In this study, the modification of turbulent boundary layer flow by local wall vibration is investigated. The wall is locally vibrated using a wall deformation actuator, which moves up and down at the frequencies of 100Hz and 50Hz. Simultaneous measurements of the streamwise velocities in the spanwise direction are performed at several wall-normal and streamwise locations using an in-house multi-channel hot wire anemometer and a spanwise hot-wire-probe rake. The mean velocity is reduced in most places due to the wall vibration and its reduced amount becomes small as flow goes downstream. Interestingly, the mean velocity is found to increase very near the wall and near the actuator. This is due to the motion induced by the streamwise vortices which are generated by the downward motion of the actuator. In case of the streamwise velocity fluctuations, their magnitude increases as compared to the unperturbed turbulent boundary layer, and the increased amount becomes small as the flow moves downstream. The modified flow field at the forcing frequency of 50Hz is not much different from that of 100Hz, except the reduced amount of modification.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of periodic blowing and suction on a turbulent boundary layer. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to probe the characteristics of the flow. The local forcing was introduced to the boundary layer via a sinusoidally-oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot. Three forcing frequencies (f$^{+}$=0.044, 0.066 and 0.088) with a fixed forcing amplitude (A$^{+}$=0.6) were employed at $Re_{=690. The effect of the forcing angles ($\alpha$=60$^{\circ}$ , 90$^{\circ}$ and 120$^{\circ}$ ) was investigated under the fixed forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088). The PIV results showed that the wall region velocity decreases on imposition of the local forcing. Inspection of phase-averaged velocity profiles revealed that spanwise large-scale vortices were generated in the downstream of the slot and persist further downstream. The highest reduction in skin friction was achieved at highest forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088) and a forcing angle of $\alpha$=120$^{\circ}$. The spatial fraction of the vortices was examined to analyze the skin friction reduction.
The effects of surface roughness on a spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) were investigated by performing direct numerical simulations of TBLs over rough and smooth walls. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was varied in the range $Re_{\theta}=300{\sim}1400$. The roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the roughness height was $k=1.5{\theta}_{in}$, which corresponds to $k/{\delta}=0.045{\sim}0.125$. To avoid generating a rough wall inflow, which is prohibitively difficult, a step change from smooth to rough was placed $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. The spatially-developing characteristics of the rough-wall TBL were examined. Along the streamwise direction, the friction velocity approached a constant value and a self-preserving form of the turbulent stress was obtained. Introduction of the roughness elements affected the turbulent stress not only in the roughness sublayer but also in the outer layer. Despite the roughness-induced increase of the turbulent stress in the outer layer, the roughness had only a relatively small effect on the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor in the outer layer. Inspection of the triple products of the velocity fluctuations revealed that introducing the roughness elements onto the smooth wall had a marked effect on vertical turbulent transport across the whole TBL. By contrast, good surface similarity in the outer layer was obtained for the third-order moments of the velocity fluctuations.

Direct numerical simulations were performed to analyze the effects of time-periodical blowing through a spanwise slot on a turbulent boundary layer. The blowing velocity was varied in a cyclic manner from 0 to 2A$^{+}$(A$^{+}$ =0.25, 0.50 and 1.00) at a fixed blowing frequency of f$^{+}$=0.017. The effect of steady blowing (SB) was also examined, and the SB results were compared with those for periodic blowing (PB). PB reduced the skin friction near the slot, although to a slightly lesser extent than SB. PB was found to generate a spanwise vortical structure in the downstream of the slot. This vortex generates a reverse flow near the wall, thereby reducing the wall shear stress. The wall-normal and spanwise turbulence intensities under PB are increased as compared to those under SB, whereas the streamwise turbulent intensity under PB is weaker than that under SB. PB enhances more energy redistribution than SB. The periodic response of the streamwise turbulence intensity to PB is propagated to a lesser extent than that of the other components of the turbulence intensities and the Reynolds shear stress.

A direct numerical simulation is performed to analyze the effects of a localized time-periodic blowing on a turbulent boundary layer flow at R $e_{+}$=300. Main emphasis is placed on the blowing frequency effect on near-wall turbulent flow structures at downstream. Wall-normal velocity on a spanwise slot is varied periodically at different frequencies (0.004$\leq$$f^{+}$$\leq$0.080). The amplitude of periodic blowing is $A^{+}$=0.5 in wall nit, which corresponds to the value of $v_{rms}$ at $y^{+}$=15 without blowing. The frequency responses are scrutinized by examining the phase or time-averaged turbulent statistics. The optimal frequency ( $f^{+}$=0.03) is observed, where maximum increase in Reynolds shear stress, streamwise vorticity fluctuations and energy redistribution occurs. The phase-averaged stretching and tilting term are investigated to analyze the increase of streamwise vorticity fluctuations which are closely related to turbulent coherent structures. It is found that the difference between PB and SB at a high blowing frequencies is negligible.e.e.

Turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate was disturbed by installing an elliptic cylinder with an axis ratio of AR=2. For comparison, the same experiment was carried out for a circular cylinder having the same vertical height. The surface pressure and the heat transfer coefficient on the flat plate were measured with varying the gap distance between the elliptic cylinder and the flat plate. The mean velocity and the turbulent intensity profile of the streamwise velocity component were measured using a hot-wire anemometry. As a result, the flow structure and the local heat transfer rate were modified by the interaction between the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer as a function of the critical gap ratio where the regular vortices start to shed. For the elliptic cylinder, the critical gap ratio is increased and the surface pressure on the flat plate is recovered rapidly at downstream location, compared with the equivalent circular cylinder. The maximum heat transfer rate occurs at the gap ratio of G/B = 0.5, where the flow interaction between the lower shear layer of the cylinder wake and the turbulent boundary layer is strong.

The wall pressure fluctuations of a turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate have been investigated in an anechoic wind tunnel facility. The anechoic wind tunnel consists of acoustically-lined duct, muffler, and splitter-type silencer for noise suppression and vanes for reducing head losses involved. To improve spectra characteristics in high frequency range, a 1/8" pressure-type microphone sensor, which has a pin-holed cap of various diameters, was employed in this experiment. It was shown that the pin-holed microphone sensor with a dimensionless diameter $d^+$ of 7.1 resolved the high frequency pressure fluctuations most effectively among ones with various pin-hole diameters. The measured wall pressure spectra in terms of three types of scaling parameters were in good agreement with other experimental and numerical results. The pressure events of high amplitude were found to contribute to total fluctuating pressure energies in the turbulent boundary layer significantly and supposed to radiate to the far-field effectively.

Computational work using the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations is carried out to predict the discharge coefficient of mass flow through a micro-critical nozzle. Several kinds of turbulence models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. The computed results are compared with the previous experimented ones. The present computations predict the experimental discharge coefficients with a reasonable accuracy. It is found that the standard $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$turbulence model with the standard wall function gives a best prediction of the discharge coefficients. The displacement thickness of the nozzle wall boundary layer is evaluated at the nozzle throat and is well compared to a prediction obtained by an empirical equation. The resulting displacement thickness of the wall boundary layer is about 2% to 0.6% of the diameter of the nozzle throat for the Reynolds numbers of 2000 to 20000.

Experimental study on the three-dimensional topology of hairpin packet structures in turbulent boundary layers were carried out. Two different Reynolds number based on momentum thickness, Re$\sub$$\theta$/=514 and 934 were generated in a blowing type wind tunnel under the condition of zero pressure gradient. Simultaneous measurements of velocity fields at a wall-normal plane and wall-parallel plane by a plane PIV and a Stereo-PIV systems. The two Nd:Yag laser systems and three CCD cameras were synchronized to obtain instantaneous velocity fields at the same time. To avoid optical noise at the crossing line by the two laser light sheets, a new optical arrangement using polarization was applied. The obtained velocity fields show the existence of hairpin packet structure vividly and the idealized hairpin vortex signature is confirmed by experiment. Two counter-rotating vortex pair which reflects the cutting plane of hairpin legs are found both side of a strong streaky structure when the wall-normal plane cuts the hairpin head.
Numerical simulation was carried out for a propane fire of mass transfer rate 3g/m^2-s$ on a 1m high vertical wall. The objectives of this study are to confirm the outcomes of evaluation of the simulator through simulation of natural convection, and to compare the results of the wall fire with those of previous studies. It was confirmed that the simulated boundary layer was laminar at C_s=0.2$ while it was turbulent at C_s=0.1$. The z direction velocity showed lack of turbulent mixing as seen in the natural convection case, and the profiles of temperature and velocities were in relatively good agreement with those of experiment and previous simulation. It was found that the air entrainment into the boundary layer was well predicted.
