Experiments have been peformed, using pure refrigerant R134a and a zeotropic refrigerant mixture R290/R600a(60%/40%) and their performances have been analyzed by the first and second laws(exergy method) of thermodynamics. From the experimental results, variations of compressor speed and air temperature have a great effect on the performance of the system. The sum of exergy losses in compressor and evaporator is about 60% of total exergy loss, using refrigerant R134a, so it is necessary to improve the performance of compressor and evaporator. According to the experimental results using refrigerant mixture of R290/R600a(60%/40%), the exergy losses in heat exchange processes are decreased but the exergy loss in throttling process is increased. The performance of the system has been improved by 20∼30% compared with that of R134a and exergy losses have been also reduced.

The organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) uses a kind of refrigerant as a working fluid that evaporates at relatively low temperature, as the Rankine Cycle uses superheated steam as the working fluid. A small scale ORC test bench was installed, and two different working fluids (R245fa and R134a) were injected into the test bench. The test bench was in operation with the two different working fluids under the same conditions. The effects against the system performance from the different working fluids were analysed, and root causes were identified. Other factors reflecting the power generation efficiency were also found. A conclusion was drawn, that R245fa makes the system perform better, than R134a.

A super-heat pump system composed of a suction line heat exchanger, low and high stage economizers, and a screw compressor is simulated to examine the energy performance and design options. CFC12, HCFC22, HFC134a, HCFC22/HCFC142b, HFC32/HFC134a, and HFC125/HFC134a are used as working fluids for comparison. The results indicate that the proposed system charged with appropriate mixtures is up to 33.4% more energy efficient than the normal system with CFC12. The performance of the super-heat pump system charged with mixtures was influenced by such factors as the temperature matching, heat source temperature difference, low stage economizer, and high stage economizer. The fluids with a larger liquid specific heat such as HFC134a would have more benefits when a suction line heat exchanger is installed. 40%HCFC22/60%HCFC142b mixture seems to be a good candidate to replace CFC12. On the other hand, 25%HFC32/75% HFC134a would be a good long term candidate to replace HCFC22.
This paper presents a pressure drop correlation for evaporation and condensation of alternative refrigerant with oil in micro-fin tubes. The correlation was developed from a data base consisting of oil-free pure and mixed refrigerants in micro-fin tube; Rl25 R134a. R32 R410a(R32/R125 50/50% mass), R22, R407c(R32/R125/R134a, 23/25/52% mass) and R32/R134a(25/75% mass). The micro-fin tube used in this paper had 60 0.2mm high fins with a 18 helix angle. The cross sectional flow area $(A_c)$ was $60.8 mm^2$ giving an equivalent smooth diameter$(D_e)$ of 8.8mm. The hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ was estimated to the 5.45mm. The new correlation was obtained by replacing the friction factor and the tube-diameter in Bo Pierre correlation by a friction factor derived from pressure drop data for a micro-fin tube and the hydraulic diameter, respectively. This correlation was also used to predict some pressure data with a lubricant after using a mixing viscosity rule of lubricants and refrigerants. As a result, the new correlation was also well predicted to the measured data within a mean deviation of 19.0%.

Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22, R134a, R407C, and R410A were measured for a horizontal plain tube. The test section was made of a copper tube of 8.8mm inner diameter and 1000mm length respectively. The refrigerant was heated by passing hot water through an annulus surrounding the test section. All tests were performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ with mass fluxes of 100~300 kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s. HTCs were measured by two methods: the direct wall temperature measurement method and the indirect Wilson plot method. Experimental results showed that the Wilson plot method was affected greatly by the external test conditions and yielded inconsistent results. For the mass flux of 100kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs were almost constant regardless of the quality for a given refrigerant HTCs of R134a and R407C were similar to those of R22 while those of R410A were 60% higher than those of R22. For the mass fluxes of 200 and 300kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs of R407C were almost the same as those of R22, while HTCs of R134a and R410A were 12-13% and 20~23% higher than those of R22 respectively. For pure refrigerant, Shah\`s correlation yielded a good agreement with the measured data both qualitatively and quantitatively.

In this study, experiments were carried out to provide nucleate pool boiling heat transfer data for a plain tube and 4 different low fin tubes employing 2 refrigerant mixtures of R410A, R407C, and 12 pure fluids. Low fin tubes were machined on a 19.05mm nominal outside diameter copper block according to the manufacturer's low fin tube specifications. Cartridge heaters were used to generate uniform heat flux on the tubes. For all refrigerants, heat flux varied from 10㎾/$\m^2$ to 80㎾/$\m^2$. It is found that heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of high vapor pressure refrigerants are usually higher than those of low pressure fluids. On the other hand, the fin effect was more prominent with low pressure refrigerants than with high pressure ones. Optimum fin density as well as the increase in heat transfer coefficient with the increase in fin density were found to be strongly fluid dependent. HTCs of Rl23, a low pressure alternative refrigerant, were similar to those of Rll while HTCs of R134a, an intermediate pressure alternative refrigerant, were roughly 20% higher than those of Rl2. Finally, HTCs of R32, R125, R143a, and R410A were all higher than those of R22 by 30~50%.

Numerical simulation on the two-stage centrifugal compressor with Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser LSVD) for HFC-134a Turbo-chiller was performed using a commercial code. The comparative study with experimental results from other compressor was also investigated to testify the simulation schemes. The numerical analysis was separately simulated for each stage of the compressor and the effect of impeller-diffuser flow interaction was considered. Setting angle of the diffuser vane changed in the range of 15 deg. and the effects on its variation were discussed in detail including the flow analysis in the passage of the compressor. The vane setting angle obtained from the preliminary design was slightly adjusted to the optimal value by the performance enhancement in terms of pressure recovery and flow characteristics.

Two-phase flow pattern data during horizontal in-tube flow boiling are presented for pure and mixed refrigerants of R134a and Rl23, The flow pattern is observed through tubular sight glasses located at inlet and outlet of the test section, which is made of a stainless steel tube, 2m long with 10mm I.D., 1.5mm wall thickness. The obtained results are compared with the available various correlations for flow pattern. The flow pattern map of Hashizume was in good agreement with the present data except the region of low mass velocity. Weisman flow pattern map was also known to satisfactorily predict data for refrigerants in the region of annular flow. In this study, the flow pattern are simply classified into two groups; stratified(including intermittent, stratified and stratified-wavy) flow and annular flow. The transition quality from stratified to annular flow was obtained by modifying the liquid Froude number.
R134a is considered as an alternative refrigerant to R22 for air conditioners. An experimental investigation was made to study the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop for R134a flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning units. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ and refrigerant mass fluxes of $150,\;200,\;and\;250\;kg/m^{2}s$. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature or $35^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that air velocity decreased by 5.9% is needed for R134a than that of R22 while pressure drop for R134a was $18.1{\sim}20.4%$ higher than that of R22 for the degree of subcooling $5^{\circ}C$. The results are useful in designing more compact and effective condensers for various refrigeration and air conditioning systems using refrigerant R134a.
This study investigates alternative refrigerants and refrigerant oils as well as the tendency of protecting the global environment in view of automobile air-conditioning systems. Since decades, the R12 refrigerant is not used in automobile air-conditioners because of the ozone depletion potential (ODP) problem, and for the last 20 years, the ODP-free R134a refrigerant is leading the new automotive air-conditioning market. However, owing to its high global warming potential (GWP), the R134a refrigerant use in automobile air-conditioning system is also prohibited by law, and alternative refrigerants with a low GWP need to be proposed. Therefore, recently, the application of R1234yf, R152a, or other alternative refrigerants has started worldwide. By contrast, natural refrigerant R744 was introduced in the market several years ago by VDA (Verband Der Automobilindustrie), which is a German association in the automotive industry. This study also deals with refrigerant oils. For a long time, polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil has been traditionally used with automobile air-conditioners, and polyolester (POE) oil is suitable for HEV, PHEV, and EV air-conditioning systems, where it is used by the electrically driven compressor owing to its excellent electrical insulation properties. Finally, PAG is an excellent lubricant for all the R134a, R152a, R1234yf, and R744 refrigerants, and has the advantage that it can be applied rapidly to alternative refrigerant air-conditioning systems.
