bell nozzle, and when the pintle was backward, it was similar to the bell nozzle. The change in expansion ratio with stroke was considered to be more advantageous for a dual bell nozzle that performs altitude compensation through separation and transition.

  • During the operation of Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion Boiler, defluidization is mainly caused by the formation of clinker. The clinker is made of components of Si, Fe, Ca, etc. However, although the defluidization is widely researched, the major factor has not been validated yet clearly. In this study, in the view of the shape and the arrangement of nozzles at a distributor (type 1, type 2), the formation of clinker is examined by CFD calculations and an improved nozzle design is proposed.

  • For a design of rocket engine nozzle, chemical equilibrium analysis which shares the same numerical characteristics with frozen flow analysis can be used as an efficient design tool for predicting maximum thermodynamic performance of the nozzle. 10 this study, a chemical equilibrium flow analysis code was developed for the design of hydrocarbon fueled rocket engines. 10 oder to understand the thermochemical characteristics occurring in a nozzle through the expansion process, such as recombination of chemical components and the accompanying energy recovery, chemical equilibrium flow analysis was carried out for the KSR-III rocket engine nozzles together with frozen flow and non-equilibrium flow analyses. The performance evaluation based on the present KSR-III nozzle flow analyses has provided an understanding of the thermochemical process in the nozzle and additionally, it has confirmed that the newly designed nozzle shape modified to have a reduced exit area ratio is an adequate design for obtaining an increased ground thrust.
