Optimal Manufacturing of Composite Wing Ribs in Solar-Powered UAVs: A Study (태양광 무인기 복합재 윙 리브 최적 제작 연구)

  • In our preceding study, we reported that the use of light, composite-material wings in long-endurance Solar-Powered UAVs is a critical factor. Ribs are critical components of wings, which prevent buckling and torsion of the wing skin. This study was undertaken to design and manufacture optimal composite ribs. The ribs were manufactured by applying laminated-layer patterns and shapes, considering the anisotropic properties of the composite material. Through the finite element analysis using the MSC Patran/Nastran, the maximum load and the displacement shape were identified. Based on the study results measured by structural tests, we present an optimal design of ribs.

Method to Simulate the Automatic Processing of Large Aircraft Wing Ribs (대형항공기 날개 리브 가공을 위한 자동화 공정 시뮬레이션)

  • In this study, the automatic processing of the wing ribs of large aircraft was simulated. Specifically, in the simulation for the automatic processing of the fly ribs, the process of the automated loading device with a robot was examined, along with the wing rib processing and manufacturing automation processes. Moreover, the process time, corresponding to all the stages in the wing rib processing, was calculated. The results pertaining to the machining and manufacturing times of 34 wing ribs (Nos. 1-17), as obtained through the proposed simulation approach, indicated that the total machining time for the left and right wing ribs and rib guns was 537.7 h. The production time was calculated as 1,117.4 h. It is considered that the processing of the wing ribs of large aircraft can be automated in a factory, based on the results of the proposed simulation process.

  • In this study, the flutter analysis for a rectangular box wing and an actual fighter wing with composite shin, aluminum spar and aluminum rib has been conducted. A conservative 3D wing-box model of an actual wing is modeled by MSC/PATRAN and the corresponding free vibration analysis has been performed by MSC/NASTRAN. The finite elements of membrane, rod and shear panel are used. Using the practical ply angles, various composite laminates are composed and analysed. The DLM code which is linear aerodynamic theory in frequency domain is applied to calculate unsteady aerodynamic pressure in subsonic flow region and the V-g and p-k methods are applied to obtain the solution of aeroelastic governing equation in frequency domain.

  • In this paper, development of optimal design tools for wing structure is described including multi load spectra condition and fatigue analysis. Two dimensional CFD result are used for calculating aerodynamic force. Design variables are composed of a number of rib and spar, positions, and thickness of each structural member. The mission profile for fatigue analysis is composed based upon the results of CFD analysis, the flight-by-flight spectra method, the excessive curves for gust loads. Minor's rule was used to deal with multi-load condition. Stress analysis and fatigue analysis are performed to calculate objective functions. Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) algorithm was used to apply to problems which have dozens of design variables.

  • Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, well known high specific strength and high specific stiffness, have been widely used in the aircraft industry. Mostly the CFRP structure is fabricated by lamination of carbon fiber or carbon prepreg, which has major disadvantage called delamination. Delamination is usually produced due to absence of the through-thickness direction fiber. In this study, three-dimensional carbon preform woven in three directions is used for fabrication of aircraft wing unit structure, a part of repeated structure in aircraft wing. The unit structure include skin, stringer and rib were prepared by resin transfer molding method. After, the 3D structure was compared with laminate structure through compression test. The results show that 3D structure is not only effective to prevent delamination but improved the mechanical strength. Therefore, the 3d preform structure is expected to be used in various fields requiring delamination prevention, especially in the aircraft industry.

  • With the financial sponsorship of FKI and six other companies, the design and construction of the human powered aircraft Sky Runner has been begun to design in December of 2008. And it flew in late December of 2009. The original design configuration was continuously modified in response to test results as a 30.36m span, $35.25m^2$ wing area, 26.0 aspect ratio and 39.8kg of empty weight. Although, we have made only 150m flight flying a few seconds so far however, it will contribute to the research of ultra-light and long duration flying planes. A brief review of some design features, wing layout, prop design, fabrication and flight test results are presented.
