  • Image segmentation is an essential technique of image analysis. In spite of the issues in contour initialization and boundary concavities, active contour models(snakes) are popular and successful methods for the segmentation. In this paper, we present a new active contour model, GGF snake, for segmentation of endoscopic image. The GGF snake is less sensitive to contour initialization and ensures high accuracy, large capture range, and fast CPU time for computing external force. It was observed that the GGF snake produced more reasonable results in various image types, such as simple synthetic images, commercial digital camera images, and endoscopic images than previous snakes did.

  • Neurilemmoma is rare benign tumor originating from the Schwann cell of the nerve sheath. Intrabronchial neurilemmoma are extremely rare and only few cases have been reported previously in Korea. Neurilemmoma at all ages but are most common in persons between the ages of 20 and 50 years. It affects the head, neck, flexor regions of the extremities. Neurilemmoma was confirmed histologically because of the presence of Verocay bodies, Antoni A or B tissue pattern and of S-100 protein. We report two cases of intrabronchial neurilemmoma with chronic coughing and nonspecific radiologic findings.

  • Cryosurgery is a safe method for palliation of endobronchial malignancies causing airway obstruction. Due to its simplicity and effectiveness for controlling bleeding, endobronchial cryosurgery is considered to be a good method that is clinically applicable to a malignant endobronchial tumor. In cases with stenosis caused by an endoluminal tumor, cryo-recanalization with a cryoprobe was immediately effective in most of the patients. A novel technique described by Hetzel in 2004 to achieve rapid recanalization of central airway obstruction with endobronchial cryoprobe. Cryorecanalization technique is feasible and offers many advantages in the interventional therapy of malignant intraluminal tumors of the respiratory tract.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze Deep Learning (DL) and Digital Image Processing (DIP) techniques using the results of the glottis segmentation of the two methods followed by the quantification of the asymmetric degree of the vocal cord mucosa. The data consists of 40 normal and abnormal images. The DL model is based on Deeplab V3 architecture, and the Canny edge detector algorithm and morphological operations are used for the DIP technique. According to the segmentation results, the average accuracy of the DL model and the DIP was 97.5% and 94.7% respectively. The quantification results showed high correlation coefficients for both the DL experiment (r=0.8512, p<0.0001) and the DIP experiment (r=0.7784, p<0.0001). In the conclusion, the DL model showed relatively higher segmentation accuracy than the DIP. In this paper, we propose the clinical applicability of this technique applying the segmentation and asymmetric quantification algorithm to the glottal area in the laryngoscopic images.

  • A capsule endoscopy is a medical device that can capture an entire digestive organ from the esophagus to the anus at one time. It produces a vast amount of images consisted of about 8~12 hours in length and more than 50,000 frames on a single examination. However, since the analysis of endoscopic images is performed manually by a medical imaging specialist, the automation requirements of the analysis are increasing to assist diagnosis of the disease in the image. Among them, this study focused on automatic detection of polyp images. A polyp is a protruding lesion that can be found in the gastrointestinal tract. In this paper, we propose a weighted-image generation method to enhance the polyp image learning by multi-scale analysis. It is a way to extract the suspicious region of the polyp through the multi-scale analysis and combine it with the original image to generate a weighted image, that can enhance the polyp image learning. We experimented with SVM and RF which is one of the machine learning methods for 452 pieces of collected data. The F1-score of detecting the polyp with only original images was 89.3%, but when combined with the weighted images generated by the proposed method, the F1-score was improved to about 93.1%.

  • Background: Recent advance in video technology, endoscopic equipments, and surgical techniques have expanded the use of thoracoscopy from diagnosis of the pleural diseases to treatment of the various intrathoracic diseases. Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery(VATS) is a pretty new and fascinating thoracic surgical modality, and so we present our early VATS resuls. Methods: Using Video Thoracoscopic techniques in 30 patients for 10 months from July 1992 to April 1993, we had performed a variety of procedures. These incuded (1) bleb resections in 18 patients (19 cases), (2) mediastinal tumor excision in 4, (3) lung biopsies for parenchymal pulmonary disease in 3, (4) pleural biopasies in 3, (5) pleural tumor excision in 1, (6) and pleuropericardial window in 1. Results: There were no mortality associated with the procedures. We had minor 8 complications; prolonged air leak in 3 patients, prolonged serous drainage in 2, recurrence of pneumothorax in 1, Honer's syndrome in 1, and hoarseness in 1 patient. None of the 30 patients had reverted to the conventional full thoracotomies. Mean postoperative hospital stay of non-complicated pneumothoraces was about 5 days, which was a little shorter than conventional thoracotomy group. Conclusion: Though we had somewhat higher postoperative complication rate due to lack of experiences in the begining, we were able to convince that VATS had benifical value for patients; lesser postoperative pain, shorter hospitalization, quicker recovery time, and cosmetically superior scar. The role of VATS can be expanded to the diagnosis and treatment of various thoracic diseases, even to the cardiovascular diseases, with satisfactory outcome and less postoperative morbidity.

  • For the treatment of deep extensive abscess, the incision and drainage is necessary. But in order to make a thorough incisional drainage we can't avoid the skin incision enlarged. Even if the incision is enlarged, it is often impossible to obtain a satisfactory view of operative field. Also, the additional damage to surrounding normal tissue during operation and the scars made by large incision may be problematic. To solve these problems, we performed the endoscopic treatment for extensive deep abscesses occurred in hematoma after rupture of gastrocnemius muscle and obtained the satisfactory results. It has not been previously described, so we report it with a review of the literature.

  • Recent advances in technology of medical image have made surgical simulation that is helpful to diagnosis, operation plan, or education. Improving and enhancing the medical imaging have led to the availability of high definition images and three-dimensional (3D) visualization, it allows a better understanding in the surgical and educational field. The Real human field of view is stereoscopic. Therefore, with just 2D images, stereoscopic reconstruction process through the surgeon's head, is necessary. To reduce these process, 3D images have been used. 3D images enhanced 3D visualization, it provides significantly shorter time for surgeon for judgment in complex situations. Based on 3D image data set, virtual medical simulations, such as virtual endoscopy, surgical planning, and real-time interaction, have become possible. This article describes principles and recent applications of newer imaging techniques and special attention is directed towards medical 3D reconstruction techniques. Recent advances in technology of CT, MR and other imaging modalities has resulted in exciting new solutions and possibilities of shoulder imaging. Especially, three-dimensional (3D) images derived from medical devices provides advanced information.
