  • Three species of Noctuidae, Eupsilia boursini Sugi, Valeria tricristata Draudt and Othosia satoi Sugi are reported for the first time from Korea. Diagnosis for the species, photographs of adults, and illustrations of the male or female genitalia, are provided.

He II RAMAN SCATTERED LINE BY NEUTRAL HYDROGEN IN THE BIPOLAR PLANETARY NEBULA M2-9 (나비형 행성상 성운 M2-9에서 He II의 중성 수소에 의한 라만 산란선)

  • In the spectrum of the young bipolar planetary nebula M2-9 obtained from the 1.5m telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, we detected the He II feature at 6545 $\AA$ that are proposed to be formed via Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen. However, in the same spectrum, the He II emission lines at 6527 $\AA$ and 6560 $\AA$ are absent, which implies that the He II emission region is hidden from our line of sight and that the H I scattering region is pretty much extended not to be obscured entirely. We performed photoionization computations to estimate the physical size of the He II emission line region to be $10^{16}cm$, from which the location and dimension of the obscuring circumstellar region are inferred and the temperature of the central star must exceed $10^5K$. The angular size of the circumstellar region responsible for the obscuration of the He II emission region is ~1" with the assumption of the distance 01 kpc to M2-9, which is consistent with the recent image of M2-9 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope.

  • An electron microscopical study on hemocytes of last instar larvae of Orthoptera (Acrida cinerea Thunberg, Paratenodera sinensis De Saussure, Atractomorpha lata Hotschulsk was performed to observe cell types, structures and their origins. Prohemocytes are the smallest round cells with large, nucleus, poorly developed cytoplasmic organelles and lower composition ratio, accouting for less than 1% of all cell types. Little remarked differences were revealed among different species. Plasmatocytes are relatively large cells with higher composition ratio, accounting for 5 to 20%. The majority of the plasmatocytes are oval forms with numerous external cytophismic projections., relatively well developed cytoplasmic organelles. Granular cells are characterized by various granules in cytoplasm. Some considerable remarked differences were revealed among different species. Furthermore the granules themselves differ in fine structures. Adipohemocytes were found only in Acrida cinerea Thunberg.

Changes of Insect Diversity after Construction of the Insect Garden (곤충생태원 조성 후 곤충상 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of insects diversity and host plants from 1998 to 2001 after the construction of an insect park in Suwon in Korea. After the construction in 1997 the insect species and populations have been increased yearly to date. A total of 343 species out of 138 families of 11 orders was surveyed at the park from April to November in 2001. The number of species increased from April to July and showed a peak in June. Coleoptera was a dominant order, and Dolichus halensis (Schaller) of Coleoptera, Artogeia rapae (Linne) of Lepidoptera, and Liorhyssus hyaalinus (Fabricius) of Hemiptera were dominant species.

  • Proton lineshapes and chemical shifts of paramagnetic solutions of Ln$(NO_3)_3$ in DMF have been measured over the temperature range 240K to 3807K. Solvation sphere exchange rates and the thermodynamic exchange parameters for CHO group of the DMF molecules have been extracted from these data. The results were established through a detailed analysis and discussion of the temperature depending data of the 1/$T_2$ and ${\Dellta}{\omega}$ data were analyzed in detail, and it has been found that delocalization of the unpaired electron spin from some $Ln^{3+}$ ion to DMF molecules beyond the first solvation shell would occur, giving rise to a scalar relaxation contribution in the bulk solvent.

  • The vascular plants in Manbokdae-Yeowonjae section of the Baekdudaegan were consisted of 502 taxa; 104 families,305 genus,439 species, 60 varieties, 3 forma. From the floristic point of view, the Baekdudaegan of Manbokdae-Yeowonjae section belongs to the southern province in Korea. The rare and endangered plants designated by Korea Forest Service were Abies koreana, Pedicularis verticillata, Patrinia saniculaefolia, Hololeion maximowiczii, Lilium callolsum, Paeonia obovate, Tricyrtis dizutata and VioEa diamantica, and Cymbidium goeringii. The Korean endemic species were Abies koreana, Patrinia saniculaefolia, Vicia unijuga, Stewartia koreana, Cornus walteri, Weigela subsessilis, Saussurea seoulensis, Tyicyrtis dilatata, Hosta capitata, Clematis trichotoma et at.

  • Based on our insect collecting trip to the Is. Jin-do, Jeollanam-do Province from June 29 to July 1, 2005, a total of 573 lepidopterous species belonging to 37 families are reported, with adding 122 species new to the locality During our survey, the most dominant species was Cryptolechia malacobyrsa Meyrick (Oecophoridae), followed by Sandrabatis crassiella Ragonot (Pyralidae) and Yponomeuta tokyonellus Matsumura(Yponomeutidae), and the family Noctuidae (165 spp.) was the most diverse taxon in species number. We here also discuss the species representing the climatic feature in the island and compare the species diversity with those of other two major islands in Korea, Is. Geoje-do and Is. Jeju-do. Among the species recognized in this study, two species, Epilepia dentata (Matsumura and Shibata) and Meganola costalis (Staudinger) are recorded in Korea for the first time, in spite of the presence of previous notes on the species which is invalid. The adults and genitalia of the two species are illustrated and described briefly.

  • A cosmopterigid species, Alloclita mongolica Sinev is reported for the first time from Korea. This is the first record of the genus Alloclita Staudinger for the Korean fauna and the southernmost records of A. mongolica. The collecting data of the species in Korea suggest a habitat association of A. mongolica with coastal sand-dunes. The features of external appearance and male genitalia are described and illustrated for this rare species.

A Faunistic Study of Insects and Arenaceous Insects variation by Oil Spill Accidents of Taeanhaean National Park (태안해안국립공원 곤충상 및 유류오염 사고에 따른 사질성 곤충상 변동에 관한 연구)

  • The study of insect fauna in Taeanhaean National Park in Korea began with the first survey of natural resources in 1996, and then the surveys were conducted seasonally from 2005 to 2014. The surveyed sites were mostly coastal areas, sand dunes, and back grasslands. Insects were collected by sweeping with insect net, suction, pitfall trap, light trap, and Malaise trap. As a result, a total of 1,540 species of 215 families belonging to 17 orders were identified. Lepidoptera was the most populous group at 34.2% and followed by Coleoptera at 28.3%, Hemiptera at 12.7%, Diptera at 8.5%, Hymenoptera at 7.1%, Orthoptera at 4.7%, Odonata at 2.0%, and others. The analysis of change of arenaceous insect fauna before and after the accident by the Hebei Spirit that spilt oil in Taean in December 2007 showed that 45 arenaceous insect species, mostly belonging to Coleoptera, were observed through the whole survey period. The impact of oil spill on the number of arenaceous insect species appearing in the area was minor.

Changes in insect diversity and composition after construction of an onshore wind farm (육상풍력발전단지 조성에 따른 곤충군집 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to identify changes of insect compositions and diversity after construction of an onshore wind farm. We investigated insect fauna and compositions between a grassland deforested by the construction and a forest located at Yeongdeok and Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. Insects were collected using a sweeping net and light trap. A total of 11 orders, 50 families, and 246 species, and 1,076 individuals were collected at study sites. By taxonomic group, Lepidoptera species were the most frequently found with 141 species, 417 individuals (38.8%), followed by Hymenoptera (20.6%), Hemiptera (16.2%), and Orthoptera (12.3%). There were also significant differences in insect species and community compositions between sites. Creating open-field deforested forests are beneficial for some insect groups such as Hymenoptera and Orthoptera. Our results suggest that deforesting by the construction of an onshore wind farm might affect the composition and diversity of insects. Results of this study provide basic data for research on onshore wind farms.
