Numerical Study of the effect of pintle shape on the thrust level (핀틀 형상이 추력 크기에 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • The effect of pintle shape on the thrust level of pintle-nozzle Solid Rocket Motor(PNSRM) was studied numerically using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model of Fluent. Mass flow rate of PNSRM was always less than theoretical value and the extent of decrease in mass flow rate grew in the large pintle because of increase in the relative boundary layer thickness between pintle body and nozzle wall. The bigger pintle size was, the more thrust of pintle tip pressure was obtained. Meanwhile the more thrust of nozzle and chamber pressure decreased. Hence, total thrust of big pintle was less than a small pintle under same throat area condition. Specific impulse was relatively flat for all pintle shape.

  • Unsteady numerical simulations of pintle nozzles were implemented for solid rocket thrust vector control. The variation of pintle location was considered using unsteady numerical techniques, and dynamic characteristics of various pintle models were investigated. In order to consider the variation of the pintle location, a moving mesh method was applied. The effects of shape and location of the pintle nozzle have been analytically investigated. And the results were compared with numerical results. The chamber pressure, mass flow and thrust are analyzed to take account dynamic characteristics of pintle performance.

  • In this paper, a small supersonic wind tunnel is designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The flow is visualized by means of a single pass Schlieren system. The supersonic cascade with 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested for various blade leading edge shapes and gaps between the nozzle and cascade. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions are observed.

  • This paper presents the numerical thermal analysis for regeneratively cooled rocket thrust chambers. An integrated numerical model incorporates computational fluid dynamics for the hot-gas thermal environment, and thermal analysis for the liner and coolant channels. The flow and temperature fields in rocket thrust chambers is assumed to be axisymmetric steady state which is presumed to the combustion liner. The heat flux computed from nozzle flow is used to predict the temperature distribution of the combustion liner As a result, we present the wall temperature of combustion liner and the temperature change of coolant.

  • The characteristic of air-assist spray injected into subsonic crossflow were studied experimentally. External-mixing air assist injector of Orifice nozzle with L/d of 3 were tested with various air-liquid ratio. Shadowgraph photography was performed for spray visualization and trajectory of spray measurements. The detailed spray structure was characterized in terms of SMD, velocity, and volume flux, using PDPA. Experimental results indicate that penetration length was increased and spray distribution was accelerated by increasing air-liquid ratio.

On the Reduction of a Ship Resistance by Attaching an Air Cavity to Its Flat Bottom (선저에 부착된 공기공동에 의한 선박의 저항감소에 관한 연구)

  • Extensive resistance tests for a passenger boat(now in service at Chung-Ju lake) have been performed in a towing tank to investigate the effect of an artificial air cavity attached to the hull bottom on the reduction of the ship resistance. The attached air cavity has been observed at various air sully rates, from which we have determined a proper shape of an air supply device. In order to prevent the supplied air from leaking near the bilge of the ship, longitudinal barrier strips have been attached to both sides of the device. The investigation on their effectiveness reveals that a cascade system of the air supply device reduces the resistance of the ship furthermore. Energy saving of more than 10% is achieved at the design speed in spite of the additional power necessary for the air supply.

  • In general liquid rocket nozzles are protected from hot combustion gas by regenerative cooling techniques. But due to the complexity of the cooling system, it causes increase of system cost and frequently source of the system malfunction. Recently, instead of regenerative cooing, ablative material are used to protect combustion chamber wall and nozzle. To determine the nozzle material erosion rate and erosion shape, more than 500 hot fire test were performed by using 100 lb thrust experimental liquid rocket. Test variable were propellant feed sequence, injector, position of igniter and liquid oxygen supply temperature.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of nozzle shapes on the performance and internal flow characteristics of a cross-flow type hydro turbine for wave power generation. The performance of the turbine is calculated with the variation of rotational speed for 4 types of the nozzle shape using a commercial CFD code. The results show that nozzle shape should be designed considering available head of the turbine. Best efficiencies of the turbine by 4 types of the nozzle shape do not change largely but overall performances varies mainly by the nozzle width. The output power of the cross-flow type hydro turbine changes considerably by the nozzle shape and a partial region of stage 2 in the runner blade passage produces maximum regional output power in comparison with the other runner blade passage areas.

  • Nozzle configurations and atmospheric conditions play a significant role in the infrared signature level of aircraft propulsion system. Various convergent nozzles of an unmanned aircraft under different atmospheric conditions are considered. An analysis of thermal flow field and nozzle surface temperature distribution is conducted using a compressible CFD code. It is shown that the IR level in rear direction is considerably reduced in deformed nozzles, whereas the IR level in adjacent azimuth angles is increased in aspect ratios around 6 due to the plume spreading effect caused by high aspect ratio of nozzles. In addition, an analysis of atmospheric transmissivity for various seasons and observation distance is conducted using the LOWTRAN 7 code and subsequently plume IR signature is calculated by considering atmospheric effects. It is shown that the IR signature is reduced significantly in summer season and near the band of carbon dioxide in case of relatively close distance.

  • 단일 충돌제트의 경우 충돌면에서의 열전달 효과는 제트 출구와 충돌면 사이의 간격, 노즐 형상에 따른 제트출구의 초기조건, Re$_{D}$수 변화와 충돌면의 형상이나 표면거칠기 등에 따라 변화하게 된다. 그러나 수직 충돌제트의 경우 정체영역에서의 국소적인 열전달 향상은 용이하나 반경 방향으로 열전달이 점차 감소하게 된다. 따라서 충돌면의 전반적인 열전달 향상을 위해서는 열전달이 정체점보다 상대적으로 낮은 영역에서 열전달 향상이 필요하다. 또한, 실제 적용시 충돌면의 형상이나 협소한 공간에서 노즐위치의 제약으로 인하여 충돌제트가 수직으로 분사되는 경우보다 경사진 제트가 더욱 많이 응용된다. 더욱이, 수직충돌제트가 사용되는 많은 상황에서도 주위의 다른 공기 흐름의 영향으로 인하여 실제 제트가 경사각을 갖고 분사되어진다 이러한 경사충돌제트의 중요성에도 불구하고 경사충돌제트에 대한 연구는 수직충돌제트에 대한 연구보다 상대적으로 적게 이루어져 왔다.
