  • The near field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distribution is investigated experimentally. Experiments were carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements were undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distribution of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stress. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend at the upstream of the exit. Three pipes were used for this study: A straight pipe, 90 and 160 degree-bended pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the pipe exit, the secondary flow through the bend and the mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes.

  • Understanding of the flow past a bluff body close to a moving ground is very important in automobile and aeronautical fields because of aerodynamic characteristic and instability induced by unsteady vortex shedding. The passive control method that mounted the vertical and horizontal plates at the lower surface of the cylinder is studied to suppress the unsteady oscillation motion. When the grounds moves, the diminish of the shear layer on the ground promotes the interaction between the lower and the upper separated shear layers of the cylinder, hence vortex shedding occurs at the lower gap height than the stationary ground.

  • Incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $\varepsilon{-SST}$ turbulence model are adopted for the investigation of the flow fields between the square cylinder and the ground. When the grounds moves, the diminish of the shear layer intensity on the ground promotes the interaction between the lower and the upper separated shear layer of the cylinder. Hence vortex shedding occurs at the lower gap height than stationary ground. In the moving ground, the secondary shedding frequency disappears due to the absence of the separation bubble on the ground which exists in the stationary ground. In addition, the shedding frequency and aerodynamic coefficients in the moving ground become higher than those of the stationary ground.

  • The three-dimensional turbulent flow in curved pipes susceptible to flow-accelerated corrosion has been analyzed numerically to predict the pressure and shear stress distributions on the inner surface of the pipes. The analysis employs the body-fitted non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system and a standard $ {\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function method. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations. The convection term is approximated by a high-resolution and bounded discretization scheme. The cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is prevented by the application of a modified version of momentum interpolation scheme. The SIMPLE algorithm is employed for the pressure and velocity coupling. The numerical calculations have been performed for two curved pipes with different bend angles and curvature radii, and discussions have been made on the distributions of the primary and secondary flow velocities, pressure and shear stress on the inner surface of the pipe to examine applicability of the present analysis method. As the result it is seen that the method is effective to predict the susceptible systems or their local areas where the fluid velocity or local turbulence is so high that the structural integrity can be threatened by wall thinning degradation due to flow-accelerated corrosion.

  • The flowfield generated by a 2-D rotating cylinder on a plane moving at freestream velocity was experimentally investigated in a wind tunnel to simulate aerodynamic characteristics of rotating wheels of an automobile. In the flowfield around a rotating cylinder at 3*10$^{3}$ < Re$_{d}$<8*10$^{3}$, unique mean flow and turbulence characteristics were confirmed by hot-wire measurements as well as frequency analysis, which was supported by flow visualization. In the vicinity of a rotating cylinder, a unique turbulence structure on .root.over bar u'$^{2}$ profiles was formed in hump-like shape at 1 < y/d < 3. A peak frequency which characterized the effect of a rotating cylinder had the same value of the rotation rate of a cylinder. In case of cylinder rotation, the depths of mean velocity -defect and turbulent-shear regions were thickened by 20-40% at 0 < x/d < 10 compared with the case of cylinder stationary. Far downstream beyond x/d > 10, the flowfield generated by a rotating cylinder showed self-similarity in the profiles of mean velocity and turbulence quantities. The effect of a rotating cylinder was independent of its rotation rate and Reynolds number in the measurement range.

  • An experimental research has been carried out for flow visualizations of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction control utilizing the aeroelastic flaps, Spark shadowgraphs, kerosene-lampblack tracings for the surface streakline pattern, and interference fringe patterns over a thin oil-film applied at the downstream of the shock interactions have been obtained , Effects of variation of the shapes and thicknesses of the flaps are tested, and all the results are compared to the solid-wall reference case without flow-control mechanism , From the qualitative observation of the variation of skin friction utilizing the interference fringe patterns over the silicone oil-film, a strong spanwise variation of the skin friction with a narrow and long region of separation has been noticed near the centerline behind the shock structure, which phenomenon demonstrate a strong three-dimensionality of the shock interaction flows, Influence of the shape of the cavity under the flaps to the shock interaction is also tested, and it is observed that the shape of the cavity is not negligible.

  • Measurements of mean velocity and turbulence characteristics are obtained with a linearized constant temperature hot-wire anemometer in a two-dimensional turbulent jet discharging parallel to a flate. Wall static pressure distribution is also measure. The Reynolds number based on the jet nozzle width (D) is about 42,000 and the step height is 2.5D. The reattachment length is found to be 7.5D by using both wool tuft and oil methods. Upstream of the reattachment point, there exist double coherent structures and mean velocity, Reynolds stresses and triple product profiles are asymmetric about jet center line due to the influence of streamline curvature and recirculating flow region. Near the reattachment point, wall static pressure and turbulence quantities change its shape rapidly because of the large eddies by the solid wall. Especially, turbulence intensity has a maximum value in the reattachment regin, then decreases slowly in the redeveloping wall jet ragion. Downstream of X/D=14, a single large scale eddy structure is formed. Far downstream affer the reattachment(X/D.geq.18) mean velocity profile, the decay of maximum velocity and the variation of jet half width are nearly similar to those of plane wall jet, but the Reynolds stresses are higher than those of the latter.

  • In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flows in the exit region connected to the square-sectional $180^{\circ}$curved duct was investigated experimentally. The experimental study for air flows was conducted to measure velocity profiles, shear stress distributions by using the Laser Doppler Velocimetry(L.D.V) system with the data acquisition and processing system of Rotating Machinery Resolver(R.M.R) and PHASE software. The results obtained from the experimentation were summarized as follows : The critical Reynolds number for a change from transitional oscillatory flow to turbulent oscillatory flow was about 75,000 in the 90 region of dimensionless axial position (x/Dh) which was considered as a fully developed flow region. In the turbulent oscillatory flow, velocity profiles of the inflow period in the entrance region were gradually developed, but those of the outflow period were not changed nearly. Shear stress distributions of turbulent oscillatory flow was gradually increased as the flow proceeds to downstream.
