  • Spiral reinforcement in a circular column plays an effective role in the ductile behavior of a column through position fixing and buckling restraining of the longitudinal reinforcement, and confining core-concrete. Each country has suggested the minimum volumetric ratio of spiral reinforcement in order to secure the ductility of concrete columns. The minimum volumetric ratio of spiral reinforcement suggested by ACI 318-14 and the national concrete structure design standard was developed based on the theory of Richard et al. (1928); furthermore it has been used until now. However, their theory cannot consider the effects of high strength concrete and high strength reinforcement, and arrangement condition of the spiral reinforcement. In this study, a modified minimum volumetric ratio equation is suggested, which is required to improve the ductility of reinforced concrete circular columns and to recover their stress. The modified minimum volumetric ratio equation suggested here considers the effect of the compressive strength of concrete, the yield strength of spiral reinforcement, the cross sectional area of columns, the pitch of spiral reinforcements and the diameter of spiral reinforcement. In this paper, the validity of the minimum volumetric ratios from ACI 318-14 and this study was investigated and compared based on the results of uniaxial compression experiment for specimens in which the material strength and the spiral reinforcements ratio were used as variables. In the end of the study, the modification method for the suggested equation was examined.

  • This paper estimated the structural behavior of recycled aggregate concrete confined with spiral reinforcement. The main test parameter was designed to be the type of aggregates and the steel ratio of spirals. A total of 18 specimens were cast and tested in this study. All the specimens had a diameter of 150mm and a height of 300mm. The specimens can be divided into two groups, based on the type of coarse aggregate used. The ratio of spiral reinforcement was varied from 0 % to 1.75%. To measure the axial and lateral deformations of the specimens, a total of six linear variation displacement transducers (LVDTs) were installed at each specimen. Furthermore strain gauges were also attached to the steel spirals to obtain the strain of spiral reinforcements. From the experimental results, the structural performance of recycled aggregate concrete specimens confined by steel spirals was similar to that of natural aggregate concrete specimens regardless of the ratio of spiral reinforcement.

  • This study estimates the performance of steel spirals according to the compressive strength of the concrete. A total of 24 confined concrete cylinders ($150{\times}300mm$) were cast and tested under monotonic concentric compression. The main test parameters were the yield strength of spiral reinforcements and the compressive strength of the concrete. To effectively evaluate the confinement effect according to the yield strength of steel spirals, the external diameter of steel spirals was designed to be same as the diameter of specimen. The experimental results indicated that the performance of confinement of steel spirals increased as the yield strength of spiral reinforcement increased and the compressive strength of the concrete decreased. Furthermore, existing analytical models were used for predicting the stress versus axial strain relationships of specimens tested in this study. It can be concluded that the accuracy of the analytical models deteriorated as the yield strength of steel spirals and the compressive strength of the concrete increased.

  • Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns(4.5 aspect ratio) were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable are transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratio of spirals of all the columns is 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The final objectives of this study are to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, steel fracture, etc. In this paper, describes mainly failure behavior, strength degradation behaviour, displacement ductility of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variables.

  • Recently, as the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increases, research is needed to increase the ductility of the columns in order to prevent the collapse of structures. In this study, to evaluate the performance of columns reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars, the FE model for the dynamic analysis of structures reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars for circular and rectangular columns is to be verified using the results of uniaxial compression experiments in the previous study. As a result, the experimental value of the column reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcement and the result value related to the dynamic analysis showed similar behavior, and the reliability was high. As a result of the analysis, the usability of the rectangular column reinforced with continuous lateral reinforcing bars was confirmed because the dissipated energy performance of the columns reinforced with spiral reinforcing bars was higher than that of the columns reinforced with band reinforcing bars.

  • Abutment-to-pile connection in an integral abutment bridge is vulnerable to lateral displacement induced by thermal movement of the superstructure. However, previous researches have merely focused on the connection. In order to improve the performance of the connection, new abutment-to-pile connection designs were proposed based on quasi-static nonlinear finite element model. The reinforcement detail specified in PennDOT DM4 and HSS tube were barely effective in controlling crack growing but spiral rebar effectively performed to delay crack growth as well as absorbing energy capacity. However, it was found that delaying cracking and strengthening the connection also caused the high lateral load in superstructures. Consequently, shape of HP pile were modified to introduce plastic hinge of the HP pile for reducing the lateral load in superstructures. Connections with modified HP pile significantly prevented crack propagations under the lateral displacement.

  • This study estimates the performance of confined concrete according to the configuration of transverse steel bars. The main test variables were the yield strength of spiral reinforcement and configuration of transverse reinforcement. A total of 27 specimens with rectangular cross section were cast and tested under monotonic concentric compression. R-type specimens with rectangular spirals, C-type specimens with circular spirals and O-type specimens with combined shape of rectangular and octagon were designed in this study. From experimental results, it is concluded that the proposed configuration of transverse reinforcement can provided improved ductility to the confined concrete compared to rectangular spiral reinforcement.

  • Two octagonal RC bridge columns of small scale model were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. One in two specimens was solid cross section, the other was hollow cross section. The volumetric ratio of transverse spiral hoop of all specimens is 0.00206. The columns showed flexure-shear failure. Failure behavior and seismic performance were investigated. The test results showed that the structural performance of the hollow specimen such as initial crack pattern, initial stiffness, and energy dissipation performance was comparable to that of the solid specimen, but the lateral strength, ultimate displacement, energy dissipation performance of hollow specimen noticeably decreased after drift ratio of 3%.
