  • The performance of a MEMS solid propellant thruster was predicted and analyzed through internal ballistics model and CFD analysis. The nozzle throat was $416{\mu}m$, and the area ratio of the nozzle was 1.85. As a result of the internal ballistics model, chamber pressure increased up to 197 bar and the maximum thrust was 3,836 mN. In CFD analysis, the chamber pressure of the internal ballistics model was applied as the operating pressure, and the CFD model was divided into an adiabatic and a heat loss model. As a result, the maximum thrust of the adiabatic model was 14.92% lower than that of the internal ballistics model, and the effect of heat loss was insignificant.

  • A engineering analysis has been conducted to study operating characteristics of a supersonic exhaust diffuser simulating high altitude atmosphere from a flow-developing point of view. Emphasis is placed in the detail flow structure resulting from several design- and operating- parameters of the diffuser such as the area ratios of a exhaust nozzle to the diffuser, the vacuum chamber size, and jet pressure.

  • Hydraulic dual chamber, as the simulator for a dual pulse rocket motor, was tested by a high pressure device with various orifice-hole size being applied. Pressure difference occurs between 1st chamber and 2nd chamber depending on area ratio of the orifice to nozzle throat. Studying a design configuration of the orifice is essential to the motor development because pressure difference severely affects the rocket motor performance. It is noticed in this study that energy dissipation is caused by the vortex flow originating from the orifice as the 2nd chamber is operated. The flow field is simulated by a commercial computational fluid dynamics program, ANSYS FLUENT V14.5.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the combustion characteristics of the liquid hydrocarbon fuel atomized by an ultrasonic oscillator. Configuration of the flame was caught by the high-speed camera, and images were analyzed in detail through a post-processing. In addition, the fuel consumption was measured using the balance during the combustion reaction. As a result, the consumption of atomized fuel increased with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas, but any correlation between the air/fuel ratio and carrier-gas flow-rate was not found. The variation of flame area was dependent on the fuel consumption and input power of the ultrasonic oscillator. FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analyses using the flame area were conducted in order to discuss flame flickering.

  • Traditional propellants which have a hypergolic characteristic have a high performance but also have disadvantages of toxicity and complex handling requirement. In order to replace these propellants, one of the alternatives is hydrogen peroxide which generates high temperature oxygen and water vapor after catalytic reaction. In this paper, autoignition characteristics of kerosene by decomposed hydrogen peroxide were investigated to perform fundamental research for designing a thruster using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene propellants. Contraction ratio, whether flame holder exists or not, and feeding pressure of propellants were selected as variables. From the experiments for different mixture ratio, we confirmed the ignition stability is strongly affected by a feeding pressure of propellants.

  • This paper deals with an acoustic model for a lean premixed gas turbine combustor composed of three stages: premixing chamber, nozzle and flame tube. Our model is given as an acoustic transfer function whose input is a heat release rate perturbation and output is a velocity perturbation at a flame location. We have shown that the resonance frequencies are functions of three round-trip frequencies of acoustic wave in each stage, and area ratios between stages. By analyzing poles of the acoustic transfer function, we could characterize resonant frequencies and their dependency on various system parameters of a combustor. It was found that our analytic findings match with existing numerical and experimental results in literature.

  • Dry ice snow jet was produced by high-pressure expansion of liquid carbon dioxide and subsequent acceleration by carrier gas flow. Removal mechanism for coating was not so different from that for contaminating particles on the surface. The removal of coating was quantitatively described by Hutchings' equation. The two parameters obtained from the plot, were used to predict the removal rate or the specific coating area removed by a unit mass of carbon dioxide. Their values also enhanced the reliability of the experimental data and enabled the experimental errors corrected. Hutchings' plots obtained with various values of either stand-off distance or nozzle length tends to meet apparently at a single unique point at which the scar-size enlargement by focusing jet plume was balanced with that by spreading it.

  • The effects of design parameters on the pellet transport rate in the ejector system which is widely used in the production processes of automotive parts were investigated experimentally. The primary nozzle geometry, the area ratio (R) of nozzle exit cross-sectional area to mixing chamber cross-sectional area and the distance (S) from primary nozzle exit to mixing chamber entrance were considered as the design parameters. The area ratios of the primary nozzle were varied from R=0.10 to R=0.25, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.55. The primary nozzle was positioned at the non-dimensional distance (S/D) of 1.30, 1.87, 2.44, 3.00 and 3.75, normalized using the mixing chamber diameter (D). The design parameters were determined to run with high efficiency by measuring the pellets transport rate. The geometry and the area ratio (R) of the primary nozzle had an effect on the pellet transport rate of the ejector system, and the area ratio of R=0.3 was carefully selected after taking the minimum fluidization velocity and transport rate of applied pellets into account. The higher pellet transport rate with the variation of the distance (S/D) was observed at S/D of 2.44.

  • The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the mixed flow and oxygen transfer characteristics of a horizontally injected aeration process using an annular nozzle ejector. The flow rate ratio, pressure ratio and ejector efficiency are calculated using the measured flow rate and pressure with the experimental parameters of the ejector pitch and primary flow rate. The visualization images of mixed flow issuing from the ejector are analyzed qualitatively, and the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficients are calculated using the measured dissolved oxygen concentration. The mixed flow behaves like a buoyancy jet or horizontal jet owing to the momentum of primary flow and air bubble size. The buoyancy force of the air bubble and the penetration of mixed flow are found to be important parameters for the oxygen transfer rate owing to the contact area and time of two phases.

  • This paper deals with supersonic vehicle. A supersonic vehicle has very complicated and high nonlinear thrust characteristics with respect to outer and inner environment during operation. For this reason, supersonic vehicle has many maneuver constraints and allows to operate within more narrow flight envelope. In this paper, trajectory optimization of supersonic vehicle is accomplished. The trajectory optimization problem is formulated by a discrete parameter optimization problem and the operation constraints are considered during trajectory optimization. It is shown that results of trajectory optimization give senses to fuel supply and nozzle throttle area control into effectiveness. Furthermore, general operation direction and its application for supersonic vehicles are discussed.
