  • The flamelet concept has been widely applied to numerically simulate complex phenomena occurred in nonpremixed turbulent flames last two decades, and recently broadened successfully the applicable capabilities to various combustion problems from simple laboratory flames to gas turbine engine, diesel spray combustion and partially premixed flames. The paper is focused on brief review of recently noticeable work related to flamelet modeling, which includes Lagrangian flamelet approach, RIF concept as well as steady flamelet approach. The limitation of steady flamelet assumption, the effect of transient behavior of flamelets, and the effect of spray vaporization on PDF model have been discussed.

  • Turbulent nonpremixed $H_2$-air jet flames are numerically investigated using the joint PDF model. The reaction progress variable is derived by assuming the radicals 0, H, and OH to be in partial equilibrium and additional species $HO_2$ and $H_2O_2$ in steady state. The model is extended to npnadiabatic flame by introducing additional variable for the transport of enthalpy and radiative source term is calculated using a local, geometry independent model. In terms of flame structure and NO formation, the predicted results are favorably agreed with experimental data. The effects of nonequilibrium chemistry and radiative heat loss on the thermal NO formation are discussed in detail.

  • An experiment in a turbulent non-premixed flat flame was carried out in order to investigate the effect of swirl number on the flow and combustion characteristics. First. stream lines and velocity distribution in the flow field were obtained using PIV method. In contrast with the axial flow without swirl, highly swirled air induced stream lines along the burner tile. and backward flow was caused by recirculation in the center zone of the flow field. In the combustion. the flame with swirled air also became flat and stable along the burner tile with increment of the swirl number. Flame structure by measuring OH and CH radicals intensity and by calculating Damkohler number(Da) and turbulence Reynolds number(Re$_{T}$) was examined. It appeared to be comprised in the wrinkled laminar-flame regime. Backward flow by recirculation of the burned gas decreased the flame temperature and emissions concentrations as NO and CO. Consequently, the stable flat flame with low NO concentration was achieved.d.

  • The flame lengths and NOx emission characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO turbulent non-premixed jet flames were investigated. The flame length which is the main parameter governs NOx emission was studied for various syngas compositions. The flame length was compared with previous correlation between Froude number and flame height and it shows that they have good agreements. It was confirmed that the turbulent jet flames herein investigated are in the region of buoyancy-momentum transition. NOx emission was reduced with increased Reynolds number and CO contents in syngas fuel and with decreased fuel nozzle diameter which is attributed by decreased flame residence time. Previous EINOx scaling based on flame residence time of $L_f^3/(d_f^2U_f)$ satisfies only the jet flame in momentum-dominated region, not buoyancy-momentum transition region. The simplified flame residence time ($L_f/U_f$) was adopted in modified EINOx scaling. The modified scaling satisfies the jet flames not only in momentum-dominated region but in buoyancy-momentum transition region. The scaling is also satisfied with $H_2$/CO syngas jet flames.
