  • The aged population increasing rapidly, the population rate of over 65 years old was over 7.5% in 2000 in Korea and it means that Korea is aging society. Increasing participation of woman in public affairs, becoming a nuclear family and increasing old aged people who want to stand alone brought about more the old households. But the aged welfare accommodation are still insufficient and more facilities accommodating the aged should be built. 80.5% of people according to poll by the Ministry of Health and Welfare responded the support of the aged is a serious problem in Korea. This result indicates the reality that the system for the aged are unsatisfied. Although these situations made a new concept of 'silver-town' of the welfare facility for the aged, it is under a transition in the aspect of the social system and the architectural aspect as well. This study will select good examples among facilities in the metropolitan area, analysis space and propose resonable program.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze both residential conditions and the resident impressions of the transition zone of central Daegu. The results drawn from a questionnaire survey of the residents are summarized as follows: 1) The proportion of people over the age of 60 living on a low income is high and consists mostly of retired citizens who have lived in the transition zone, in their own homes, for an extended length of time 2) The condition of infrastructure in the transition zone is very poor, however, despite the housing deterioration, the internal repair and maintenance of houses is more satisfactory than their external appearance. 3) Residential satisfaction received high ratings in every category except pollution and housing price. This response appears to stem from the easy commute of residents as well as the ready availability of facilities in the city center. 4) In terms of residential satisfaction, the residents can be divided into two groups. The first, with a high satisfaction rate, consists mainly of senior citizens who possess both personal homes and a stable living, having resided in the city center for most of their lives. The second, with a lower satisfaction rate, is composed mostly of younger residents who have lived temporarily in inexpensive rental homes. As a results, the residential area in the transition zone of central Daegu does not appear to be a problematic area like the slum of the West, but instead a stable settlement for its residents.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the regional disparity and its determinants of $CO_2$ emission from the residential energy consumption in China. This study examines factors that affect the $CO_2$ emission per capita using the panel model. The panel model was set by a balanced panel data for 30 provinces and for the period of 2006~2011. $CO_2$ emission per capita is used as the dependent variable and characteristics of the household and regional physical environmental factors are selected as the explanatory variables. The important findings can be summarized as follows. $CO_2$ emission per capita is influenced by the ratio of the graduate students, household size, the ratio of the old-aged, female economic participation rate. High residential density is negatively affected on $CO_2$ emission. The findings suggest that the effect of policies reducing $CO_2$ emission per capita may vary by characteristics of the household, energy sources and regional climate. The results of this empirical study give some implications to reduce the residential energy consumption in the era of climate change.

  • This study examines the characteristics of population ageing and the employment of aged workers in Seoul. Population indexes such as aged/child ratio and longevity degree are analyzed to identify the time-spatial changes and differentiation of population ageing by Gu. Job offerers, job seekers and employees related to the aged workers are also analyzed using data from Center of Job Placement for the Aged in Seoul. The results indicate that population ageing of Seoul has progressed faster than other regions in recent years. In addition, regional differences in tendency of population ageing is obvious even within Seoul. The percentage of unskilled laborer is much higher in Seoul compared with other regions. There is geographical differentiation in employment of aged workers among regions within Seoul. The employment opportunity of the aged is high in core economic areas of Seoul, while low in the outer residential area. This shows geographical mismatch between job offerers and seekers, which means that it is difficult for aged workers to get the jobs near to their residence. Accordingly, governmental support and intervention is needed considering their lower mobility.

  • Korean society in the 2000 has experienced new many social and spatial issues such as the process of neoliberalism and changes in urban and spatial policies, the development of information and communication technology and reconfiguration of informational social space, radically increasing foreign immigrants and transformation to multicultural society, global warming and environmental injustice, and these new issues have promoted development of social geography in Korea. In addition to a review on them, this paper provides a review on empirical researches on traditional issues which have been dealt with in social geography in the 2000 in Korea. Even though there have been numerous sub-issues, they can be divided into two categories: one is urban and communal social geography including urban housing and residential segregation, urban social problems such as poverty, crime, education, health care, social welfare, urban and rural community building, identity, sense of place, and social movement; the other is social geography of population and migration, including population movement, aged society and social welfare for elderly people, and foreign immigrants and formation of multicultural social space. As some difficult conditions such as path-dependent process of neoliberalism, transformation toward informational, aged, and multicultural society would continue, so social geography in Korea to tackle with these external conditions should deepen its theoretical insights and widen its research issues.
