  • Experiments have been performed using two-color PIV in hydrogen non-premixed flames with various conditions of coaxial air, which was classified into three cases with/without reaction. Mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress were analyzed using flow fields from PIV measurement First, the similarity of pure jet had a good agreement with previous results of other researchers. It was found that the decay of centerline velocity was proportional to $x^{-1}$ in coaxial air conditions. By normalizing axial distance with effective jet diameter defined by effective density, the data of centerline velocity collapsed a single line. And the radial profiles of mean velocity showed that they didn't become self-similar because the curves differed from each other as coaxial air velocity increased at fixed fuel velocity. Also, turbulence intensity became self-similar further downstream than mean velocity.

  • This research has been proceeded over the transition region(H/B=10) of two-dimensional impinging air jet system, in which square rods has been set up in front of heating surface in order to increase heat transfer. The objective of this research was to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer and air flow, in cases the clearance from rods to heating surface(C=1, 2, 4, 6 mm) and the width of rods(W=4, 6, 8 mm) changed. And this research compared the above with the experimentation without rods. As result, heat transfer performance was best under the condition of C=1 mm, and as the width is 8 mm, it is largely influenced by eddies and acceleration in case width of rods changed.

  • The annular and coaxial swirl flows between which LPG is supplied was selected to study the swirling flames in double co-swirl flows. The objective of this study is to research into the effects of double co-swirl flow conditions on the stability limit, the reverse flow boundary, and the time mean temperature distributions of the swirling flames. The increase of swirl intensity of axial flow makes the stability limit decrease, but the annular swirl flow (SM>0.5) makes stability and swirl intensity of axial flow increase, And the existence of axial swirl flow makes flame intensive and small in size, and this may be applicable to the design of high power compact combustor.

  • This study was focused on the examination of the flame structure and the combustion characteristics of diffusion flame which was formed the turbulent shear flow of a double coaxial air jet system. The shear flow was formed by the difference velocity of surrounding air jet(U$\_$s/) and center air jet (U$\_$c/). So experimental condition was divided S-type flame (.lambda. > 1) and C-type flame (.lambda. < 1) by velocity ratio .lambda. (=U$\_$s//U$\_$c/). For examination of the flame structure and the combustion characteristics in diffusion flame, coherent structure was observed in flame by schlieren photograph method. We measured fluctuating temperature and ion current simultaneously and accomplished the statistical analysis of its. According to schlieren photograph, the flame was stabilized in the rim of the direction of lower velocity air jet, coherent eddy was produced and developed by higher velocity air jet. The statistical data of fluctuating temperature and ion current was indicated that reaction was dominated by higher velocity air jet. The mixing state of burnt gas and non-burnt gas was distributed the wide area at Z = 100 mm of C-type flame.

  • The objective of the study was to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer and flow in 2-dimensional impinging air jet system, in which trapezoid rods have been set up in front of impinging plate in order to increase heat transfer. Experiments were carried out first using without the rods to establish the baseline heat transfer performance. And this result compared with the experimentation with rods. When rods are installed in front of the impinging plate, the acceleration of the flow and the eddies due to the rods seem to contribute to the heat transfer enhancement. Heat transfer performance was best under the condition of C=1 n and as the pitch is 30 mm. In this case, maximum rate of heat transfer augmentation is about 1.62 times greater compared to that without trapezoid rods.

  • The study on the classification of the Chindo Islands ascidians was conducted by collecting the specimens from five localities in July and November, 1994 and the previous records. The ascidians were classified into 7 families, 11 genera and 16 species. They are all known species in Korean waters. Among them nine species were found to be new to the Chindo Is. From the standpoint of water forms, the composition of the ascidians from Chindo Is. is made up of three elements, viz., temperate (8species, 50%), temperature-tropical (7 species, 44%) and tropical (1 species, 6%) . A boreal water species and boreal-temperature species were not found . It may be attributable to the fact that the water of this area is warm because of Kuroshio Water Current.

  • This is the first attempt to produce simultaneous surface current field from satellite altimeter data for the entire East Sea and to provide surface current information to users with formal description. It is possible to estimate surface geostrophic current field in near real-time because satellite altimeters and coastal tide gauges supply sea level data for the whole East Sea. Strength and location of the major currents and meso-scale eddies can be identified from the estimated surface geostrophic current field. The mean locations of major surface currents were explicated relative to topographic, ocean-surface and undersea features with schematic representation of surface circulation. In order to demonstrate the practical use of this surface current information, exemplary descriptions of annual, seasonal and monthly mean surface geostrophic current distributions were presented. In order to objectively classify surface circulation patterns in the East Sea, empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was performed on the estimated 16-year (1993-2008) surface current data. The first mode was associated with intensification or weakening of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) flowing northward along the east coast of Korea and of the anti-cyclonic circulation southwest of Yamato Basin. The second mode was associated with meandering paths of the EKWC in the southern East Sea with wavelength of 300 km. The first and second modes had inter-annual variations. The East Sea surface circulation was classified as inertial boundary current pattern, Tsushima Warm Current pattern, meandering pattern, and Offshore Branch pattern by the time coefficient of the first two EOF modes.

  • In this study, we classified observed fog events in the Middle Nakdong River near Gumi and analyzed the meteorological characteristics before and after the fog formation. The observation was performed from 2013 to 2015 using visibility meter. A total of 74 fog events were observed and most of them were classified as steam fog. The duration of observed steam fogs was longer than that of typical inland fogs because the nocturnal evaporation from the water surface was enhanced by the topographical characteristics. In order to analyze the effect of evaporation from the stream on the fog duration, the evaporation was estimated using the Penman-Monteith and the Bulk aerodynamic methods. The estimated evaporation by the Bulk method was similar to the actual evaporation from the water surface. Therefore, the Bulk method is suitable for estimating the evaporation from water surface. The evaporation amount, estimated by using the Bulk method was higher on fog days than non-fog days at 06 LST and 07 LST. The added evaporation of fog days released latent heat to the atmosphere and provided energy to maintain the turbulence in the fog. This phenomenon was confirmed by the increase of wind speed, temperature and turbulent kinetic energy within the fog.

  • In general, an influenced area of merging section is defined as 500 m including 100 m upstream and 400 m downstream. However, from an observation of the actual traffic flow, it is found that merging effect influences more on downstream than upstream. In this study, an influenced area of merging section on freeway is analyzed by using turbulence which is defined as conflicts between vehicles. In order to overcome the limits of existing traffic flow detection system established with intervals of about 500 m, this study uses raw data collected from the detectors which are established in entrance ramps with similar road conditions. To divide data of each point into similar road conditions, the data of total 72 hours is sorted by Level of Service. An influenced area analyzed by standard deviation of speed is 700 m section of highway, including 300 m upstream and 400 m downstream, for both right and left ramps. It is the result including upstream 200 m more than previous studies.

  • We carried out a study on the marine environment, such as water temperature, salinity, density and chlorophyll ${\alpha}$, and the distribution of phytoplankton community, such as species composition, dominant species and standing crops in the Southwestern Sea of Korea during early summer 2005. According to the analysis of a T-S diagram, three characteristics of water masses were identified. We classified them into Korean and Chinese coastal water, the cold water and the oceanic water. The first was characterized by high temperature and low salinity in the surface layer influenced by river run offs from China and Korea, the second by low temperature and salinity in bottom layer originated from the bottom cold water of the Yellow Sea, and the third by high temperature and high salinity influenced by Tsushima warm currents. The internal discontinuous layer among them was formed at the intermediate depth (about $10{\sim}20\;m$ layer). And the thermal front appeared in the central parts between Tsushima warm currents and Korean and Chinese coastal waters in the Southwestern Sea of Korea. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration was high values in the Korean coastal waters and sub-surface layers. But It was low concentration in the Tsushima warm currents regions. The $Chl-{\alpha}$ maximum layers appeared in the sub-surface layer below thermocline. The phytoplankton community in the surface and stratified layers was composed of a total of 40 species belonging to 26 genera. Dominant species were 2 diatoms, Paralia sulcata, Skeletonema costatum and a dinoflagellate, Scripsiella trochoidea. Standing crops of phytoplankton in the surface layer were very low with cell density ranging from 5 to $3.8\;{\times}\;10^3\;cells/L$. Diatoms were controlled by the expanded low salinity coastal waters of the low salinity with high concentrations of nutrients. Otherwise phytoflagellates were dominant in the high temperature regions where the Tsushima warm currents approches the Southwestern Sea of Korea in early summer.
